According to Chief of Naval Personnel statistics, 19-percent of the Navy’s enlisted force identifies as either African-American or Black, to include 17-percent of all senior and master chiefs, while seven-percent of the officer force and four percent of all admirals identify. Below are samples of the most significant firsts accomplished by African-American or Black Sailors throughout the Navy’s history.
