Molecular Cytogenetics (2015) 8:56 DOI 10.1186/s13039-015-0161-4 RESEARCH Open Access Comparative cytogenetics in the genus Hoplias (Characiformes, Erythrinidae) highlights contrasting karyotype evolution among congeneric species Ezequiel Aguiar de Oliveira1,2, Luiz Antônio Carlos Bertollo1, Cassia Fernanda Yano1, Thomas Liehr3 and Marcelo de Bello Cioffi1* Abstract Background: The Erythrinidae fish family contains three genera, Hoplias, Erythrinus and Hoplerythrinus widely distributed in Neotropical region. Remarkably, species from this family are characterized by an extensive karyotype diversity, with 2n ranging from 39 to 54 chromosomes and the occurrence of single and/or multiple sex chromosome systems in some species. However, inside the Hoplias genus, while H. malabaricus was subject of many studies, the cytogenetics of other congeneric species remains poorly explored. In this study, we have investigated chromosomal characteristics of four Hoplias species, namely H. lacerdae, H. brasiliensis, H. intermedius and H. aimara. We used conventional staining techniques (C-banding, Ag-impregnation and CMA3 -fluorescence) as well as fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with minor and major rDNA and microsatellite DNAs as probes in order to analyze the karyotype evolution within the genus. Results: All species showed invariably 2n = 50 chromosomes and practically identical karyotypes dominated only by meta- and submetacentric chromosomes, the absence of heteromorphic sex chromosomes, similar pattern of C-positive heterochromatin blocks and homologous Ag-NOR-bearing pairs. The cytogenetic mapping of five repetitive DNA sequences revealed some particular interspecific differences between them. However, the examined chromosomal characteristics indicate that their speciation was not associated with major changes in their karyotypes. -

Após um ano desafiador, renovamos nossas esperanças com as notícias promissoras sobre a chegada de vacinas. Primeiramente, gostaríamos de atualizá-los sobre um aspecto bastante importante: as Eleições para a Diretoria e Conselho Deliberativo da nossa sociedade. Conforme comunicamos anteriormente, em função da pandemia do novo coronavírus e do adiamento do EBI 2021, as próximas eleições para os cargos de Diretoria e do Conselho Deliberativo, que ocorrem a cada dois anos, acontecerão de maneira remota em 2021, por meio de plataforma online já contratada. No início deste Editorial explicamos um pouco mais sobre como ocorrerão as eleições. Esperamos que leiam atentamente e nos contatem caso tenham dúvidas. VAGAS A SEREM PREENCHIDAS 1) Diretoria: são 3 (três) vagas para as funções de Presidente, Secretário(a) e Tesoureiro(a). 2) Conselho Deliberativo da SBI: o Conselho Deliberativo é composto por 7 (sete) membros. Duas destas vagas se encontram preenchidas por membros eleitos em 2019 para gestões de 4 (quatro) anos, e uma terceira vaga será automaticamente ocupada pela atual Presidente da SBI, assim que encerrar sua gestão. Otocinclus mimulus has been confused with O. flexilis up till now. Otocinclus mimulus mimics O. diphyes. The mimesis is unusual because the two species occupy different microhabitats and it is hypothesized to operate with a primarily visual predator moving between the microhabitats, tentatively identified as the cichlid Crenicichla lepidota. -
Revision of the Neotropical Trahiras of the Hoplias Lacerdae Species-Group (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Erythrinidae) with Descriptions of Two New Species

Oyakawa1 and George M. T. Mattox2 Hoplias lacerdae was originally described from the rio Ribeira de Iguape, Iporanga, São Paulo State. The Hoplias lacerdae group is defined as containing generally large trahiras with the medial margins of dentaries running parallel to each other and lacking teeth on the basihyal compared to the H. malabaricus group in which the medial margins of the dentaries converge towards the mandibular symphysis and which have teeth on the basihyal. A taxonomic revision of the group based on meristic and morphometric data identified five distinct species: H. lacerdae distributed in the rio Ribeira de Iguape and rio Uruguai; H. intermedius from the rio São Francisco, upper rio Paraná basin, and rio Doce; H. brasiliensis from rivers of the Atlantic Coastal drainage from the rio Paraguaçu to the rio Jequitinhonha; H. australis new species, endemic to the rio Uruguai; and H. curupira new species present in northern South America, including the rios Negro, Trombetas, Tapajós, Xingu, Tocantins and Capim in the Amazon basin, upper rio Orinoco near the rio Casiquiare (Venezuela), and coastal rivers of Guyana and Suriname. A lectotype for Hoplias intermedius and a neotype for H. brasiliensis are designated. Hoplias lacerdae foi descrita originalmente do rio Ribeira de Iguape, Iporanga, São Paulo. O grupo Hoplias lacerdae foi definido como um conjunto de espécies para abrigar as traíras geralmente de grande porte, com as margens mediais dos dentários dispostas paralelamente e sem dentes no basi-hial, em oposição às traíras do grupo Hoplias malabaricus, cujas margens mediais dos dentários convergem em direção à sínfise mandibular e possuem dentes no basi-hial. -

Editor in charge: Uwe Fritz Abstract A new miniature species of the freshwater fsh genus Priocharax is described from the Rio Jamari, Rio Madeira drainage, Amazon basin. Priocharax varii sp. n. is the fourth species currently recognized in the genus and shares with the other three the presence of a conspicuous larval pectoral fn in adults, a fully toothed maxilla, a triangular pseudotympanum situated anterior to the ffth vertebra and a tiny size com- bined with a translucent body. The new species is diagnosed from congeners in having an adipose fn, a unique feature within Priocharax. Molecular identifcation of the new species and the other valid Priocharax species supports the morphological fndings. -

The mimetic association expressed by C. diphyes and O. mimulus extends to other species pairs of the same genera in southern South America with similarly impressive agreement in coloration, but the operating mechanism is not known in these pairs. In a cladistic analysis of Otocinclus using morphological characters, O. mimulus is included in a clade consisting also of O. flexilis and O. affinis. Addition of mimetic similarity results in a single most parsimonious tree with O. mimulus, O. flexilis, O. affinis and O. xakriaba forming a monophyletic group.
