It is listed primarily for its unusual late 19th century front elevation of cast iron arcades with decorated spandrels. It is situated in the Hat & Feathers Conservation Area and is adjacent to the St Luke’s Conservation Area on the north-east fringes of Clerkenwell. The Site and Context
Section 01 The Site and Context 8 27 GOSWELL ROAD 9 THE LOCATION The building fronts directly onto Goswell Road, a Medieval street that runs from Angel in the north to the City of London to the south. The land was originally owned by the Charterhouse but was not developed until the late 19th Century where three warehouses, numbers 1-3 Charterhouse Buildings were constructed. These buildings were destroyed in 1885 in a fire that destroyed most of the surrounding buildings; the rebuilt buildings were subsequently destroyed by bombing in the mid 20th Century. The site lay vacant until the late 1960s when it was developed and became Litton House. This was subsequently demolished in the late 1980s and replaced by the current building on the site. The nearest London Underground Stations are Barbican and Old Street. The eastern ticket hall for Farringdon Crossrail station will be opening in late 2019, on Charterhouse Street. The height of the buildings in the immediate context vary from four to nine storeys with larger residential towers nearby. The site has the following boundaries: - A boundary to the south and to the rear is shared with the William Harvey Heart Centre - A boundary to the north is shared with no. 4 Charterhouse Buildings, Goswell Road - Nos. 14-15 Charterhouse Buildings borders at the rear Crescent House, a grade II listed building as part of the Golden Lane Estate, runs along Goswell Road directly opposite. The area has a mixture of uses with no one dominant type. Most of the east side of Goswell Road is residential in character, whereas most of the west is commercial. -

When the family’s head, the Marquess of Northampton, moved the family away from the area at the turn of the sixteenth century, the wider Clerkenwell area was still largely rural. The area where the Square would later be established was flanked by St John Street and Goswell Road, major routes from the north to London’s historic centre and the River Thames. Image: Northampton House, early 19th Century By the beginning of the eighteenth century, the area had become a centre of the meat trade given its strategic location near the Thames and position downwind of Westminster. Butchers would carry out their work in Clerkenwell before disposing of waste material in the nearby River Fleet, which was still at surface level. -

The person to whom books are delivered shall sign a receipt for them in a book provided for that purpose. 2. Books may be sent through the post, or by some equivalent means of carriage, upon a written order. All charges of carriage to the Institute shall be defrayed by the borrower. 3. A borrower may not have more than tlH3e& volumes in his possession at one time. 4. A borrower will be considered liable for the value of any book lost or damaged while on loan to him, and if it be a separate volume, for the value of the whole work rendered imperfect. Marking or writing in the volumes is not permitted, and borrowers are requested to call attention to damage of this character. 5. Books may be retained for 28 days. Periodicals may be retained for 14 days. Applications for extension of the loan period must be made in writing before its expiry. No book may be kept longer than 3 months. New books will not be lent until after the expiration of one month from the date of their having been received by the Institute. The current number of a periodical may not be borrowed. 6. Borrowers retaining books longer than the time specified, and neglecting to return them when demanded, forfeit the right to borrow books until the volume or volumes be returned, and for such further time as may be ordered.
