AndrewCarey: Many of you will remember the constant refrain of right wing commentators in the 1980s and 1990s whenever the church strayed into political areas. ‘The church should keep its nose out of politics and stick to theology and morality,’ they har- rumphed. The ‘harrumphing’ is now being done on the left. The most extraordinaryand ViewfromthePew ignorant Leader from the Independent newspaper (‘Payday lenders: the Church should keep to matters spiritual’, 26 July 2013) claimed that religion is essentially aprivate matter and that religious leaders therefore“have no business in mainstream politics”. In fact, the new atheism of the left goes further than the church’s critics of the past, because they seek to disqualify any religious voice in the public square. Religious faith is not and never has been aprivate matter and in any free democracy everyvoice has an equal right to Welby’s doing well contribute to the public square. Luke12:32-40

This Sunday we hear three challenging angles on the futurefor God’s people. Isaiah is our Old Testament reading for the next two weeks. His vision is addressed to the people of Judah, but in particular to their capital city,Jerusalem. It is something of ajolt, then, for him to address this major faith capital as “Sodom” and “Gomorrah” in verse 10. The people of faith have become as evil as those infa- mously degraded cities. As aresult, their worship is empty and loathsome —perhaps not to them; it proba- bly feels lavish and spectacular and appropriately digni- fied to them —but certainly to the God it is meant to be focused upon. Though many in our culturemay think that God should be happy with whatever he can get these days, the truth is he hides his eyes and closes his ears to thosewho only want to engagehim superficially. The Sabbath performance is not sufficient. He hates the religious mask that covers apagan heart. Yeteven to hypocrites, the offer of forgiveness is open: their scarlet sins can be like snow. But repen- tance is not cheap, and Isaiah declares that only the willing and obedient will eat the good of the land and avoid the impending doom. AwordtoJudah, as the Assyrian comes down like awolf on the fold to devour their near-neighbourIsrael. Awordtoother cities and other churches which have become indistinguishable from Gomorrah, and as inhospitablefor the faithful as Sodom. Will repentance be forthcoming? Will it be in time? The city in view in Hebrews 11 is afar better place to hope for, with firmer foundations by far.Abraham knew it only by faith, astranger in aforeign land most of his life. With little earthly futureitseemed, but with the promise of God in his pocket all the way.His distant homeland was aheavenly countryprepared by God, for which it is worth forsaking the comforts of this life and the familiar desires of an earth-bound existence. Too often we areashamed to admit our attachment to Jesus in aworld that despises his name and pours scornon hisways; but the issue in Hebrews 11:16 is whether London gay pride God will be ashamed to stand by his covenant with us, not the other way around.
