Masonite Siding 101: Why It's Bad News
Moving into a new home is a great feeling of accomplishment. Fixer-uppers have been a trend in the real estate market for some time now, and for a great reason. Often minor cosmetic adjustments to homes can have a major impact. But what happens when you find a problem that isn’t so DIY-friendly? Discovering masonite siding, also known as "fiberboard" or "hardboard", may unearth more serious problems for an older home. Masonite Siding 101: Hardboard is an engineered wood product that is comparable to particle board. This product is made from compressed wood fibers so it does not have a grain like solid wood. However, a wood veneer may be formatted over the product so it appears to be solid. If you’re unsure if your siding is in fact masonite, check unfinished areas like the attic for manufacturer’s markings. Another way to tell that your home has Masonite is the way that it is deteriorating -- look for flakes, curls and swelling in damaged areas. Masonite is know for extensive use in various industries for its durability and flexibility. During the 1980s and 1990s this product was used as exterior siding for many new construction homes. It was widely used for its low cost compared to regular siding material. Why It's Bad News: As one could imagine, a product with fibers is easily susceptible to moisture damage. The compression process often leaves only one side of the product smooth which proves to be a greater risk for water issues. Over time, masonite swells and rots if continuously exposed to the elements. -

The mixingratios of lignocellulosics fibers was 20% which is from okra and tobaccos talks, hazelnut and walnuts hell, and pinecone for each mixture in preformed panel and commercially- manufactured-chip was 100 % for the control sample. A commercial ureaformaldehyde (UF) adhesive was used as a binder. The physical and mechanical properties such as density, thickness swelling (TS), bending strength (BS), modulus elasticity (MOE), internalbond (IB), screw holding ability (SHA) perpendicular to the plane of panel, Janka hardness perpendicular to the plane of panel properties of MDF were measured.The results indicated that all the panels met the general purpose-use requirements of TS-EN. Thus, our results suggest that biomass from different sources can be an alternative raw material for MDF manufacturing process. A Timber-Framed Building at No. 302 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh
Anne Crone and Diana Sproat Revealing the History Behind the Facade: A Timber-framed Building at No. 302 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh The property at No. 302 Lawnmarket, Edinburgh, is a rare survival of a ‘timber land’, the timber-framed buildings that were once commonplace along the city’s Royal Mile and elsewhere in Scotland in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Two painted panels survive as components of the timber frontage, providing insights into the nature and function of the galleries that projected from these buildings. The building also retains fragments of two richly decorated board-and-beam ceilings, the beams of which have been successfully dated by dendrochronology. One possible interpretation of the dendrochronological results is that multi-storied tenements such as No. 302 may not have been conceived as such but were built upwards in stages, the platform-framing of the box-like construction allowing for storey-by-storey development. Background Between 2006 and 2008, AOC Archaeology Group undertook a detailed survey of Nos. 302–304 Lawnmarket, two Category A listed tenement buildings located within the Old Town of Edinburgh. The work was undertaken as part of a planning condition for the redevelopment of a large plot located at the junction between George IV Bridge and the Lawnmarket, now the Missoni Hotel. The buildings have now been incorporated into this development, with shops on the ground floor and hotel accommodation on the upper levels (Figure 1). As with many of the medieval tenements along the Royal Mile, the buildings have, throughout their history, provided commercial premises on their ground floors and basements, and accommodation in the upper floors. -

This work was focussed on the recognition of the emission of volatile compounds resulting from the combustion of engineered wood products waste. This kind of waste is broadly used for heating purposes in an unauthorised way, giving rise to unorganised emissions. The recognition of such events is very difficult due to the complexity of the produced gas mixture. We proposed to apply differential ion mobility spectrometry (DMS). This is a promising technique in terms of complex gas mixtures measurements. The recognition was based on the measurements of ambient air in the vicinity of the emission source and classification. The ensemble of classification trees was chosen as the classier. The obtained results showed that volatile compounds resulting from the combustion of wood based boards waste produced the distinctive DMS spectra, which could be used as the basis for the effective recognition. We achieved almost 100 % successful recognition of: 1) ambient air which contained volatile compounds resulting from OSB board waste combustion, 2) ambient air which contained volatile compounds resulting from MDF board waste combustion, and 3) ambient air, which was did not contain volatile compounds of this kind. The presented results have a considerable practical value. The DMS spectrometer was successfully applied to recognize wood-based boards waste combustion in field conditions. -
