Modern Girl (Live) Live in Paris is the first official record of Sleater-Kinney’s famously blistering stage performance. The thirteen track album, which features Carrie Brownstein, Corin Tucker, Janet Weiss, and touring member Katie Harkin, was captured on March 20th, 2015 at the Paris’s historic La Cigale venue, during the band’s sold-out, international tour in support of their acclaimed eighth album, 2015’s No Cities to Love. Live in Paris includes songs from nearly every Sleater-Kinney album, including No Cities to Love, The Woods, One Beat, The Hot Rock, Dig Me Out, and Call the Doctor. The recording was mixed by John Goodmanson at Avast and mastered by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound. The Hot Rock. Expectations for Sleater-Kinney's fourth album were stratospheric, with the raging, tuneful feminist catharsis of Call the Doctor and Dig Me Out having garnered near-universal critical raves and outlandish media hype. Afraid of falling into a predictable rut, though, the band bravely pushed its range of expression into more personal, subdued, and cerebral territory on The Hot Rock. That means the record isn't quite as immediately satisfying as its two brilliant predecessors, but it does reward those willing to spend time absorbing its nervy introspection and moodiness. Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein push relentlessly for more complex interplay, both in their vocal and instrumental work; even the gentlest songs might break into unexpected dissonance or take an angular, off-kilter melodic direction. As such, there's never an obvious, gut-level anthem that jumps out at the listener in the manner of an "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone" or "Words and Guitar," but the intensity simmering under the surface does bubble over often, thanks to the group's greater use of dynamic shifts. There are fewer protest songs this time around, as most of the lyrics explore failed relationships and personal uncertainty, yet it manages to retain the sense of empowering catharsis that makes the group so compelling. The Hot Rock can invite comparisons to a less jam-oriented Television or a minimalist version of indie compatriots Helium (not to mention the obvious Kim Gordon homage on "Get Up"), but in the end, it stands on its own as Sleater-Kinney's most progressive and experimental work, as well as their darkest. No Cities To Love. Purchase and download this album in a wide variety of formats depending on your needs. Buy the album Starting at 12,49€ Delivered after a nine-year hiatus, Sleater-Kinney's eighth album finds the trio more technically proficient but with a revitalized vigor. Delving into post-punk dance beats following a flirtation with classic rock, the band veers closer to their Riot Grrrl roots without sounding childish, churlish or stuck. Forward momentum is the theme, as in how can we all do better, be better ? Edgy opener "Price Tag" laments the heavy costs of fast fashion and other seeming capitalist bargains, while "Fangless" is a pre-#TimesUp strike against idol worship. But there's plenty of fun to be had, especially with the shout-along chorus of the title track and "Hey Darling," which finds Tucker coming on like Chrissie Hynde fronting a super- charged Pretenders. ("Gimme Love," meanwhile, unleashes the full force of her hurricane wail.) And, as always, the band stuns when Tucker and guitarist Carrie Brownstein trade vocals, as on "Bury Our Friends" — an interplay of harmonies circling and chasing each other in a march-worthy rallying cry: "We're wild and weary but we won't give in." © Qobuz..

Art Centre Arteleku, Spain/Austria 2009 P-Rock Paradigms, Queer Hip Hop and Riot Grrrl Whiteness Exploring the intersections of music, gender, and ethnicity in feminist zines by Red Chidgey and Elke Zobl with Haydeé Jiménez Photo by Elke Zobl Ablaze! is a fanzine because we are fanz, fanatics, zealots, extremists, we are wild for stuff we’re wild for and that fact can’t change, except these passions are so real they have sell-by dates, determined by my own chemistry. - Karren Ablaze of UK fanzine Ablaze!, 1993. Zines could almost go by another name: the passion press. Fuelled by love rather than profit, zines are homemade, idiosyncratic, arty journals, which are as eccentric as their makers’ desires. Emerging in the early twentieth century from science fiction writing communities, these periodicals mutated into Xeroxed Football, TV, Rap, and Punk fanzines alongside the rise of everyday office technology and post-war fandoms. Zines are crucial to the development of subcultural identities and political ideologies. Fans themselves become cultural producers through writing, editing, designing, publishing and disseminating their own texts – sometimes alone and sometimes in a group. The spread of desktop publishing and wider zine networking in the late 1980s saw the zine scene explode: from cooking zines to subversive colouring books, survivor rape diaries to thrift store chic, DIY publications sprung up on any topics imaginable. The digital realm inalienably shaped zine culture, but paper zines still exist in their thousands – the in-your-hand nature of zines is hard to beat.

  • Words and Guitar

  • The Albums We're Looking Forward to in 2015
The albums we’re looking forward to in 2015 CHRISTOPHER POLK/GETTY IMAGES Kendrick Lamar. GLOBE STAFF AND CORRESPONDENTS JANUARY 05, 2015 Sneakattack releases might be the new normal for the biggest albums, but here are some major releases already scheduled for the first few months of 2015 — subject to change, naturally. KENDRICK LAMAR Title TBA The Los Angelesbased MC has the daunting task of following up his critically and commercially successful “good kid, m.A.A.d. city,” but if any artist is up to the challenge, it’s Lamar. The mercurial rapper has debuted two songs, the wellreceived, Isley Brothers sampling “i,” and a dazzling, determined untitled track he performed on “The Colbert Report.” Lamar is poised for a banner year; some reports claim his sophomore set could be imminent, possibly with a Beyoncélike stealth launch. (Early 2015) KEN CAPOBIANCO JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE “Absent Fathers” CONTINUE READING BELOW ▼ A bookend to September’s “Single Mothers,” Earle’s latest is the other side of the coin. “Absent Fathers” completes a poignant song cycle about the messy nature of family dynamics. The country singersongwriter knows plenty about the subject matter: His single mother mostly raised him while his father, altcountry renegade Steve Earle, struggled to kick drugs and get his life back on track. (The younger Earle would follow in Dad’s footsteps, too.) “Absent Fathers” was recorded in the same sessions for its predecessor, but Earle felt like he had made two separate albums. (Jan. 13) JAMES REED SLEATERKINNEY “No Cities to Love” Ever since SleaterKinney went quiet in 2006, guitarist Carrie Brownstein’s comedy career has taken off in earnest thanks to “Portlandia.” But anyone counting on “No Cities to Love” to show nine years of accumulated dust hasn’t been paying attention: Brownstein and drummer Janet Weiss blew the doors off in 2011 with Wild Flag, and singer/guitarist Corin Tucker dropped the fiery “Kill My Blues” the next year.

  • Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film
i Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film by Alana Kornelsen A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016 Alana Kornelsen ii Abstract This thesis examines the use of diegetic pre-composed music in three American lesbian feature films. Numerous trends can be noted in the selection of music in lesbian film broadly— music is often selected to draw on insider knowledge of the target audience of these films, creating cachet. This cachet comes with accompanying “affiliating identifications” (Kassabian 2001) that allow music to be used in the films’ construction of characters’ identities. This is evident in the treatment of music in many lesbian films: characters frequently listen to, discuss, and perform music. This thesis focuses specifically on riot grrrl music and the closely linked genre of queercore (which together Halberstam ([2003] 2008) refers to as “riot dyke”) in three films that focus on the lives of young women: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (dir. Maria Maggenti, 1995), All Over Me (dir. Alex Sichel, 1997), and Itty Bitty Titty Committee (dir. Jamie Babbit, 2007). By examining how diegetic riot dyke music is used in these three films to build characters’ identities and contribute to the films’ narratives I argue that in these films, riot dyke music is presented as being central to certain queer identities and communities, and that this music (as well as the community that often accompanies it) is portrayed as instigating or providing opportunities for characters’ personal growth and affirming characters’ identities in adverse environments.
