He stayed there until his retirement as maintenance service manager in 1991. Peter approached the brochure project in the same way that he approached work - with dedication and enthusiasm. , SCIENCE & 1 - TECHNOLOGY 0 IN SOCIETY ~ • • • ABOUT SATIS Science and Technology in Society units are designed to be used in conjunction with conventional science courses, particularly those leading to GCSE examinations. Each unit has links to major science topics as well as exploring important social and technological applications and issues. The units are self-contained and generally require about 2 periods (around 75 minutes) of classroom time. Each unit comprises Teachers' Notes (blue sheets) and Students' materials (white sheets). Full guidance on use is given in the Teachers' Notes accompanying each unit, which also include background information and suggest further resources. Each SATIS book contains ten units. The units are numbered in a system giving the number of the book followed by the number of the unit within that book. Thus the first unit in the first SATIS book is numbered 10l. In addition to the SATIS books, a general Teacher's Guide to the project is available, giving guidance on some of the teaching techniques involved as well as ideas for further activities. Many people from schools, universities,. industry and the professions have contributed to the writing, development and trials of the SATIS project. PROPOSED RESPONSE TO THE NORTH WEST COAST CONNECTIONS ROUTE CORRIDOR CONSULTATION – APPENDIX 1 PURPOSE OF APPENDIX The purpose of this Appendix is to set out the proposed response of SLDC to the National Grid North West Coast Connections Route Corridor Consultation 1 General comments 1.1 SLDC broadly supports the preferred option – Onshore South with Tunnel. 1.2 The preferred option includes a tunnel under Morecambe Bay from close to Heysham to the Rampside area and then broadly follows the existing 132kV Electricity North West power line northwards through the Furness peninsula to Broughton in Furness and then up the West Coast of Cumbria, much of which will be removed and replaced by a smaller number of larger 400kV pylons. 1.3 The preferred option, in the main, avoids the significant impacts to South Lakeland communities that would be incurred if other alternative options, such as Onshore South, were implemented. 1.4 However, SLDC’s support for the preferred option is subject to consideration of the remaining concerns and needs for mitigation detailed below. 2 Section H1 (South eastern Furness) 2.1 The preferred tunnel route is proposed to surface slightly inland in the area between Roosebeck and Rampside. SLDC considers that locating the convertor stations at the points where the cable surfaces as close to the existing energy infrastructure at Roosecote Power Station as possible (as indicated by the larger blue hatched polygon in the consultation material) would indeed be preferable. It would have the least impact on social, environmental and economic factors, including landscape, impacts on local communities and tourism. -

TEXT OF PETITION Nick Dekker calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to investigate the circumstances whereby it agreed that 60 hydro-power stations could be accredited for subsidy under the Renewables Obligation scheme and that generation capacity could be cut to below the 20megawatt qualification threshold at others to enable accreditation and whether, in the interests of electricity consumers, it will rescind these accreditations. 3. ACTION TAKEN TO RESOLVE ISSUES OF CONCERN BEFORE SUBMITTING THE PETITION I have contacted and have been in correspondence with AuditScotland, OFGEM, Scottish & Southern Energy PLC and ScottishPower PLC. The past year has seen a number of significant developments in this area, not least the growing involvement of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), whose impact was only just starting to be felt a year ago. Work has now started on 20 of the 51 industrial topics identified within the Monuments’ Protection Programme. Work on lead and coal is complete, and we are putting forward proposals for future management of 300 sites including 200 schedulings. Work is almost complete on the alum, brass and gunpowder industries, and is well-advanced on a further seven. At the time of writing (mid-September) we were still awaiting decisions by the Secretary of State for National Heritage on the 32 new listings and four upgradings recommended in September 1995 as a result of the thematic survey of Manchester mills. This was the first thematic survey to be the subject of public consultation; it is therefore disappointing that, as a result of the delay in reaching a decision, five of the candidates for listing have already been damaged or lost through demolition.
