Rhodes 5 COMMUNITYFACTSHEET COMMUNITY PROFILE The Gila River Indian Community is located on 372,000 acres in south-central Arizona, south of Phoenix, Tempe, and Chandler. The reservation was established by an act of Congress in 1859. The Tribal administrative offi ces and departments are located in Sacaton, and serve residents throughout the seven community districts. The Gila River casinos are both owned and managed by the Gila River Indian Com- munity. -

One’s first impression may be of size and distance—broad valleys rimmed by mountain ranges, with a huge sky arching over all. However, a closer look reveals that, beneath the broad brush strokes, this is a land of astonishing variety. For example, it is comprised of several kinds of desert, year-round flowing streams, and sky island mountain ranges. -

Indian Wars in Arizona Territory The stage line brought many more whites through the Pima villages, but the Civil War had an even greater effect. Far from the center stage, the major impact of the war in Arizona slowed the pace of white settlement. When the army abandoned their posts throughout the state in order to send soldiers east, Apaches raids increased. Although Arizona’s contributions to the national conflict were minimal, the Pimas and Maricopas played a key role in the western war. While the Pimas and Maricopas continued to augment their economic alliance with the whites, they also expanded the other valuable service they had provided since the days of the Spaniards— protection from the Apaches. One of the first accounts of an American/Indian military alliance is recounted in the Pima calendar sticks which relate that the Pimas and Maricopas joined with white soldiers in a campaign against the Apaches under White Hat, in 1856 or 1857. As long as whites were just passing through, the protection Gileños (Pimas and Maricopas) provided for their supply trains was sufficient. Pimas and Maricopas fulfilled this need with regular punitive raids against the Apaches several times a year, keeping them away from Pima lands but stopping short of attacking their enemies' mountain rancherías (farm/camps). As the white population increased, so did Apache raids. When gold was discovered in the Weaver and Walker diggings near Prescott, miners flocking to the area found themselves much closer to Apache homelands than was prudent. By the spring of 1863, the Apaches had attacked and murdered several small parties of prospectors and miners. -

Establishment of the Reservation: 1852-1865 Pima-Maricopa Irrigation Project Education Initiative Surveying the Pima 2005-2006 Reservation: 1859 Restoring water to ensure the continuity of the Akimel O’otham and Pee Posh tradition of agriculture Sylvester Mowry did more than distribute the gifts Congress made available to the Pima and Maricopa under the 1859 act. He also supervised the survey of the Pima Part 70 Reservation. While expecting to survey a 240,000 acre reservation, the agent was ordered to limit the reservation to an area “not to exceed the limit specified by Congress,” or 64,000 acres. He had $1,000 at his disposal to conduct “a cheap kind of survey.” When Mowry traveled to the villages to distribute the gifts, engineer Andrew B. Gray accompanied him. Charged with the actual survey of the reservation, Gray was already familiar with the Pima villages from his days as a surveyor with the Mexican Boundary Survey and the Pacific Railroad survey of 1855. How Gray surveyed the reservation reveals much about the perceived threat to the Pima and Maricopa villages in 1859. Gray and Mowry met with Antonio Azul and the village leaders to discuss the survey. As Mowry made clear in his report, the Americans were not particularly concerned with Pima and Maricopa desires. Writing to Greenwood, Mowry noted the difficulty he had explaining to Azul and the headmen the nature and purpose of the survey as the Americans saw it. Azul repeatedly argued the Pima and Maricopa “claimed as their own property the entire Gila valley on both sides,” from the Pinal Mountains east of Florence to the Little Desert near Gila Bend. -

Bringing Digital Papers into the Traditional Museum: Examining the Territorial Governors through the Arizona Digital Newspaper Program By Eden Robins and Christopher Sloan HISTORY As project manager of Arizona’s Digital Newspaper Program, I began work on the idea of creating an interactive digital museum exhibit back in January of 2013. I was very well aware that this was Arizona’s third and final eligible cycle in the LC/NEH National Digital Newspaper Program Grant. We had captured much history and stories from around the state, but I knew many, many more needed to be told. My hope is to prolong the digitization of Arizona newspapers beyond the NDNP grant, but just in case that isn’t possible, I decided that it would be helpful to create some sort of legacy for this project. I came to the conclusion that one way to create interest in and possibly perpetuate this project would be by raising public awareness. I was aware that our Capitol museum had a constant stream of visitors and they were working hard to bring in even more visitors. Luckily, the timing of my thoughts synced well with the goals of those in charge of our Capitol museum. The assistant director, Luke Bate and I met to discuss an interactive display for the museum. His goal was to update the museum experience in general as a draw for more people, exposure and awareness. While some passive exhibits would remain, his goal was to incorporate more interactive experience displays for visitors. Luke pointed out that he had space in their Territorial Governor’s room for an exhibit and it was along the main visitor tour path. -
