Your suggestion sounds like a good idea, so I visited the site this morning to see what is possible. I measured the road widths every 20 metres between the Love Lane junction and the brow of the hill (close to the triangular roundabout warning sign). The total length is 340 metres. Of this only about 150 metres is currently wide enough to allow installation of an uphill cycle lane. However, we could install cycle symbols on the remaining section without demarcating a lane and move the centreline over a little so that the uphill side is wider than the downhill side.

As this falls within Cllr Sheila Cooks ward, and Parish, I have forwarded this email to them to check whether they would have any objection to the installation of an uphill cycle lane on Blackhorse Hill. Provided that they do not have any objections, I will supply Streetcare with a drawing so that they can install the cycle lane at the same time as the resurfacing.

I trust this is helpful.

Peter

Thank you for your comments. The installation of a new cycle lane or the adjustment of existing lining would be something that must be looked into by PT&SE. I have forwarded your Email on to the Engineers in Traffic Management for their comments.

Kind Regards

Jo

Thank you for this.

Ref: Blackhorse Hill, .. I am pleased to see this on the list for attention, especially as I receive many comments from my residents who use the road regularly.(though it is Sheila’s ward, not mine) One suggestion/ request that has been made to me several times: that where the road width permits, on the higher part of the road, that road markings should provide for a cycle lane, a cyclists climbing lane as such. This stretch of the road is where the loaded trucks from the brickworks lumber slowly up the hill. These trucks are now some of the largest permitted, being articulated and some with semi-trailers, consequently powered by massive diesel engines. The provision of an on-road lane would make non-motorised users feel much safer, where it can be achieved. I would be grateful if you could ask your engineers to look at this possibility.
