Find harmony in the beautiful sites and exquisite landscapes of Java and Bali. Dive right into the soul of the country on the island of Java, exploring ’s creative and traditional culture. Visit Indonesia’s most important archaeological sites; the 10th century and the colossal Buddhist monument of , both UNESCO Heritage Sites. Hop the train for a ride across the bucolic landscape of and spend time in two smaller towns to enjoy a cooking class, a bicycle excursion, and community explorations. The natural environment is as stunning as the architecture and one of the highlights of your trip is sure to be your experience of , Java’s highest peak set in a lunar landscape of epic proportions.

The cultural landscape of Bali, where we spend the second part of our trip, is another UNESCO World Heritage site; the verdant rice terraces speak of an entire way of life. Explore ’s traditional culture in temples, art, and dance, and marvel at the views by the sea at Canggu Beach.

You’ll be staying in small boutique hotels; we have selected three hotels of the Tugu group for stays in , , and Bali. These hotels are owned by one of Indonesia’s biggest collectors of fine art and cultural antiquities; we will see stunning collections on display at each hotel. STUDY LEADER Paula Swart is a museum curator and expert on Asian culture and history. Paula has degrees in Sinology, Asian art history, Chinese history, and archaeology and has published several books and numerous articles on the art and architecture of Asian cultures. Paula has been introducing travellers to this part of the world, its history and culture, for more than 20 years.

Joining Instructions This tour begins with our welcome dinner at 7PM on October 1st. Please ensure that you arrive in Yogyakarta by this time to join the group. All travellers arriving on the start date of the tour will be met on arrival and transferred to the group hotel. This transfer is included in the cost of the tour. When you book the designated pre-trip accommodation with Worldwide Quest, your transfer from the airport to our group hotel on arrival is included. If you are making your own pre-trip arrangements, this transfer can be provided at additional cost. The tour concludes with a single complimentary transfer from the hotel to the Denpasar Airport on the last day of the tour. Level of Activity: Moderate A good level of fitness is important for this trip. You must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and irregular paving and climbing stairs. You should be comfortable walking for up to three hours at a stretch, unassisted. We will be doing a fair amount of walking in town centres.

Accommodation The Phoenix Hotel in the heart of Yogyakarta is a fusion of Asian and European décor with an inviting swimming pool and spa. The Tugu Hotel in Blitar is a beautiful East Javanese mansion dating from the 1850s, carefully renovated to preserve its artistic and historic character, blended with modern touches. The Tugu Hotel in Malang is located in the city centre and houses a vast, priceless collection of antiques amassed by the hotel’s founder. Kamoneka at Monkey Forest is perfectly located close to the Ubud Market and all the cultural activities of the Ubud Palace. The Tugu Hotel in Bali is set in a tranquil coastal enclave in stylish surf outpost Canggu Beach with thatched roof suites dotted in the lush gardens. All hotels have swimming pools and spas.
