In the First Part I have endeavored to give a general presentation of the rules and principles of versification practiced by the Class- ical, Romantic, Parnassian and Symbolistic schools of poetry. In the body of examples I have shown to what extent these rules are followed by the five poets whose works have been examined. It would be out of the sphere of this work to discuss the occasional violations of these principles found in the verses examined, as those referring to the question of hemistich or cesura, rime, overflow, mute e, etc.

Performing Identities in the art of John Singer Sargent Abstract In the elegant society portraits by John Singer Sargent, body language created social identities. The fallen dress strap and obvious makeup in Madame X, for example, declared her a “professional beauty”; the costume of Charles Stewart proclaimed him a British lord. Critics often conflated appearance and character in Sargent's images, yet Sargent used theatre and masquerade in numerous works to problematize essentialist links between appearance and character that were fundamental to turn-of-the-century class, gender, and racial stereotypes. This dissertation concentrates on the art Sargent produced after Madame X, as he recovered from the scandal it provoked in 1884 and as he established his patron base in England and America. Many of Sargent's later works can be seen as a response to the issues raised by Madame X concerning the relationship between appearance and character. An analysis of theatrical elements in Sargent's paintings elucidates the function of these images in variously maintaining and challenging notions of social identity. Chapter One discusses the critical reception of Sargent's art in the context of a turn-of-the-century culture engaged in classification and performance activities.

  • Romancing the Mélodie a Hugo Cycle?
1 Romancing the mélodie A Hugo Cycle? Fauré’s first song cycle dates from 1878, but our story begins much earlier at the École Niedermeyer. Fauré’s student songs, written between 1861 and 1864, already give a taste of the cyclic impulse that would come to dominate his songwriting. This pre- monition does not appear in musical devices, whether key schemes, thematic recol- lections, or recurring motives; these features come and go across his seven song cycles. Nor can we locate it in a narrative, for three of those cycles lack any story line. The telltale element in Fauré’s adolescent songs is a common poetic vision, a reading that transcends the individual author and poems and engages deeper artistic con- cerns. As in his later song cycles, Fauré grasped poetry not merely as a source of evocative texts but as a nexus of technical and aesthetic issues bearing on his his- torical moment. And the issue that unites his earliest songs is genre. Fauré’s student songs demonstrate his lifelong penchant for focusing on a single poet, indeed, a single collection. All six have texts by Victor Hugo and five come from Les chants du crépuscule (1835). Fauré mined Hugo’s volume for “Le papillon et la fleur,” “Puisque j’ai mis ma lèvre,” “Mai,” “L’aube naît,” and “S’il est un charmant gazon” (published as “Rêve d’amour”). “Puisque j’ai mis ma lèvre” remained unpub- lished and “L’aube naît” has vanished entirely, although it is mentioned alongside the other songs in a letter from 1864.1 Fauré set yet another poem from Les chants du crépuscule, “L’aurore s’allume,” toward the end of the decade.

1 Discordant Harmonies and Turbulent Serenity: The Ecopoetic Rhythms of Nature’s – and Art’s – Resistance David Evans (University of St Andrews, UK) Abstract This article argues that the poetic and critical writings of Théodore de Banville represent a concerted and successful attempt to give the natural world an independent voice in literature. Ecocriticism calls for creative practices and reading strategies that refuse to see humankind as separate from nature, and allow it to resist any colonizing gestures that might presume to speak on its behalf. While the poetry of Lamartine, Hugo, Vigny and Leconte de Lisle features nature throughout, its ecopoetic potential is weakened by simplistic urban/rural oppositions which construct a nostalgic idyll as a refuge from industry, progress and society. Banville, however, places humankind at the heart of a nature pulsating with the restless energy of animistic spirits. Nature, for him, shares with genuine art an unassimilable quality. His writings on painting and poetry express this irreducible essence through interart analogies and oxymoron, while the verse of Les Exilés consistently places natural phenomena at points of tension between traditional cultural forms and a rebellious, unpredictable syntax. Keywords Poetry; environment; ecocriticism; versification; painting; interart; oxymoron; Vigny; Leconte de Lisle; Banville Biographical note David Evans is Senior Lecturer in French at the University of St Andrews. He works on rhythm, music and form in French poetry of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and is the author of Rhythm, Illusion and the Poetic Idea: Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarmé (Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2004) and Théodore de Banville: Constructing Poetic Value in Nineteenth-Century France (Oxford: Legenda, 2014).
