Lgbtpunk: Kernen I Den Moderne Queercore-Genre En Undersøgelse Af Narrativer I Queercore-Musik LGBTPunk: Kernen i den moderne queercore-genre En undersøgelse af narrativer i queercore-musik Mathias Lenda Thomsen Aalborg universitet, kandidatspeciale, forår 2021 Keywords: Queercore, punk, musical analysis, narrative, narrative analysis, thematic analysis, music online, Spotify playlists. Abstract This paper seeks to examine different narratives within contemporary queercore music from a hermeneutic perspective. As a self-proclaimed fan of punk music, and a queer person myself, this genre is of interest to me on a personal level. In writing this paper, it was especially important for me to consider how the narrative of different examples of contemporary queercore music is both present in a purely textual context as well as a musical one. Narratives within queercore are important, as it is foundational to the genre; it was a way for queer punkers to create their own narrative in an especially homophobic period of American history in the 1980’s. The basis for what constitutes contemporary queercore music in this paper is grounded in empirical gatherings from the official Spotify queercore-playlist. By way of elimination, I ended up selecting 13 pieces of music from this official playlist, which is supposed to represent some sort of notion of contemporary queercore music. In seeking to understand the connection of the two elements of narrative both as textual and musical constituents, I examined and was subsequently inspired by an article by Rob Fatal. His article itself examined narratives in lesbian queercore music from the 1990’s, which in part laid the foundation for my own interest in attempting a similar type of examination. To further examine the contemporary queercore music, I attempted to apply four characteristics of punk music, which Fatal presented in his own article, as a way to categorize the different songs. They include instrumentation, DIY-aesthetics, lyrical materiel, and vocal type. I also wished to apply Kate Hevners moodwheel, known from the world of musical psychology, when trying to describe these different songs’ sounds and moods, as condensed as possible. To further the process and level of categorization, I was inspired by thematic analysis and decided to apply this method in the construction of my analysis. I ended up concluding that narratives in contemporary queercore music can be as varied as quite possibly any other genre. Within the official playlist constituting a notion of contemporary queercore music, several different narratives are to be found. They range from songs which have the capacity of being antagonistic and critical of LGBT-bourgeois groups, to songs which assure the listener that life is worth living. My own ideas of what constitutes queercore music have been challenged and it would be interesting to analyze the official playlist further. Additionally, it could also be interesting to examine what constitutes contemporary queercore music in other, less “official”, online spaces. EMlstma Honner ii The Teaches of Peaches: Rethinking the Sex Hierarchy and the Limits of Gender Discourse Christina Bonner Master of Arts, Program in Communication and Culture Ryerson and York University 2010 Abstract: The goal of this Major Research paper is an exploration detailing how Canadian Electro-Pop artist Peaches Nisker transcends nonnative gender and sex politics through perfonnance and frames the female erotic experience in a way that not only disempowers heterosexuality but also provides a broader more inclusive sexual politics. Through this analysis I focus specifically on three distinct spheres; perfonnance, fandom and use of technology to argue that her critique of sexual conventions provides an cxpansive and transgressive new defmition of female sexuality. Musical perfonnances by female artists, particularly icons such as Madonna and Britney Spears, have demonstrated popular culture's inability to legitimize quecr and non compulsory heterosexual practices.

  • For the Love of It?: Zine Writing and the Study Of
FOR THE LOVE OF IT?: ZINE WRITING AND THE STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY AMATEUR WORK A Dissertation by EMILY SARA HOEFLINGER Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Mary Ann O’Farrell Committee Members, Sally Robinson Giovanna Del Negro Joan Wolf Head of Department, Maura Ives May 2016 Major Subject: English Copyright 2016 Emily Sara Hoeflinger ABSTRACT In this project, I am examining zines in relation to the question of contemporary amateurism. With the onset of Web 2.0 came a space for new forms of amateur work, but this new work hasn’t been addressed as “amateur,” which has revealed a problem between what theorists know the amateur to be and what has been embraced by mainstream culture. This oversimplification of the definition of amateurism seems to threaten the integrity of amateur work in general. I analyze the concepts “transparency” and “distance” and show that both highlight the need for preserving the amateur. I confront the notion of “for the love it” by interrogating the boundaries that zine writers have established and the misperception that zine work somehow remains on the fringe of capitalist culture. Moreover, I identify the Pro Am (professional amateur) as the most significant contemporary amateur figure because it directly challenges not only what it means to be professional, but also what it means to be amateur. By examining perzines and glossies, I argue that while “for the love of it” has been downplayed or even ignored, internal rewards are still an important factor in what makes an act amateur and that external rewards don’t always have to be monetary.

Women and their allies around the world have fought for change with passion, imagination and tenacity. Despite these efforts, not all women enjoy the same rights, depending on their race, class, disability, sexuality or the way they express their identity. The fight for a better world is unfinished business. Focussing on the United Kingdom, this exhibition shines a light on some of the extraordinary women and campaigns that insisted on change – and on those that continue to do so. But what is yet to come? Who else should be celebrated? What stories are missing? #UnfinishedBusiness 3 Gender equality in the UK and around the world These statistics are taken from the United Nation’s Gender Inequality Index. The measures in the Index provide a detailed picture of gender inequality in each country, and identify priority areas for improvement. The United Kingdom scores highly in many areas, and was ranked 27 of 162 countries in the latest 2018 Index. However, the fight for women’s rights is unfinished business, and the Index highlights how the UK can still improve gender equality. • Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film
i Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film by Alana Kornelsen A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016 Alana Kornelsen ii Abstract This thesis examines the use of diegetic pre-composed music in three American lesbian feature films. Numerous trends can be noted in the selection of music in lesbian film broadly— music is often selected to draw on insider knowledge of the target audience of these films, creating cachet. This cachet comes with accompanying “affiliating identifications” (Kassabian 2001) that allow music to be used in the films’ construction of characters’ identities. This is evident in the treatment of music in many lesbian films: characters frequently listen to, discuss, and perform music. This thesis focuses specifically on riot grrrl music and the closely linked genre of queercore (which together Halberstam ([2003] 2008) refers to as “riot dyke”) in three films that focus on the lives of young women: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (dir. Maria Maggenti, 1995), All Over Me (dir. Alex Sichel, 1997), and Itty Bitty Titty Committee (dir. Jamie Babbit, 2007). By examining how diegetic riot dyke music is used in these three films to build characters’ identities and contribute to the films’ narratives I argue that in these films, riot dyke music is presented as being central to certain queer identities and communities, and that this music (as well as the community that often accompanies it) is portrayed as instigating or providing opportunities for characters’ personal growth and affirming characters’ identities in adverse environments.
