CTK bulletin Article #3: (Feb 17/18) Sister Parish Notes Our Sister Parish, St. Benedict Parish, is located in Tanzania. Here is Some History: European exploration of the interior of Tanzania began in the mid-19th century. In 1848 the German missionary Johannes Rebmann became the first European to see Mount Kilimanjaro. British explorers Richard Burton and John Speke crossed the interior to Lake Tanganyika in June 1857. In January 1866, the Scottish explorer and missionary David Livingstone, who crusaded against the slave trade, went to Zanzibar, from where he sought the source of the Nile, and established his last mission at Ujiji on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. After having lost contact with the outside world for years, he was "found" there on November 10, 1871. Henry Morton Stanley, who had been sent on a publicity stunt to find him by the New York Herald newspaper, greeted him with the now famous words "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?" Between 1881 and 1914, the New Imperialism emerged, characterized by a period of colonial expansion. In Africa, this meant a scramble by European powers to divide and colonize the continent. Mainland Tanzania was administered by German East Africa. After the end of the World War I the treaty of Versailles, in 1919, granted Britain a League of Nations mandate to govern the former German East Africa. Its name was changed to Tanganyika. British rule came to an end in 1961, when Tanganyika attained its independence. Also in 1963, Zanzibar had its Revolution to overthrow the Arab dynasty. On April 26, 1964, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged, and the beautiful name of Tanzania was formed using parts of the names of both nations. The capital of Tanzania is Dodoma, which is centrally located on mainland, but Dar es Salaam remains the center for business and the seat of most government administration.
