TO RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT IS PART OF OUR NATURE

At Sonae Arauco we are committed to the concept of sustainable utilisation of the raw materials and we actively respect these principles in all our business practices.

The basis of the quality provided by its products is the use of wood from sustainably managed and carefully controlled origins. Under the scope of this policy, Sonae Arauco has PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council®) certification.

The use of controlled origin wood makes it possible to assure forest sustainability, developing its economic, environmental and social functions, in particular through: Conservation of classified habitats and ecological corridors; Promotion of the enrichment of soils; Conservation of biodiversity; Promotion of employment in rural areas; Respect for the legal rights of forest properties; Identification and promotion of different forest uses.

The EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) from the Bauen und Umwelt e.V. Institute gives a transparent view of the environmental impact of Sonae Arauco products.

The EPD provides the database for environmental assessment of buildings that use Sonae Arauco products, in accordance with EN 15978, and is based on international (EN ISO 14025, EN ISO 14040) and European EN 15804 standards.

All Sonae Arauco factories meet internationally recognised standards in terms of occupational safety, as well as environmental, quality and energy management standards. This is confirmed by the OHSAS 18001, EN ISO 14001, EN ISO 9001 and ISO 50001 certification for the entire group.

LEED CERTIFICATION

LEED is a programme created by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). It certifies the sustainability of buildings according to resource rationalisation criteria (energy, water, etc.).

Encompassing a wide variety of buildings, LEED certification has been changing the way buildings are planned, constructed and maintained. LEED certification is wide-ranging, flexible and covers the entire lifecycle of a building, providing the necessary to improve building performance and create a better environment for their occupants.

For sustainable construction, planners should consider choosing sustainable materials that contribute to obtaining LEED certification. The use of Sonae Arauco products gives 5 LEED credits provided that:

WHY USE WOOD-BASED PRODUCTS?

Wood-based boards basically include a set of composite materials and a WOOD-BASED binder () and may incorporate several different additives, such as moisture PRODUCTS resistant, fire retardant and preserving agents. There are clear advantages to using wood-based boards, rather than , in particular: 1 Availability in different types and formats adapted to the user’s needs; Physical and Mechanical They allow for much larger sizes than sawn solid wood; Properties Greater resistance in the of the board;

Good strength-to-weight ratio; 2 Greater dimensional stability; Dimensional Flexibility Obtaining homogeneous products.

In addition to the technical arguments for choosing wood-based products in 3 applications they are recommended for, their good environmental performance Ease of Transformation should also be pointed out, in particular:

Wood-based panels generally contribute to the sustainable use of forest 4 resources; Aesthetic Wealth They promote better use of wood resources, as the materials that cannot be used to manufacture panels are used to generate the energy required for the process;

The production of wood-based products allows industrial use of wood from secondary forest species.

Forests are a recognised carbon sink (photosynthesis) and derivative products are authentic carbon stores. In this case, the wood- based products are long-lasting carbon stores, in particular if used in construction and if they are recycled.

IN EACH PRODUCT, AN INNOVATIVE WOOD SOLUTION

Our goal is to develop solutions inspired by wood that combine industrial knowledge, functionality, quality, design and price. More than creating wood-based products, we provide solutions that improve people’s lives.

Wood-based panels are the basis of everything we do and the most sustainable, flexible and functional alternative to solid wood. They are a more efficient way to use resources and have a greater dimensional flexibility, allowing us to create solutions tailored to people’s needs. We are proud to develop and produce alternatives to solid wood products for a growing number of applications, such as furniture for the home and office, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, doors, and decorative articles.

Our base products:

PB FR | FIRE RETARDANT

Particleboard for indoor use, with improved fire performance

PB FR is a particleboard with added fire retardants. It has a fine, sanded finish, making it suitable for countless decorative surfaces applications, such as melamine, veneer or laminate.

Given its fire retardant properties, this product helps to delay combustion. This means that when it is submitted to the fire high temperature, (reaching 700ºC in the first few minutes), it does not deform like steel, crack like plaster or melt like . This allows greater reaction and intervention time for fire fighting and delaying the fire spread, as it does not give off flames or inflammable particles. These vital extra minutes can contribute to save lives, money and property.

Sonae Arauco products are tested in external laboratories and are subject to regular performance and production process assessment and verification, in accordance with system 1 of EN 13986. In these tests, the release rates of heat and smoke are monitored and recorded by instruments and the physical transformations of the products are observed.

ADVANTAGES APPLICATIONS

GLOSSARY

CARB 2 – The CARB 2 class is defined by a regulation (93120.12, title 17, California Code of Regulations) of the State of California in the United States, which was adopted by several multinational furniture chains for specification of their wood-based products. The formaldehyde limit is set at 0.11 ppm. The main method of measurement is the so-called chamber method described in the ASTM E 1333 standard.

F4* - This class of formaldehyde applies primarily to wood used in construction or furniture and decoration objects designed for spaces subject to restricted regulations regarding indoor air quality. It corresponds to a product with very low formaldehyde content (0.03 mg/l) in accordance with Japanese legislation (test method JIS A 1460).

NAF (No Added Formaldehyde) – No formaldehyde- base glue is used in the production of NAF products. It currently represents the most demanding standard for formaldehyde emissions in wood-based products.
