  • Gothic Taxonomies: Heredity and Sites of Domestication in Nineteenth-Century British Fiction
GOTHIC TAXONOMIES: HEREDITY AND SITES OF DOMESTICATION IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITISH FICTION By Elizabeth M. Pellerito A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY English 2012 ABSTRACT GOTHIC TAXONOMIES: HEREDITY AND SITES OF DOMESTICATION IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY BRITISH FICTION By Elizabeth M. Pellerito This project reads the ways in which systems of taxonomy and gothic novels, when read together, chart the history of nineteenth-century theories of heredity. By pitting Enlightenment empiricist and rationalist thought against gothic novels, literary critics have posited the two fields as diametrically opposed entities. However, I argue here that the gothic novel translates naturalists’ and taxonomists’ questions about species, applying them to the social, political and biological structure of the human family. The central term of the project, “gothic taxonomy,” refers to the moments in each of these disciplines, and in the exchanges between them, that describe failed systematizations, the simultaneous necessity and impossibility of nineteenth- century attempts to encapsulate the laws of hereditary transmission in a single set of natural laws. By reading taxonomy as a process with social and political consequences, this project provides much-needed nuance to the often reductive critical debates about hereditarians and their foes during the nineteenth century. Revising and complicating these notions forces us to rethink the gothic as a discourse that is merely oppositional in nature, existing only to challenge the narratives of Enlightenment. Reading the gothic as an interpretive model that actively unpacks the inconsistencies of systematization, rather than simply as a reactionary celebration of the irrational or the subconscious, allows us to read it as a discourse with a real contribution of its own to make to scientific debates about the biological and social role of heredity during the period.

  • Shops Aug 2012
1 SHOPS Shops Among London’s main attractions are the long streets full of shops, some of which are famous throughout the world. All of those listed here were visited during 2011. Our survey teams found that access to shops has improved considerably in recent years. In particular there are fewer split levels, more accessible toilets, and more BCF. However, few have textphone details on their website and there are still a small number with unexpected split levels. Importantly, attitudes have changed, and staff members are more often understanding of special needs than was the case ten years ago. In this chapter we have concentrated mainly on the Oxford Street/Regent Street area, as well as including famous shops like Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Peter Jones and Fortnum and Mason. We have also included a few shops on Kensington High Street, and around Victoria. We have only visited and described a tiny percentage of London’s shops, so please do not be limited by listings in this section. Nearly all the big shops we have described have accessible toilets. Access is generally good, although the majority of the big stores have central escalators. The lifts are less obvious and may even be slightly difficult to find. Signage is highly variable. Most big department stores have a store guide/listing near the main entrance, or at the bottom of escalators, but these do not normally take account of access issues. A few have printed plans of the layout of each floor (which may be downloadable from their website), but these aren’t always very clear or accurate.

  • A Vulnerability-Based Approach to Human-Mobility Reduction for Countering
A vulnerability-based approach to human-mobility reduction for countering COVID-19 transmission in London while considering local air quality Manu Sasidharan1*+, Ajit Singh2, 3*+, Mehran Eskandari Torbaghan4*, Ajith Kumar Parlikad1 1Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, CB2 1PZ, United Kingdom 5 2School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT, United Kingdom. 3Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, B15 2TT, United Kingdom. 4Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, 10 Birmingham, B15 2TT, United Kingdom. *Correspondence to: [email protected] (M.S.); [email protected] (A.S.); [email protected] (M.E.T.) + Equal contribution 15 1 20 Abstract An ecologic analysis was conducted to explore the correlation between air pollution, and COVID- 19 cases and fatality rates in London. The analysis demonstrated a strong correlation (R2>0.7) between increment in air pollution and an increase in the risk of COVID-19 transmission within London boroughs. Particularly, strong correlations (R2>0.72) between the risk of COVID-19 25 fatality and nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter pollution concentrations were found. Although this study assumed the same level of air pollution across a particular London borough, it demonstrates the possibility to employ air pollution as an indicator to rapidly identify the city’s vulnerable regions. Such an approach can inform the decisions to suspend or reduce the operation of different public transport modes within a city.
