Introduction The Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) has been promoted by the Government of West Bengal as an autonomous centre of excellence in social sciences. It was founded in 2002 as a society with an autonomous governing body with one of the most eminent historians in India, Professor Irfan Habib as President, Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi as Director and with a Governing Council on which are represented the Vice- Chancellors of two leading Universities in West Bengal, namely Calcutta University and Jadavpur University. The Governing Council also includes such eminent academics as Professor Nirmal Chandra, Professor Suranjan Das, Professor V.K. Ramachandran and Professor Malini Bhattacharya as its members. The IDSK is devoted to advanced academic research and informed policy advice in the areas of literacy, education, health, gender issues, employment, technology, communication, human sciences and economic development. Akademi is taking April 25, 2017, Vijayawada more responsibility to publish valuable literature in all languages. After that he presented Bhasha Samman to Sri Nagalla Guruprasadarao, Prof. T.R Damodaran and Smt. T.S Saroja Sundararajan. Later the Awardees responded. Sri Nagalla Guruprasadarao expressed his gratitude towards the Akademi for the presentation of the Bhasha Samman. He said that among the old poets Mahakavai Tikkana is his favourite. In his writings one can see the panoramic picture of Telugu Language both in usage and expression. He expressed his thanks to Sivalenka Sambhu Prasad and Narla Venkateswararao for their encouragement. Prof. Damodaran briefed the gathering about the Sourashtra dialect, how it migrated from Gujarat to Tamil Nadu and how the Recipients of Bhasha Samman with the President and Secretary of Sahitya Akademi cultural of the dialect has survived thousands of years. He expressed his gratitude to Sahitya Akademi for Sahitya Akademi organised the presentation of Bhasha honouring his mother tongue, Sourashtra. He said Samman on April 25, 2017 at Siddhartha College of that the Ramayana, Jayadeva Ashtapathi, Bhagavath Arts and Science, Siddhartha Nagar, Vijayawada, Geetha and several books were translated into Andhra Pradesh.     NEW LITERARIA- An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities Volume 2, No. 1, January-February, 2021, PP. 11-20 ISSN: 2582-7375 DOI: https://dx.doi.org/10.48189/nl.2021.v02i1.002 www.newliteraria.com Partition or its Phantasm?: Sixty-five Years after the Cracking of Bengal Sarbani Banerjee Abstract The article studies two films, Lizard (Tiktiki in Bengali, 2012) directed by Raja Dasgupta, which is a small-screen drama aired as a telefilm in Tara TV Bangla, and Anik Dutta-directed The Ghost’s Future (Bhooter Bhabishyat in Bengali, 2012), which became a big hit on the silver screen. Analyses of these two artworks reveal how and why the phantasm of partition, even more than partition itself, remains a key point of reference in defining the everyday spirit of post-Partition West Bengal. In both these films made sixty-five years after the Bengal Partition, fiction picks on history by means of over-used notions. The article examines why, after several decades of Partition, art is exploited to appeal to the sentimentalist standpoint of ‘The Refugee Experience,’ even as so much scholarship is emerging that examines Partition in all its complexity. Who and what does ‘The Refugee Experience’ represent today? Who is the spokesperson for ‘authentic Bengali-ness’ in the recent socio-cultural context of Kolkata? TConcrete, beaurocratic, surveillance, security, racist walls” (Berger 88)—of walls that pervaded every sphere. And the more we had talked about razing these walls among races, castes, religions, or disciplines, greater had been the urge to consolidate our frontiers, and to raise walls of prejudice and parochialism that kept us as captives in our small cocoons. Nazim Hikmet, who was a political prisoner in Turkey for thirteen years, while talking about his experiences of incarceration in one of his prison poems had once written, They have taken us prisoners, They’ve locked us up. But that’s nothing. The worst is when people—knowingly or not— carry prison inside themselves.1 And the worst of these prisons that we carry within ourselves and all around us are perhaps those that are built on obdurate religious dogmas, because they point at a dangerous entente among political, religious, and economic interests, ultimately driven by a sectarian aim which sanctions and legitimizes genocidal violence in history. India’s blood-stained Partition, which was deemed as an inevitable result of the ethnic clashes between two supposedly antagonistic religious communities— the Hindus and the Muslims—in the subcontinent is an example of such carnage. In fact, Britain’s transfer of power to its colonial subjects that coincided with the country’s vivisection at the cusp of India’s independence in 1947 was fraught with such macabre memories of violence that it propelled the official historiographers of independent India and Pakistan into a forced amnesia about the Partition.
