Emergency Situation Report ESR (1) 27 January 2012 Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA), WHO Indonesia Tornado, Thousand Islands, DKI Jakarta Province, Republic of Indonesia HIGHLIGHTS On 25 January 2012 at 12:00 PM a 30-minutes strong tornado hit four islands in the Thousand Islands: Kelapa, Kelapa Dua, Pramuka and Harapan Islands, DKI Jakarta province. Two meter height tidal wave was also reported in the Thousand Islands Sea. Although needs assessments are ongoing, preliminary reports indicated that 468 houses were severely damaged and 2,300 people were affected. The number of casualties and damages reported by Center for Health Crisis MOH are 34 people with major injury and 450 damaged houses. In addition to the data from MOH, BNPB reported 459 damaged houses, 4 damaged schools, 1 police office, 1 damaged mosque, 3 damaged buildings and 1 damaged puskesmas. National Agency for Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics/BMKG reported tropical storm Iggy affects strong wind with more than 36 km/hour speed and 4-6 meter tidal wave in Indonesian sea. The rapid response team from BPBD Jakarta and Social Office have not distributed the relief assistance due to logistic constraints. Thousand Islands District Health Office has established health post and provided medical service to the victims. Thousand Islands District Health Office, Jakarta Provincial Health Office, and Center for Health Crisis MOH are monitoring the situation closely. WHO is in close contact with MOH in monitoring the situation through Center for Health Crisis MOH. In case the situation warrant, WHO will provide any assistance needed. The tornado also caused damage in 2 schools, 1 mosque, and 1 police station. 2) Harapan Island: 231 houses damaged (25 severe damage, 64 medium damage and 142 light damage) with approximately 1,155 (out of 1,677 inhabitants) people affected. In addition, 2 schools, 1 mosque, 1 community health centre, and 20 electricity poles were damaged as well. Bali Bali 3 Emergency Situation Report ESR (1) 27 January 2012 Communication, Transportation and Electricity Power Communication was not disrupted. Electricity powers was disrupted Sea transportation was disrupted as the impact of the 2-meter tidal wave. Response Local Government The rapid response team from BPBD Jakarta and Social Office did not distribute the relief assistance due to logistic constraints (the weather situation in the area did not allow them to reach the Islands). The team is on standby in Marina port. Once weather conditions improve, they will start distribution of food and non-food relief items. Thousand islands district health office established health post and provided medical service to the victims. Ministry of Social Affairs Ministry of Social Affair will deploy 20 volunteers and these following items on 26 January 2012 by using two ships subject to the sea transportation availability: 1. 3 tons of rice 2. 100 boxes of instant noodle 3. 50 cans of fish 4. 50 boxes of frying oil 5. 100 pcs of blanket 6. 50 pcs of mat MOH – WHO Indonesia Jakarta Provincial Health Office, Thousand islands District Health office and Center for Health Crisis MOH are monitoring the situation closely. WHO is in close contact with MOH in monitoring the situation through Health Crisis Center MOH. In case the situation warrant, WHO will provide any assistance needed. Status of International Aid Status of International Aid So far the government has not officially requested any international aid.
