PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970S
Peace Review 16:4, December (2004), 439-444 The Forgotten Revolution of Female Punk Musicians in the 1970s Helen Reddington Perhaps it was naive of us to expect a revolution from our subculture, but it's rare for a young person to possess knowledge before the fact. The thing about youth subcultures is that regardless how many of their elders claim that the young person's subculture is "just like the hippies" or "just like the mods," to the committed subculturee nothing before could possibly have had the same inten- sity, importance, or all-absorbing life commitment as the subculture they belong to. Punk in the late 1970s captured the essence of unemployed, bored youth; the older generation had no comprehension of our lack of job prospects and lack of hope. We were a restless generation, and the young women among us had been led to believe that a wonderful Land of Equality lay before us (the 1975 Equal Opportunities Act had raised our expectations), only to find that if we did enter the workplace, it was often to a deep-seated resentment that we were taking men's jobs and depriving them of their birthright as the family breadwinner. Few young people were unaware of the angry sound of the Sex Pistols at this time—by 1977, a rash of punk bands was spreading across the U.K., whose aspirations covered every shade of the spectrum, from commercial success to political activism. The sheer volume of bands caused a skills shortage, which led to the cooption of young women as instrumentalists into punk rock bands, even in the absence of playing experience.

The lineup consisted of six all-women punk and new wave bands (the Nixe, the Pin-offs, Pink Plastic & Panties,i the Removers, the Softies and the Broads) playing for a mixed gender audience. Similar to the Ladyfests two decades later, the main goal was to counteract the gender disparity of musical production (Aragon 77; Leonard, Gender 169). The organizers argued that: popular music is a men’s world as most music managers, industry executives and band members are male. Women are mainly relegated to the roles of singer or eye candy. However, women’s emancipation has also affected popular music as demonstrated by an increasing number of all-women bands playing excellent music. To showcase and support such bands we organized the Rock tegen de Rollen festival.

But, they do get made. I am grateful for the support and guidance I have received during this process from Carol Siegel, my chair and friend, who continues to inspire me with her deep sense of humanity, her astute insights into a broad range of academic theory and her relentless commitment through her life and work to making what can only be described as a profoundly positive contribution to the nurturing and nourishing of young talent. I would also like to thank T.V. Reed who, as the Director of American Studies, was instrumental in my ending up in this program in the first place and Kristin Arola who, without hesitation or reservation, kindly agreed to sign on to the committee at T.V.’s request, and who very quickly put me on to a piece of theory that would became one of the analytical cornerstones of this work and my thinking about it.

  • The Melbourne Punk Scene in Australia's Independent Music History
ANZCA09 Communication, Creativity and Global Citizenship. Brisbane, July 2009 The Melbourne Punk Scene in Australia’s Independent Music History Morgan Langdon La Trobe University [email protected] Morgan Langdon completed her Honours in Media Studies at La Trobe University. This paper is an excerpt from her thesis on the history of independent music culture in Melbourne. She plans to begin her PhD in 2010. Abstract The existence of independent music communities and culture within Australia’s major cities today is largely attributed to the introduction of punk in the late 1970s. Among the inner city youth, a tiny subculture emerged around this sprawling, haphazard style of music that was quickly dismissed by the major players in the Australian music industry as bereft of commercial possibilities. Left to its own devices, punk was forced to rely solely on the strength of the independent music network to release some of the most original music of the era and lay the foundations for a celebrated musical culture. This paper examines the factors that contributed to and influenced the early Australian punk scenes, focusing in particular on Melbourne between 1975 and 1981. It shows that the emergence and characteristics of independent music communities within individual cities can be attributed to the existence of certain factors and institutions, both external and internal to the city. Keywords Australian music history, subculture, punk, independent music. Introduction In 1986, the Australian Broadcasting Tribunal published the results of an inquiry into the importance of the broadcasting quota for local music content. Throughout this inquiry, investigations are made into the existence of a distinctly Australian “sound”.

  • Press Release
Press Release Dan Graham Rock ‘n’ Roll 3 October – 3 November 2018 27 Bell Street, London Opening: 2 October, 6 – 8pm For his tenth exhibition with Lisson Gallery, Dan Graham draws on his long-standing history working with music and performance to present a new stage-set design, alongside over-sized models, video and a courtyard pavilion, exploring the relationship between audience and performer. Based in New York, Graham is an icon of Conceptual art, emerging in the 1960s alongside artists such as Dan Flavin, Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt. A hybrid artist, he has been at the forefront of many of the most significant artistic developments of the last half-century, including site-specific sculpture, video and film installation, conceptual and performance art, as well as social and cultural analysis through his extensive writings. Delving into the performative in the early 1970s – exploring shifts in individual and group consciousness, and the limits of public and private space – Graham’s practice evolved into the installations and pavilions for which he is famous internationally. Today, his work continues to evolve with the world around it, taking on a different reading in the age of social media, photography and obsessive self-documentation. A recent work such as Child’s Play (2015-2016), which was on display recently in Museum of Modern Art’s Sculpture Garden, is from a group of works that Graham describes as fun houses for children and photo ops for parents. The artist’s latest presentation of work focuses on the relationship between musical performance and audience. The space at 27 Bell Street will be occupied by a curvilinear stage-set which visitors will be able to walk around.
