The book is organized in 20 chronologically ordered chapters,-mainly centered around various individuals who had some impact On the course of public educationeduction in Arizona. In the 'rst six chapters, much attention is devoted to the activiti e"))s/ of the various territorial governors and legislative assemblies as they affected education between 1854 and 1883. Chapters 7/through 20 mainly focus on one or more of the 24 supprintendents of public instruction between 1883 and 1975. 'The/uthorrelies entirely on the historical narrative technique in discussing the history of the superirttendency until 1958, but he mainly'uses oral history interviews to portray the period from '1958 to 1975. Material for the studywas gleamed from a variety of libraries and archives in Arizona and from personal interviews with living ex-sup-erintendents and their associates. Because of this general lack'of knowledge about the historyof education in Arizona, John Bury agreed to author this study. Whan'you read his material, you will agree that he was admirably qualified, in every way, for this significant and enormous task. rWe have asked that both volumes, be placed in ever, high school and public library in the State as well as in the libraries of the universities andcommunity colleges. C: Okay, I’ll speak up. John: As my children keep saying, dad you should get a hearing aid. I said no I don’t need a hearing aid; I just need for people like you to articulate better and face me when you speak. I was born and raised in Council Grove, Kansas. My parents were. My father was a retail lumberman and he was born in Kansas also. My mother was born...he was born in a little called Colony and mother was born in Emporia which was a fairly good size town. In fact my maternal grandparents were both Welsh immigrants. It’s coming from about the same part Wales and when Betty and I were in that part of the world once upon a time, we rented a car and drove to the town where my grandmother had lived. I was pretty close to her.

This is the Tempe Historical Museum’s renovation interview with James Yeater, former Theater department head at Arizona State University. Let’s begin. Can you tell me please when you first came to ASU, and what made you choose ASU as an employer? JY: I came in 1958. At that time, I had two choices, I guess. One with a college in northern Michigan, almost to Canada, and the other one was Arizona State College. No particular choice too much, but it seemed like climate-wise, this would be a little better choice. It also seemed . In those days, we did not have interviews. You didn’t go to the campus to be interviewed. You were lucky to get a phone call and learn a little bit about it. And the Theater program here seemed rather similar to one I had had as an undergraduate; that is, with about four or five courses, and it was still called Drama then rather than Theater, and with doing plays with the student body as a whole rather than a part of any professionally-developed system. I was familiar with that, so it seemed like a good choice. But I guess, basically, it was sort of an opportunity. INT: Can you tell me just a little bit about what brought you into the drama and theater career path? What initially sparked your interest in it? JY: Actually, I think I started out in other things, but began to—I’m sure this is the common pattern of many—began to work, to be in plays and dramatic presentations and debate and so forth.

DAVIS IN NEW MEXICO AND ARIZONA, 1863-1873 DARLIS A. MILLER THE FRONTIER ARMY PLAYED MULTIPLE ROLES in furthering the development and settlement of the American Southwest. Its pri­ mary task was to subdue hostile Indians, but it also built roads, guarded railroad construction crews, aided destitute farmers, and provided markets for local crops and materials. Such success as the army enjoyed in carrying out these important duties can be attrib­ uted in part to a small group of officers assigned to the inspector general's department. Established in 1813, this department investigated "all matters affecting the efficiency, discipline, and welfare of the Army."1 In post-Civil War years, its typical staff of eight regular inspectors was too small to carry out coast-to-coast inspections, forcing the department to appoint line officers as acting as~istant inspectors whenever the need arose.
