THE D1MBULA-UVA RAILWAY EXTENSION : (www.historyofceylontea.com)THE NAWALAPITIYA-NANCOYA SECTION OF 4fle MMES. This scheme of Railway Extension from Nawslapitiya Ambagamuwa, Dikoya.and Dimbula into Uva as far ns Hapittale Pass, a total dibtanee of 67 miles, was originally suggested and &Ivor:Veil by the Editors of the Cey- lon Obserrer (A. The first Memorill on the subject, sup- ported by the planting and mercantile community, was presented to Sir Wm• Gregory in June 1872, and he appointed a Commis-i m of Enquiry and ordered flying eurveys of different routes to be made. The result was a unanimous recommendation to construct the line as originally proposed in the Observer, and a Staff of Engineers arrived in 1875 to make a complete survey and to form estimates and working plane. Not till 1877 was much progress mnde, and then unfortunately Sir James Longden became Governor, and he decided to cut the original scheme iu two, giving out it contract for only 41i miles to Nunn- .
