11 Goodness quotient Man'sgoodnesscanbedefinedsimplyashis concernforothers.Goodnessquotientcanbe definedasratioofhisconcernforotherstohis totalconcerns.Goodnessisrelative.Apersonis consideredgoodifhisgoodnessishigherthan thatofanaveragepersoninthesociety. Therewerealsostrayanimalsonthestreet witnessingthescene.Perhapstheywere wonderingwhathashappenedtoman?

13 Anger Wegetangrywheneverwefindsomebody actingagainstourowninterestandweare unabletorestrainhim.Maybethatalthough thatpersonsactionsareagainstourinterest,they areperfectlyservinghisowninterests. Ihavemyselfgonethroughsuchsituations severaltimes.InthesesituationsalthoughI continuetorestrainotherpersontobestofmy abilities,whatcontrolsmyangerismybeliefthat atthecoreeverybodyisselfishincludingmyself. 14 Arrogance Arroganceresultsfromtwothings.First fromcapabilityofsuccessfullymanagingone's occupation.Secondlyfromtakingfullcreditfor thesuccess. Ofcourseindividualcompetenceis necessaryforsuccessbutdoesitaccountfor everything?Ifwethinkso,perhapsweare underestimatingcontributionofsocietyandour luckfactorforwhatweare. Man is a social animal. Without society he is nothing but animal. Yet many behave as if they are self made.

15 Purpose of life Purposeoflifeistolivepurposefullife. Butwhatispurposefullife?Forthosewhoare religious,religiouslifeispurposefullife.For thosewhobelieveinuniversalreligionand universalGod,spirituallifeispurposefullife. AccordingtoChristianity,thisworldis temporary.Allpains,pleasuresandworldly purposeinthisworldaretemporary.Thisworld isgoingtoendandthereafterGodwillcreatea newworld,whichwillbepermanent.Allthose livingwilldie.ThoselivingforChristwillfind placeinthenewworldandwillliveforever. Thusforthempurposeoflifeistofindplacein newpermanentworld. AccordingtoHinduismoneofthefour purposesoflifeis Moksha, i.e.freedomfrom cycleoflifeanddeathitself. 16 Accordingtosomethinkersthisworldis anillusion.Forthemisnothingand nothingisreality.Alongwiththeworld,thelife, and‘purposeoflife’areillusory.Whentheygo throughpersonaltragedies,sometimeseven hardcoreillusionist’smindmaybetakenoverby emotionsandillusoryworldmayappeartobe toorealtobeunreal. Purposeoflifemayalsokeeponchanging aswemoveoninlife.Forsomeitchangesfrom worldlytooutworldly,forothersitmayremain worldlythroughoutthelife.Thosewhoare neitherawareofanyoutworldlypurposenor haveanysignificantworldlypurposelefttobe achieved,lifebecomespurposeless. Somepeoplefinditdifficulttoadmitthat lifecouldalsobepurposeless.Accordingto them,sinceGodhascreatedlife,itcan’tbe purposeless,especiallyifitishumanlife. 17 Therearemillionsandmillionswhoare notabletomanagebasicnecessitiesoflifesuch asfoodandshelter.Cantheythinkofany purposeinlife?Forthemistherepurposein livingorlivingistheonlypurpose?Istheneed forpurposeisahigherneedafterbasicneeds havebeenmetwith? Whataretheoptionsiftoyouyourlife seemstobepurposeless?Ifyoufindyourlife purposeless,mostprobablyyouareeitheratheist oragnostic.Inthatcasetoyouthelifeofevery bodyelsealsomayalsoseemtobepurposeless. 23 My philosophy of life Atheoryisconsideredscientificallycorrectif reallifeobservationswhenviewedthroughthat theory,validatethetheoryratherthanleaving believersoftheoryconfusedandsurprised.Same istruewiththephilosophy. Ibelievethatmostofwhatwegetinlifeisa matterofchance.SoIdon'tgetsurprisedby evenandoddsinmyandeverybodyelse'slife. Idonotdenyfreewill,buthowmuchfreeis 'freewill'?Foranaverageperson,ifyou comparethingswithinhiscontroltothethings whicharebeyondcontrol,youmayfindthat thingsbeyondcontrolconsiderablyoutweigh thingswithincontrol.Youhavelittlecontrolon 24 thesocietyandfamilyinwhichyouareborn.No doubtthereareexamplesof'ragstoriches'and viceversa,butthesearemoreofexceptions thanrule.
