Scope and Contents

The People Photograph Collection includes images of people who are affiliated with the Baltimore Museum of Art or who have visited the museum. The collection is arranged into 10 series. The Staff series contains images of museum employees, volunteers, docents, members of the Women's Committee, interns, and fellows. Directors contains images of the museum's directors. Not all of the BMA's directors are represented in this series. Images of directors can also be found in the Trustees and Government Officials series. Trustees contains images of members of the Board of Trustees, in particular those who have served on the Executive Committee. Donors contains images of people who are major donors to the museum. Members contains images of BMA members. Government Officials contains images of local, state, and federal government officials who are engaged in activities related to the museum. Judges, Speakers, Guests, Artists, contains images of people, most of whom are museum directors or curators, instructors, or artists, who have visited, spoken, or performed at the BMA. Performers contains publicity photographs of performing artists who have appeared at museum events. Visitors contain images of children and adults visiting the museum galleries and grounds. Miscellaneous contains images of people whose affiliation to the BMA cannot be determined or who are unidentified. Most of the images in the Miscellaneous series are also undated. Formats include primarily black-and-white, but also color, photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, and slides.

Arrangement

The People Photograph Collection contains 10 series: 1. Staff; 2. Directors; 3. Trustees; 4. Donors; 5. Members; 6. Government Officials; 7. Judges, Speakers, Guests, Artists; 8. Performers; 9. Visitors; and 10. Miscellaneous. Within the series, the items are arranged primarily first in alphabetical order by the last name of the subject of the image, then in chronological order. In some cases, items are arranged by museum affiliation (e.g., Women's Committee) or activity. Series 9 is arranged by location in museum whenever possible. Negatives and slides have been separated from photographic prints and contact sheets for conservation purposes.

Provenance The majority of materials in this collection were deposited in the BMA Archives by the BMA Image Services and Rights Department. Additional groups of materials have been found in the BMA Archives between 2007 and 2015.

Processing Information This collection was originally processed as a series within the BMA Photograph Collection. The original Photograph Collection was processed from 2004-2014 by Emily Rafferty. Tracy Lewis processed, rearranged, added additional records, and wrote the finding aid for the People Photograph Collection from April until November 2015.

Arrangement

Most images are arranged alphabetically by staff member's name. However, some are arranged by department, committee name, or activity.

Scope and Contents

Series 1. Staff contains images of museum staff members and other people involved in the operation of the museum. Those additional individuals include volunteers, docents, Women's Committee members, interns, and fellows. The series includes both individual and group images, as well as images of staff and related individuals at work in the museum and in social settings. The series includes formal publicity and identification photographs of employees as well as images of the entire museum staff. The General folders include images of unindentified staff members. The images date from 1935 through 2011. The bulk of the images dates from the 1960s and early 1970s.

Scope and Contents

Series 3. Trustees contains images of members of the museum Board of Trustees, particularly those members who have served on the Executive Committee. Images depict individual members, the board as a group, and members attending board meetings and other activities. Formats include photographic prints, negatives, and slides that date from 1861 through 2007. Of note are group photographs of the museum's first Board of Trustees in 1923 and the 1954 Board, both of which include identification of the images' subjects.

Series 7. Judges, Speakers, Guests, Artists, contains images of museum directors and curators, instructors, artists, and others from around the world who may have visited the museum as primarily speakers, but also as judges, guests, or artists in residence. The photographs, negatives, and slides date from 1937 to 1999, although most of the images date 1960 to 1966. The General folder contains images of unidentified individuals. This series includes images of Grace Hartigan; Jim Palmer, Cal Ripken, Jr.; Brooks Robinson; Bill Weyse; and John Waters. It also includes a portrait of the Cone family. In some cases, images of two individuals were printed on the same negative. Cross references to applicable folders are provided in those instances.
