ACE’s Scandinavian Sojourn : A Southerner’s Perspective Story by: Richard Bostic, assisted by Ronny Cook When I went on the ACEspana trip back in 2009, it was by far one of the most amazing vacations I have ever experienced. In addition to getting to visit parks in a different culture than we see here, it is also a great opportunity to spend time with fellow enthusiasts and grow friendships while enjoying our common interests. When Scandinavia Sojourn was announced for the summer of 2011, I knew it was a trip I could not miss. Since the 2009 trip was my first trip to Europe I thought that there was no way the over- all experience could be better in Scandinavia. I was wrong. We landed in Helsinki, Finland around 1300 the day before we were required to be at the hotel to meet with the group. Helsinki is an interesting city and fairly new compared to many cities in Europe. Walking around the city you can see the Russian influence in the city’s architecture. In fact, many movies during the cold war would use Helsinki to shoot scenes that are supposed to be set in the Soviet Union. After making our way to the Crowne Plaza Hotel and getting a quick lunch at the hotel restaurant we decided to spend the remaining time that afternoon checking out some of the sites around our hotel. Some of these sites included the Temppeliaukio Church inside of a rock formation, the train station, Routatientori Square and National Theater, and a couple of the city’s art museums. -

THE IMMERSIVE THEME PARK Analyzing the Immersive World of the Magic Kingdom Theme Park JOOST TER BEEK (S4155491) MASTERTHESIS CREATIVE INDUSTRIES Radboud University Nijmegen Supervisor: C.C.J. van Eecke 22 July 2018 Summary The aim of this graduation thesis The Immersive Theme Park: Analyzing the Immersive World of the Magic Kingdom Theme Park is to try and understand how the Magic Kingdom theme park works in an immersive sense, using theories and concepts by Lukas (2013) on the immersive world and Ndalianis (2004) on neo-baroque aesthetics as its theoretical framework. While theme parks are a growing sector in the creative industries landscape (as attendance numbers seem to be growing and growing (TEA, 2016)), research on these parks seems to stay underdeveloped in contrast to the somewhat more accepted forms of art, and almost no attention was given to them during the writer’s Master’s courses, making it seem an interesting choice to delve deeper into this subject. Trying to reveal some of the core reasons of why the Disney theme parks are the most visited theme parks in the world, and especially, what makes them so immersive, a profound analysis of the structure, strategies, and design of the Magic Kingdom theme park using concepts associated with the neo-baroque, the immersive world and the theme park is presented through this thesis, written from the perspective of a creative master student who has visited these theme parks frequently over the past few years, using further literature, research, and critical thinking on the subject by others to underly his arguments. -

Whilst their numbers have decreased, classic rides from the 1930s to the 70s, such as the Ghost Train and Haunted House experiences have been referenced is films, games and novels of the digital era. Although the format is well known, it is not well defined. There are no dedicated publications on the topic and its links to other media discourses are sparsely documented. -

www.bookvica.com SPRING CATALOGUE 2018: Early Soviet Culture. A Selection of Books 1 F O R E W O R D Dear friends and collegues, Bookvica team is happy to present to you the spring catalogue of 2018! Our focus is once again on the life of the USSR in 1920s-1930s when new ideas have found its embodiment in the life of the Soviet man. Most of the books we have gathered for this catalogue are not one the classic checklist of early Soviet books. No works by Mayakovsky or Lissitzky are present and some of them are practically unknown and barely recorded. However this collection is not accidental but the one with a purpose. With some exceptions we tried to look into the lesser researched sides of the life of new Soviet man and the propaganda that was creating her/him. What toys were they playing growing up and what notebooks used to write their lessons in? What shoes did they wear and what parks they attended back in the days? What did they do in a free time? How the factory libraries looked like and what could be written in the factory newspapers? The answers could be found in the books featured in our catalogue this time. As usual we tried to include books that would have the harmonious balance of rarity, interesting content and the design. That’s why you should expect to find the constructivist wrapper on the catalogue of the library equipment or photomontage cover of the second grade notebook. Apart from the experimental sections we did include our standard selection on architecture, art theory (this time focusing on color theory) and science books as well as handmade children’s books on their life in pioneer summer camps. -

Ride-Related Fatalities 1. Numbers and Causes of Fatalities According to the most recent report of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), between 1987 and 2000 there were 51 amusement park ride fatalities in the United States. This is a very, very small number. As discussed below, many common activities are more likely to cause fatalities. The total of 51 fatalities itself is misleading as an indication of ride safety. Of these 51 fatalities, about one-third were due to rider error and another 10 percent were due to pre-existing medical conditions of the riders. In order to understand the data, the 51 fatalities are individually listed below. There are links to the press articles describing the accidents. This paper assigns causes to the fatalities as falling into one or more of eight categories. Roller coasters are iconic structures that provide safe thrills for riders. Safety is achieved using multiple safety mechanisms: for example, bogies have multiple wheels that hold trains on track, a block system prevents trains from colliding and riders are held in place with safety restraints. Regular maintenance checks are also performed to prevent accidents caused by failed parts. Roller coasters are designed using a heartline spline and calculating accelerations in all possible scenarios to prevent rollbacks and too high values of accelerations, which could cause damage to riders’ bodies. A reach envelope is applied to the spline to prevent riders from hitting nearby objects. The speed and curvature of the track combined create acceler- ations that need to be countered with adequate track and support structures. A track cross- section usually consists of rails, cross-ties and a spine, while support structures can vary depending on height and loads. -

Press Release Düsseldorf, Germany, 30th January 2021 Winners of this year's FKF-Awards announced Members of the FKF e.V. voted on European novelties 2020 On Saturday, 30th January 2021, the winners of this year's FKF-Awards were announced. The announcement took place during the FKF Convention 2021 Online, a virtual alternative programme to the previously cancelled face-to-face event. Since 2003, the FKF-Award has been presented by the Freundeskreis Kirmes und Freizeitparks e.V. (FKF) and honours special European novelties of the previous year by amusement parks and showmen. The FKF-Award in the funfair category went to the Dutch showman Niek Moonen for the ride Toxic. The Speed Flip from Moser Rides travelled under a different showman until 2012 and had been in storage since then. The re-themed and very wild ride is guaranteed to create a great atmosphere at any fairground. The second FKF-Award goes to Erlebnispark Tripsdrill. The Suspended Family Coaster Hals-über-Kopf, built by Dutch manufacturer Vekoma, won in the roller coaster category. Four inversions and various crossings with the Family Boomerang Volldampf, which opened at the same time, ensure lots of fun for young and old visitors! Phantasialand won in the park category for its new steampunk themed world Rookburgh. The highlight of the highly immersive area is a Flying Coaster from the manufacturer Vekoma. The themed world also includes a hotel with a bar, a restaurant, a chocolate factory and a sandwich stall. The unique overall experience impressed the members of the association. Every year, the attractions worthy of an award are nominated by the over 1.300 association members themselves. -

Latto, and Robbie Berg National Hurricane Center 1 24 September 2021 VIIRS SATELLITE IMAGE OF HURRICANE IRMA WHEN IT WAS AT ITS PEAK INTENSITY AND MADE LANDFALL ON BARBUDA AT 0535 UTC 6 SEPTEMBER. Irma was a long-lived Cape Verde hurricane that reached category 5 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. The catastrophic hurricane made seven landfalls, four of which occurred as a category 5 hurricane across the northern Caribbean Islands. Irma made landfall as a category 4 hurricane in the Florida Keys and struck southwestern Florida at category 3 intensity. Irma caused widespread devastation across the affected areas and was one of the strongest and costliest hurricanes on record in the Atlantic basin. 1 Original report date 9 March 2018. Second version on 30 May 2018 updated casualty statistics for Florida, meteorological statistics for the Florida Keys, and corrected a typo. Third version on 30 June 2018 corrected the year of the last category 5 hurricane landfall in Cuba and corrected a typo in the Casualty and Damage Statistics section. This version corrects the maximum wind gust reported at St. Croix Airport (TISX). Hurricane Irma 2 Hurricane Irma 30 AUGUST–12 SEPTEMBER 2017 SYNOPTIC HISTORY Irma originated from a tropical wave that departed the west coast of Africa on 27 August. The wave was then producing a widespread area of deep convection, which became more concentrated near the northern portion of the wave axis on 28 and 29 August. -
