Dec 2019 - Jan 2020 FREE ISSN 2058-2226 All things Festive in Kensington An end to another year (our 14th to be precise)! As always in December, we would like to thank our writers who so graciously give up their time each month, helping us to bring to you little or unknown facts about this special place we live and work. So my personal thanks to Maria, Charles, Dave, Sarah, Nick, Ben, Aletta and Victoria. Speaking of unknown facts, I expect you thought that it was Prince Albert who brought the Christmas Tree to the UK - well find out in Ben’s article which member of a Royal Family it actually was! We hope in this edition we have given you a salient perspective on all events, of all types, going on in Kensington & South Kensington over the festive period, and into January. We will be returning in February. In the meantime, I wish you and your loved ones, a very special 2019 Christmas, Lucy Front Cover: Promotional material for this year’s Cirque du Soleil performance at the Royal Albert Hall (by kind courtesy of EMG-ENTS) CONTENTS How Christmas was heralded in the past 4 Sarah’s guide to a festive Christmas 6 Festive Kensington High St. 8 History of the Christmas Tree in Royal Circles 10 Kensington News 12-14 Get Well Spoon: Sweeny Todds Pantomime Pie 18 Kensington Crossword 22 Kensington Cultural Quarter What’s On 26-30 Small Box Advertisements 31 Lucy Elliott, Editor South Kensington Cultural Quarter What’s On 32-33 (Hair by Toby of Hairspace, at Annie Russell) Read by 34,500 residents and businesses CONTRIBUTORS each month. Some places are already organised. The Ivy is, as usual, magnificent. Trees and wreaths hung with scarlet and gold brighten its façade, while Marks & Spencer has a wonderful in- store theme of "halos". Sparkling circles of silver lights are suspended from the ceiling above the Christmas merchandise in those parts of the store already displaying cards, baubles, tree decorations and party frocks, but passengers arriving at High Street Kensington Underground Station may be in for a surprise. A company famous for creating seasonal decorations will this year be designing the lighting in the Kensington Arcade from the Central Dome to the High Street Entrance. Their clients include P&O Cruises, Selfridges and other lavish spenders. The proposals for Kensington include chandeliers, lanterns, green branches, swathed in red ribbons and everything that glitters, or glows.
