FESTIVAL SODOBNE UMETNOSTI ART STAYS JERNEJ FORBICI

Vključuje razstave v praktično vseh ptujskih in okoliških galerijah in razstaviščih. Skupaj smo predstavili preko 100 ustvarjalcev s celega sveta.

Pred vami je katalog letošnje edicije, ki zajema dogajanje in razstave festivala sodobnih čudes. Podoživite neverjeten utrip najstarejšega slovenskega mesta, polnega presenečenj in čudes, ki jih prinaša sodobna umetnost pomešana z zgodovino.

Se vidimo naslednje poletje.

10 WUNDERKAMMER 13 FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART ART STAYS JERNEJ FORBICI

Cabinets of wonders – encyclopaedic collections of curious items that science (supposedly) could not find any explanation for. Sometimes they were called microcosms or theatres of the world, and from the 16th to 18th century one could not have imagined any reputable house without such a cabinet of wonders. Geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious and historical relics, works of art and antiquities – all of these could be found in them. Sometimes the items were originals and sometimes they were fake, the only important thing was that the collection was as diverse and wondrous as possible. They represent the origins of today's museums, and have always been regarded as an important part in encouraging individuals to the collecting of art.

When preparing this year’s festival Art Stays, we have envisioned it similarly: as a journey of two collectors, who have travelled the world in order to find unusual and exotic contemporary works of art. Our two collectors loaded the items they found and brought them to Ptuj in order to fill the town’s old buildings with wonders from all continents. They also meticulously and regularly kept a record of their journey, and their diary with pictures was presented by the award winning Slovenian author Nataša Kramberger.

The programme of the 13th Festival of Contemporary Art ART STAYS is the result of collaboration between several international galleries, museums and curators. It includes exhibitions that occured in virtually all galleries and exhibition rooms in and around Ptuj. An international group of artists was creating also in Ptuj’s ateliers. Every day, the Slovenski trg square was the place for talks with artists and curators in residence, and the venue for several performances and concerts. The City Cinema showed a cycle of artistic films and documentaries. In the morning hours, workshops for children and youth took place, while in the evenings, one even had the opportunity to experience art at unique dinner events. The Mestni trg square hosted the exhibition of the world’s smallest photographs (Blink Circus), and there were musicians performing all over town. This year’s festival hosted more than 100 artists from all over the world.

The 2015 edition catalogue is in front of you, it covers the events and exhibitions of the festival of contemporary curiosities. Relive the beat of the oldest Slovenian town, full of surprises and wonders brought by a mixture of contemporary art and history.

See you next summer!

19 BLACK TABLE PERFORMANCE HANS BECKERS, BELGIUM

In his Black Table performances Hans Beckers uses a machine that amplifies normally inaudible sounds through a magnetic field. He uses found objects, kitchen objects, and utensils as musical instruments. Objects that we all know, but don’t know how they sound. Like for example an electric toothbrush, a massage machine, a mixer, a small fan, a clock, metal sponges, … If a motorized or metal object makes contact with the magnetic field of the coil it gives interference. So each object has a whole range of sounds in order how the object is played and placed in the magnetic field. Hans Beckers shows how objects that are not generally considered fit to play music on can in fact become musical instruments. In a combination of composition and improvisation, a whole range of materials is being tuned and rhythmically, melodically and harmonically played.

20 21 KALEIDOSCOPE BETI BRICELJ,

Kaleidoscope is the unpublished art project of Beti Bricelj, edited by Jernej Forbici. The fragments and the polychromic, symmetrical structures that compose the works of the Slovenian artist, when projected on the façades of houses and on the streets of the city of Ptuj, through their slow kaleidoscopic movement and use of images and colours, narrate a dense network of "stories". It is in allowing ourselves to enter into these compositions that turn, reflect, break into pieces, that new spaces and dynamics are always revealed.

22 23 WUNDERCLASSICS KOR, SLOVENIA

Wunderkammerclassic inspirira tesna povezanost sodobne glasbe in likovne umetnosti.

Wunderkammerclassic stems from the close link between contemporary arts, in this case, music and art. The vocal polyphonic ensemble, Kor, has presented a small selection of songs of the Renaissance in an exceptional location, the Dominican Monastery, confirming the importance of musical culture in everyday life, captivating and amazing the spectator while he slowly "wanders" through the corridors, rooms and courtyard.

24 25 VIDEO PROJECT: TRANSLATIONS II. HONG KONG

Prevodi II. / Translations II.

Translations II. Translating the City aims to explore urban space and place through practice-based research in the medium of video, employing a variety of strategies and interdisciplinary approaches, from mapping and public space performance, to the exploration of spatialized identities, cultural memory, and cultural translation.

The artists invited to take part in this project reconsider the city as a space of negotiation and interchange between agents from different cultures, the scene of an ongoing process of translation. Justin Asco explores the semiotic ‘afterlife’ of a metropolitan structure in terms of the possibilities of urban recoding, while Michael Poetschko and Luis Lara Malvacias engage with the city as a screen for desires and utopias. Wanderlusts takes flight in Damon Ayers & Tessie Word’s mining of their personal digital archives and Arch Dyson’s ludic commentary on the experience of global travel, while Jean Marie Casbarian’s work is a poetic meditation on migration and loss. Isolation embedded in the act of “looking at the city” from the perspective of the other marks Jessica Ledwich’s nocturnal urban landscape and Zoran Poposki’s appropriation of a piece of postmodern auteur cinema; whereas Eva Petrič and Laurence Wood take contemporary urban unrest as a metaphor for a much deeper symbolic struggle.

26 27 WUNDERLUST PAOLA ROSSI & ERIKA VICARI,

Wunderlust.

Wunderlust, Traversal Project's new proposal is linked to the desire to travel through music. It is brought to life by a combination of irony and visionariness, suspended between the voice of a lyric contralto, Paola Rossi, and the sounds of the most curious musical instruments collected from around the world by the musician Erika Vicari, that recreate and interpret in an original way arias of famous operas and melodies of folklore. We are looking at a great and very personal Wunderkammer dedicated entirely to music. A threshold-limen where the subjects, whether performers or spectators, live in a state of ambiguity and therefore, are no longer what they were, but neither what they will be: thus, through a set of signs and behaviour, it establishes a transformation that reinstates the protagonists in the event, often involving them or just surprising them. The essence of the project, consists, in fact, in the decomposition of sound and in its free reconstruction to give vent to creativity.

28 29 WUNDERDINNER I & II MATTHIAS LANGER,

Dogodek so dokumentirale edinstvene hermenevtične fotografije Mahiasa Langerja, zaradi katerih obiskovalec ni več zgolj opazovalec umetniškega dela, temveč njegov protagonist.

Wunderdinner is a unique event of its kind designed to create a work of public art. Conceived to connect art not only to food but also to the participation of a select group of collectors and professional workers in an original seing, the refectory of the Dominican convent in Ptuj, Wunderdinner, devoted entirely to the colour black, becomes a gesture of interaction and sharing but also challenge and provocation. ART STAYS breaks down the barriers that separate the "visitor" who is no longer just a spectator of the works of art, but once inside, becomes part of it, as illustrated by Mahis Langer’s original photographs that require a hermeneutical and creative contribution.

30 31 DIE UNTERWELT NADIA BUYSE, USA

Die Unterwelt. Ameriška glasbenica in multidisciplinarna umetnica Nadia Buyse že drugo leto preseneča Ptuj s projektom Die Unterwelt International Singing Sensation.

American multidisciplinary artist Nadia Buyse for the second time suprises the Ptuj’s public with a new project Die Unterwelt International singing sensations. DUBAIS has decided to end it all and to leave this world. The place in which DUBAIS now exists is neither heaven nor hell; both of those places actually refer to political parties, the Bible was mistranslated. All souls go to one place—Die Unterwelt—a place split in two by ideologies and a wall. Using the city of Berlin as a main backdrop, this multi- media modern day 'pop - opera' investigates conceptions of morality, divisions of power, and the landscapes of political indifference.

32 33 DEEP DOWN ALEKSANDER FENOS, SLOVENIA

Deep down je izviren umetniški projekt Aleksandra Fenosa, povezan z mestom Ptuj in z zgodovino njegovih zaprtih in zapuščenih hiš.

Deep Down is the original artistic project of Aleksander Fenos linked to the town of Ptuj and to the history of closed or uninhabited houses. Starting with the world of fashion, passing on to his passion for graffiti and taoos, the artist’s research, invariably marked by an inexhaustible source of inspiration, continues to formulate the meaning of identity and history. Starting off with colourful pictures, he animates them with black and white signs. It is precisely in the midst of streaks, cracks, rooms, abandoned corridors of the houses that Fenos enters to narrate new or old stories.

34 35 UNEXPECTED TRANSVERSAL PROJECT, ITALY

Unexpected, the second project created by Transversal Project with Cristina Antonini, Ciro Passilongo, Paola Rossi and Erika Vicari, closes the 2015 edition of the Festival ART STAYS.

A tentacled pianist, two acrobatic voices and a hunter of sounds play in the Wunderkammer of a child. His face is the gasp, the instance when life is seen as it is and as it could be. Magical, wonderful and marvelous or deceptive, dark and violent. With the same childhood passion they experiment, start over again, create and recreate sounds, moods and atmospheres. They search between light and darkness, between sweetness and strength, between beauty and pain — two ways of befriending life.

36 37 ART STAYS KINO FISCHLI & WEISS, HR GIGER

V skladu z letošnjo osrednjo festivalsko temo kabineta čudes in velikega umetniškega popotovanja smo za projekcije izbrali tri filme Petra Fischlija in Davida Weissa: The way things go (1987), The right way (1983) in The point of least resistance (1981) ter v Sloveniji prvič predstavljeni film Dark star (1983) HR GIGER-ja.

The appointment of ART STAYS with the film on contemporary art, is reconfirmed for the second year running, in collaboration with CID Ptuj. The aim is to inform the public about contemporary arts through a selection of documentaries and films about the most interesting artists on the international scene. Converging on the theme of the Wunderkammer and the Grand Tour, three historical films by Peter Fischli & David Weiss were chosen: The way things go (1987), The right way (1983) and The point of least resistance (1981), and presented for the first time in Slovenia, the film, Dark Star (1983) by HR GIGER.

38 39 POLETNA AKADEMIJA / SUMMER ACADEMY

V letošnjem letu smo pripravili pet otroških delavnic, povezanih s temo wunderkammer: umetnost in narava, glasba, svetloba, nebo in tisk.

Connecting didactics devoted to contemporary arts to the events of the Festival, the Summer Academy ART STAYS, since 2010 organizes panel discussions, symposiums, lectures, seminars and workshops for adults and children on the practice and theories of the arts, held by qualified teachers, curators and artists coming from the most interesting and important institutions in the world. A network created by Art Stays that is gradually expanding, becoming always more an opportunity for growth, debate and research, in the increasingly enigmatic and broad interdisciplinary and international art scene.

This year, five workshops related to the theme of the Wunderkammer were for children: art and nature, music, light, sky, press. Guided tours and exhibitions, as well as a practical experience in the laboratory as a moment for exploration and reflection on the basic elements of the language of images and sounds and interaction systems, were held in collaboration with CID Ptuj, Transversal project and the Printing House Busato, both of Vicenza (I).

There were six appointments to meet, interview and study in depth with the artists from different

40 countries and with very diverse experiences and research; they ranged from the musician Hans Beckers (B), Nadia Buyse (USA), to the more traditional work related to design and of Walter Trecchi (I) and the photography of Mahias Langer (D), to end with the experiments and multimedia works of the artists Zoran Todorović (SRB) and Adela Jušić (BiH).

A round table, led by Nevenka Dobljekar and aended by artists, photographers, collectors and journalists, that ended thinking about the creation of a Wunderkammer to present the very town of Ptuj, the practices and the state of contemporary art and its promotion and diffusion.

WUNDERKAMMER THE GRAND TOUR

KUSTOSA / CURATORS: Jernej Forbici & Marika Vicari KABINET ČUDES VELIKO POPOTOVANJE MARIKA VICARI

52 WUNDERKAMMER THE GRAND TOUR MARIKA VICARI

The Wunderkammer, with The Grand tour, presents the works of international and interdisciplinary artists, offering an insight not only into the passions and strategies of a collector's research, but also into one of the forms the human mind has concieved to deal with personal differences and the unpredictability of fate.

The format of the project confirms the importance of the role of Art: the search for truth. If a collection strives to reconstruct the world in a room by wielding emotions and creating a distance between us and the objects, the Wunderkammer fixes a time that prompts us to dream. It 's as if we were taken by the hand to be shown all the curiosities that surround us making us relive childhood.

The term wunderkammer is a German word indicating a room or chamber of wonders of the Habsburg period. Ever since the Renaissance, a collection called for a promoter who had in mind two interests; one was to reconstruct the world in a chamber and the other, to identify the world in an object. The symbolic equivalency between a human subject and a material object gave rise to a series of 'tableaux vivants' in the small chambers of the Middle Ages and throughout the Renaissance progressing to the far more famous Wunderkammer of the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.

Our small Wunderkammer, however, is not just a collection or an exhibition, but a means to assert our place in the world. And so here we are, in the clothes of two strange and improbable young collectors, dressed as "masters of the arts", enjoying a year of wandering through the contemporary world of art, revealing how highly the latter is indebted to the Wunderkammer for its distinctive aesthetic inspiration, playing on the past to seek an inner world and a contemporary human model. It is precisely the beauty, the wonder, the alienation, the transcendence of many works of art that has created a collection that does not follow any form of philology that unites past and present or recalls memories. On the contrary, it seeks to intertwine differing intellectual instances, whether related to culture, nature or politics of the time. The bringing together of a varied selection of works by international and contemporary artists has resulted in a project that fascinates and looks with awe at sculptures, prints, books, multiples, drawings and photographs.

When planning the exhibition, the intention was to convey at its best the theme of the Wunderkammer by offering an impressive sample of the most important works our research has produced. In doing so we opted for a rich and varied representation of different languages, combining them into a coherent arrangement.

Modri Nil (Nile Blu) Janet Bellotto črpa navdih iz zlatega razmerja naravnega sveta (nautilus) in nas popelje v notranjost izvirne Noetove barke.

54 Without a doubt, as can be seen from the works of the guest artists, now on display, the research was very well articulated and diversified, so much so as to suggest an approach for classification in presenting it, taking into account the expressive phenomena.

The exhibition, however, took into consideration a method that could be defined analytic since a few key words such as: natural, artificial, wonder, relic, origins, fetish, sound..., can be found in the contents as well as in the exemplifications.

When defining spaces, this approach set down a preliminary trail which was later closely and individually examined. The WUNDERKAMMER - The Grand Tour Exihibition opens with the simultaneous and front view of the work of eight artists: Janet Bellotto, Goran Bertok, Jordi Alcaraz, Matteo Pugliese, Anne & Patrick Poierier, Alex Pinna, Chiara Albertoni e Lello Lopez. The work of Janet Bellotto, The Blue Nile, draws inspiration from the golden ratio of the natural world (nautilus), taking us into an original Noah's Ark. In the first room, we move from Goran Bertok's vivid pictures based on the studies of the human body in a crematory to Jordi Alcaraz's The Bufador, a sculpture of a head locked in a glass case which seems to blow on the outside world to the point of warming the glass and deforming it. It is one of the most enigmatic and interesting showpieces; just like the visual alchemist Berton, Alcaraz works on surprise, contradiction and enigma, playing on the conflict between the inner and outer space.

On the opposite side, we are lead into a section dedicated to nature and memory with Isabelle Menin's hyperrealism photography of flowers, the of the young artist Chiara Albertoni, Lello Lopez's canvas, moving onto Ann & Patrick Poierier's big leaf and the sculpture by Nora De Saint Picman that suggest the permanent frailness of memory compells us to consider contemporary vanity and archaeological collections, both key elements of their research. Finally, we come across Alex Pinna's exhibit, a small and intimate bronze sculpture of man-leaf.

The works presented in the second room conversely introduces the viewer, in keeping with the different perspectives, to a feeling of suspension of time between the narration of one's own personal chamber of wonders, where man rediscovers himself in his search of identity and frailness as conveyed by David Balossi's sculpture, the paintings of Serena Vignolini, the light boxes of Tina Dobrajc and the alluring sound of the organ of the young Italian artist Elisa Strinna. The Seismic symphonies is a singular piece of work for the symbolic change in direction it epitomizes. The instrument that aspires to heaven and usually symbolizes cosmic harmony, airs, instead, our frailness through the sound of the earth: the recording of earthquakes between Italy and Slovenia. If Lello Lopez's second artwork and that of Gianfranco Gentile take us back to mechanics or to colder technical structures, the sculptures of Irwin, Tomaž Plavec and Marek Schovánek and the paintings and collages of Alessandro Filippini, Vincent Solheid and Walter Trecchi, despite using completely different approaches, open the way for research on materials and forms implying that a work of art is never neutral.

55 odpirajo poti k raziskovanju materialov in oblik in nam sporočajo, da umetniško delo ni nikoli nevtralno.

V tretjem prostoru smo še enkrat popeljani v novo dimenzijo odtujenosti. Predstavljeni so: Monika Grycko, Vanni Cuoghi, Iris Van Dongen in Jože Šubic.

56 The third room takes us once again into a new dimension of alienation. Zoran Todorović's video entitled Noise, recorded in three different locations in Belgrade: a central square, a psychiatric hospital and a prison, creates stories and offers to those who are deprived the opportunity to make themselves heard in the world Alessandra Guolla's installation is really a straitjacket designed as a suit of armor for the subconscious. Other works are suspended between mystical symbolism, allegorical figuration and abstraction, respectful of the artists' individuality, all so very different: Monika Grycko, Vanni Cuoghi, Iris Van Dongen and Jože Šubic.

On the second floor, we are taken by surprise by two sculptures that open the trail, one of them, the work of Leo Ferdinand Demetz, emerges from the wall and comes to meet us, the other is Salvatore Zacchino's wandering ant that has set it's sight on a wheat grain.

The works of Ina Loitzl, Erik Lovko and of Jose Molina, in a way, lead us to take an interest in the phenomenology of vision.

The works presented in the first room are all representations of naturalia. They range from the photographs of Roberto Kusterle who is tied to the land, to the drawings and paintings of Andrea Collesano, Simone del Pizzol, Franz Cimitan who depict fish, from the sculptures of Dario Agrimi and Robert Jurak to Viola Pantano's photographs. Next, holding their place, is Serena Piccinini's hippopotamus emerging from a white bowl and Ferdinando Prats' birds of passage represented on large canvas. If Orcioserpente, the work of Perino & Vele, unique in itself, illustrates an outlandish bestiary to indicate the time to reflect, the small black sculptures by Alessandro Filippini remind us of trophies. Next is Peter Wehinger who, by combining bones of dead animals with modeling clay for children, proposes a newly evolved creature suspended between being a living animal of the past and a new figure as a challenge for the future.

Moving on from the first to the second room we come across a Wunderkammer that is intimate and full of identity. It is the work of Penzo + Fiore, a wunderkammer of emotions that is a collection of assorted objects and fragments, accumulated over the years and belonging not only to the private sphere but also for public showing. Still on the theme of intimacy, Hannah Collins' photos ponders on the present and on the survival of memories of places.

The second room takes us into an old early twentieth century living room in the midst of small mice, created in paper mache by Alice Zanin, that wander about among the glassware cabinet, the intimate and analytical pen drawings of Elisa Rossi, collages of old postcards and drawing of Marissa Wedenig, a small selection of calcographic and lithographic engravings of the Italian artists Nicola Samori, Marina Marcolin, Ernesto Treccani and Federico Bonaldi and an ethereal monochrome collection of artificialia of Beatrix Magalapama.

Walking through an old cabinet, among alchemical elements and artificialia, we stumble upon an

Bog s svojo močjo oživljanja in človek s svojo necenzurirano ustvarjalnostjo, med naravnim in umetnim, torej raziskovanje in ustvarjanje umetniškega dela.

58 old African mask, the work of Lamarche-Ovize, a lighted candle in the painting by Matthias Langer, and, on top of the desk, a series of objects reconstructed in latex by Olga Schigal that bring to mind the rooms described by Mary Shelley in her book 'Frankenstein'.

In the third and final room amidst the surrealistic images, characters and landscapes of Christiane Draffehn, lay the oddities of the sculptress Alice Zanin, birds on a wagon among blacks umbrellas, and the black prints of Valeria La Torre. Going along different paths, Adela Jušić and RašaTodosijević, focus our attention on memory and history.

The Wunderkammer collection closes with the imaginative works related to vision and sound of three artists: Aqua Aura's photos, suspended in visible and invisible spaces, between inclusion and illusion; Hans Beckers’s Eggcutterorchestra, that accompanies us in the study of sounds, their character and different tones, and finally Džeko Hodžić's installation expressing the importance and the tradition of speech, even when unsuccessfully stifled by others.

The Exhibition is hosted by the historic Gallery Miheliceva, situated by the river Drava in Ptuj, in the largest of the six towers of the city's defensive walls that date back to the Renaissance. Our Wunderkammer synthesizes the wonders of the universe in order to understand two essential components: Nature and Science. God with his life giving power and man with his uncensored creativity, between what is natural and what is artificial, the mainspring of our research and the creation of artwork.

In 1988, he graduated from the Art School of Bergamo and in 1992 he graduated in painting at the Academy of fine Art of Brera - Milan – with a study and a thesis on “Anselm Kiefer“. Subsequently, he travelled to Iceland in 2006 where he developed his interest of black & white photography. He has continued his formation around the world and developed his research to colour photograpy. The result are forms that become metaphors, fine and soft objects, floating in the void, paradoxically light, as enclosing extraordinary worlds and realities as in the works named Bodies.

He focuses at the pictorial representation of light not as mere reflection over things, but as a self- sufficient atmospheric entity. In his canvases he plays with light, shade and backlighting effects via elaborated technique based on laying oil colors on canvas or board and finishing with bees wax as a veil. As a pictorial oxymoron, his nights possess the intensity of a daylight landscape, immerged only to disappear, dissolved into its own colour and light, which as a shell sorrounds things and blurs them.

An intense travel about humanity, imprisoned, sometimes fierce - but also ironic and irreverent is the focus of wood sculptures by Leo Deme. In his work the tradition blends inextricably to the contemporary with the techniques of carving handed down in his family from generation to generation giving us access to the realm of the transcendent and immaterial.

104 105 FIORELLA FONTANA ITALY rojena 1984 v Caravaggiu (Italija), kjer tudi živi in ustvarja. born in 1984 in Caravaggio (Italy), where she also lives and works.

Interested in the importance of the image she is in the last years developing her own symbolic language, archetypal and primitive. In her works she is joining narrative elements with sign elements that are dematerialized in the white space to tell the metamorphosis of beings half woman and half animal. In her clear and original works she wants to create the duality, however only to point out at the same time and via the use of multitude of signs of materials, paper and graphite that everything is in one.

Ustvarja videe, kipe, instalacije in prostorske instalacije.

Graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1998 with the mentor Prof. Grzegorz Kowaski. She creates video, sculptures, installation and spatial arrangments. Her work is inserted between pop realism and inner iconography and deals with a fear and struggle. Monkey is like an altar dedicated to a peaceful supervisor; oscillating between a human, an animal and a furniture. It could be as well a portrait of a superhuman and tell us that we are living in last days of civilization and its ethical and economic system.

Različni predmeti, fotografije, risbe brez neposredne povezave, a vseeno del istega univerzuma, kot fragmenti skupne zgodbe.

They work with performance, installation, video and photography. Their research focuses on conflicts, on psychological essence of the human being, on the seduction of the weakness. The Emotional Wunderkammer, i.e. room of emotional wonders, is a work that gathers different objects collected through the years and belonging both to the private sphere and the exhibitional one. Objects, photographies, drawings with no direct connection between each other, but each of them composes a universe, and they could all find a univocal collocation just because of being fragments.

The Henan-born artist incorporates these texts into his handmade clothes by careful and meticulous kniing. His dedication is shown as he slices each paper into narrow strips, dampens them and finally roll and twist them into yarn from which he then starts kniing with exquisite control.

RAZSTAVA / EXHIBITION

WUNDERSCULPTOR

KUSTOSA / CURATORS: Jernej Forbici & Marika Vicari WUNDERSCULPTOR MARIKA VICARI

Ko vstopimo v samostanski hodnik, nas pozdravi kompleksna in istočasno lahkotna inštalacija Alice Zanin.

214 WUNDERSCULPTOR MARIKA VICARI

In the exhibition WUNDERSCULPTOR, we look with wonder to the world of sculpture and are intrigued by the works of Leo Ferdinand Demetz, Alice Zanin, Tobia Ravà, Mario Ciaramella, Monika Grycko, Salvatore Zacchino, Nora De Saint Picman, Džeko Hodžić, Robert Jurak, Tanja Špenko and Hans Beckers hosted in the halls and the courtyard of the Old Dominican Monastery in Ptuj, founded in 1230. Monasteries have, historically, always been cultural and scientific centers, so in becoming, in 1924, the historical and archaeological museum of the city, with its small temporary contemporary collection, it affirmed one of its key roles.

The monastery provides the appropriate »frame« for the theme of the exhibition and the selected works. If on the one hand they communicate with the history, the environment, the spirituality and the culture, on the other, they direct us to other alchemical thoughts or ethnographic and anthropological projects.

An important question, that might arise from visiting this exhibition, is the construction of a contemporary Wunderkammer as a collection of the aesthetics of harmony in the relationship between ethos (often giving way to logos and pathos) and form.

On entering the corridors of the monastery, we are greeted by a complex yet lightweight installation of Alice Zanin. A colorful flying animal anchored to a rickety chair suspended from a cluster of small nests, and in the background, beautiful and colourful frescoes representing the split between the bodies of man and animal, in search of the very meaning of the word: grace or damnation, that, whether uttered or received, lives without possessing the gift of accuracy about things. Statute of Nora De Saint Picman, Le Couple, presents two lovers that, passionately and almost erotically expose on the corridor of the monastery. Further they are not turned to each other but audaciously towards outside, there is no hug, just the gentle touch of the bodies. Passion radiates into space. Still reverberating and evoked in the installation of Džeko Hodžić, composed from books and correspondence retrieved from libraries burned down during the war, the word becomes prayer in the sculpture of Mario Ciaramella, or is the unique subject of a long study and interpretation of the letter, number, Kabbalah as in the gematria of Tobia Ravà's sculptures, eg. Shir Tanin, the Crocodile and the installation with the colorful satin sails representing architectural interiors.

If Tanja Špenko's and Hans Beckers' installations already open the way to ethno-anthropological research, Monika Grycko's research, on the other hand, regards more the evolution of animals to humans. The work, The Holy Monkey, outlines contemporary atheism dominated by the

216 indifference of those who succumb to behavioural and genetic mutations rather than to the ruthless laws of nature, far removed from the destiny of man.

The sculptures of Leo Ferdinand Demetz are an open dialogue between man and woman who try to break free despite being anchored to a wooden material, signifying the fine line of a defeated humanity that, nevertheless, tries to rise up, but itself suspended between uncertainty and love.

The collection, closes or reopens, whichever way one wants to see it, in a circular movement. The research on matter and form is related to the concepts of power and action in the external installation of Robert Jurak. It is matter itself (in this case iron) that embodies the possibility and the power to acquire a form already present in realty.

HANS BECKERS BELGIUM rojen 1986, živi in dela v Schotnu v Belgiji. Born in 1986. Lives and work in Shoten, Belgium.

His work is mainly focused on sound, installations, music and performances, but he also makes drawings, etchings and compositions for theatre, video and performances. In his work he tries to find a balance between music and visual arts. Using self-made instruments, he shows how objects that are not generally considered fit to play music on can in fact become musical instruments. His performances are a combination of composition and improvisation, where he plays a whole range of materials rhythmically, melodically and harmonically. Winner of ART STAYS residence prize at 9° edition of Arte Laguna Prize.

226 227 LEO FERDINANDO DEMETZ ITALY rojen 1967. Živi in dela v italijanski Selva Val Gardena. born in 1967. Lives and works in Selva Val Gardena (Italy).

Grzegorzija Kowaskija. Ustvarja videe, kipe, instalacije in prostorske ureditve.

Graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1998 with the mentor Prof. Grzegorz Kowaski. She creates videos, sculptures, installations and spatial arrangments. Her work is situated between pop realism and inner iconography and deals with a fear and struggle. Monkey is like an altar dedicated to a peaceful supervisor; oscillating between a human, an animal and a furniture. It could as well be a portrait of a superhuman, telling us that we are living in the last days of our civilization and its ethical and economic system.

RAZSTAVA / EXHIBITION

WUNDERHERBARIUM

KUSTOSA / CURATORS: Jernej Forbici & Marika Vicari WUNDERHERBARIUM MARIKA VICARI

246 WUNDERHERBARIUM MARIKA VICARI

The wonders and oddities of the natural world are presented in the exhibition at the Magistrat Gallery, under the title of WUNDERHERBARIUM, with fascinating and intriguing photos of Ann & Patrick Poierer, Isabelle Menin, Alessandra Guolla, Aqua Aura, and paintings by Chiara Albertoni.

Although we realize that we are well away from the original herbarium, the artwork chosen offers an original representation of the wonders of nature. There is no doubt a strong connection between the forms of nature and the forms of art. In the aesthetic experience, nature itself becomes art when it arouses an immediate interest and the wonder of seeing and hearing springs from a start of surprise. Nature is interpreted through various reproductive techniques - and in this case we have only chosen painting and photography – as they are not just mere reproductions of reality. The underlying subjectivity is not able to define the pleasure that leaves us spellbound.

The nature represented here appears before our eyes as a true spectacle: from the leaves of Ann & Patrick Poierer to the flowers Isabelle Menin and Aqua Aura, and then through the enchanting forest of the Chiara Albertoni to the extremes of seams and cuts of Alessandra Guolla. From all the selected works, although very different from each other, emerges an elusive language, that remains uncertain, consisting sometimes of small traces that point to something secret, or to a relationship with a plant element, so far more intimate and deep as to provide shelter. And so, whether it is the artist who creates works representing or transforming nature, the collector or the viewer, while lost in contemplation, they are all filled with wonder.

If collecting serves to rebuild the world in a room, to handle emotions and create a distance between us and the objects, the wunderherbarium, located in Slovenia's the oldest town, Ptuj, fixes time, makes us dream and takes us by the hand in this case to introduce us to many curiosities of the natural world.

252 253 AQUA AURA ITALY rojen 1969 v kraju Vimercate, trenutno živi in dela v Milanu. born in 1969 in Vimercate - MI. Currently, he lives and works in Milan.

Subsequently, he travelled to Iceland in 2006 where he developed his interest of black & white photography. He has continued his formation around the world and opened his research to the colour photograpy. The result are forms that become metaphores, fine and soft objects, floating in the void, paradoxically light, as enclosing extraordinary worlds and realities as in the works named Bodies.

256 257 ISABELLE MENIN BELGIUM rojena 1961 v Bruslju, kjer tudi živi in dela. born in Brussels in 1961, where she also lives and works.

RELIQUIAE

KUSTOS / CURATOR: Claudio Composti VIDETI NEVIDENO RELIKVIJA CLAUDIO COMPOSTI

264 SEEING THE UNSEEABLE RELIQUIAE CLAUDIO COMPOSTI

The Wunder-kammer (litterally the Cabinets of wonder) has its roots in the Middle Ages, but became a phenomenon typical of the sixteenth century. It continued throughout the seventeenth and lasted until the eighteenth century, strengthened by the scientific curiosity of the Age of Enlightenment .

It could be said that the Wunderkammer was the beginning of the concept of ‘museum’ although it did not have the characteristics of the later, more methodical organizational set up. Infact, the Wunderkammer was a room often fitted with open wooden shelves on which items were casually set out: glass jars containing parts of the human body immersed in a liquid which was supposed to preserve foetuses (Michelangelo Galliani) and animals with deformities (Caterina Silenzi), as well as rocks and rare stones.

Possessing items that filled people with awe encouraged the growth and spread of collections, a phenomenon already known in ancient times. Not taking into consideration the preciousness and the political and symbolic value of sacred artifacts or relics, fetish love or merely political needs impelled emperors and monarchs to look for these objects, the possession of which was a weapon of power, sometimes going as far as having the absurd idea that owning these objects allegedly gave them innumerous powers, just think of the archaeological expeditions sent by Hitler to Asian lands in search of the spear of Longinus which had pierced Christ’s side. Think also of the proto Christian emperors who sent to look for and – amazingly – found the remains of saints or crosses belonging to Christ himself (Benedetta Bonichi, Giovanni Gaggia, Eva Gerd).

But these were not the only objects worthy of making a fine show in a Wunderkammer: there were others, such as books and rare prints, collections of dried leaves (Antonio Redaelli), pictures (Karin Andersen) cameos, watermarks, pearl necklaces, coral, vases, archaeological findings (Alessia De Montis), ancient coins, all items that boosted a trade aimed at meeting the needs of collectors with money often being made from forgeries.

There were also items that very nature provided which were called by the Latin term, naturalia; things that were in themselves extraordinary for their shape or size, for example, twins with a body part in common, animals with two heads, rare or unknown fish or plants, (Roberto Kusterle, Antonella Aprile).

Other, equally coveted objects, were those created by human hands and known as artificialia, perculiar for their originality and uniqueness and created using secret or complicated techniques from all over the world (Alessandro Brighetti, Beatrice Pasquali).

266 All these findings were named mirabilia, that is, things that spark wonder.

To have a Wunderkammer worthy of being shown was not very common: it was generally the prerogative of kings and nobles, of retired scientists (often alchemists), of rich and learned men and of convents and monasteries. The latter, since their beginnings, were not only places intended to accommodate religious orders, but to be also the sole custodians of culture.

The aim of the exhibition in Ptuj, on the occasion of the 13th Art Stays Festival, aims to propose a contemporary vision of mirabilia created by 12 artists. Very diverse media has been used, but all are united by a single purpose: to investigate the world through the lens of Art.

Starting from the Archaeological section, there are two works of great beauty and mystery: Michelangelo Galliani presents three beautiful marbled heads in vitro, immersed in a liquid preservative. The artifacts were discovered off the coast of Africa, at a depth of 2,000 meters.Experts date the remains to around 10,000 BC, which coincides with the geographical timeline and position of Atlantis. The three faces were found near a submerged square stone, buried under the sand of the seabed and are undeniably man-made. They are presumed to be the foundations of a private house on the legendary sunken island, belonging perhaps to the 3 faces found.

A little farther on, as one browses among drawings and objects, one comes across two parts of a fossilized apple exhibited by Alessia De Montis: unearthed attached to each other on the hill of Golgotha outside Jerusalem and thought to be the remains of the Apple belonging to Adam and Eve. Tradition has it that Golgotha is the place where Adam was buried. Other scholars argue, however, that the apple is the one found by the archaeologist Schliemann, who in 1873 discovered the treasure of Priam and the city of Troy. In return for Helen’s love, the apple given by Paris to Aphrodite as the most beautiful goddess, was the source of discord between the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite herself. This consequently gave rise to the Trojan War.

Remaining in the field of archaeology, another striking piece is Benedetta Bonichi’s canvas cloth with the imprint of a X-rayed crucified body bringing to mind the Sacred Shroud. Discovered during the excavations at Qumran, a place on the west shore of the Dead Sea, not far from the ruins of Jericho (the modern day West Bank), the canvas was found rolled up in the same cave where the apocryphal gospels, the so-called ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’ were discovered. Two mysteries still remain unsolved: the uncertain date of origin of the canvas - estimated between 150 BC and 70 A.D. - and how could it have been X-rayed in a desert land at such a time when there were no advanced civilizations.

Moving along to the relics section, there are two important mirabilia to be seen: the first one belongs to Giovanni Gaggia, who exhibits a mummified heart and 5 drawings with the heart

268 impressed on it. On the drawing paper, alongside the heart, is the outline of a butterfly which according to legend is a symbol of the soul and of a certain monk. In fact, the heart and the drawings were found preserved in the crypt of a small church in Mezzanotte, in the Marche region, where it is said that the saintly monk was revered for his ability to heal the sick and that after each miracle, he would be surrounded by a flight of white butterflies. When he died the monks found in their small chapel, the drawings of the butterflies and over them appeared the print of a heart, the very heart of the Saint on a bed of butterflies.

Another beautiful and strange relic is Michelangelo Galliani’s sculpture. It is of three concentric iron boxes that rotate on a pivot, one inside the other, each with a hole on one side. Only when they are turned so that the three holes are aligned, does the inner box, covered in gold, reveal a fossilized white heart. It was discovered in a Jesuit monastery near Reggio Emilia, but its origin is unknown even to the monks who possessed it as it was donated to the monastery by a wealthy landowner. Apparently, whoever turns the boxes, finds the perfect alignment and looks at the heart, is said to be filled by a wave of joy, and those who do not know how to love, are warmed by it.

A really curious rarity among the relics, is Karin Andersen’s board, painted by a 16th century Flemish artist known as "the painter of the Dragon", because of the theme he portrayed. The figures in the icon of St. George and the Dragon are in fact reversed; it is the dragon that, surprisingly, crushes St. George, breaking his spear and overpowering him. The table, which belongs to the Abbey of Bruges, is believed to have been part of an altarpiece, which dates back to the iconography of the Protestant Reformation at variance with the Roman Catholic Church.

To complete the tableau, Eva Gerd accompanies the icon with the bones of the alleged Dragon, draped in an ornate cloth, embroidered by Flemish women, as a sign of devotion to the Protestant cause and donated to the Abbey.

Appropriate to the artificialia section is Alessandro Brighetti‘s art piece: an artificial heart covered with liquid iron. It was found in the 18th century in an Austrian doctor’s laboratory, an alchemist who disappeared suddenly without a trace. The heart was found, together with a book of drawings and formulas, on the table of the anatomical theatre where the doctor conducted autopsies, sometimes, it seems, secretly. The book and the drawings were lost in a fire at the end of 19th century. It is impossible to say what the doctor was trying to do. Only the heart immersed in a solution of liquid iron that reacts to a magnet remained. The book was perhaps the notes of an attempted heart transplant (the first experiment took place in the early 20th century on two dogs, while it was first carried out on a human being in 1967). Who knows? Alchemy, after all has always attracted scholars and doctors in their search for the secret to life, the philosopher's stone. Between science and science-fiction, esotericism and mysticism, the desire to seek the transformation of Man, in a symbolic and physical sense, sinks into the mists of time.

Eksponati Antonelle Aprile in Alessandra Redaellija so izraz genetike v botaniki. Herbarij in številne risbe neznanih rastlin so našli v knjižnici Univerze v Pragi in domnevno izvirajo iz

270 Between licit and illicit, moral and immoral, science and sorcery, the boundary is often so fine that it is easily crossed going as far as transgressing the laws of nature and daring to substitute God in creation by manipulating genetics, as narrated in literature in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. It is the scientist’s aspiration to defeat death in order to create a new Being.

Still in the artificialia section, on this same theme, Beatrice Pasquali exhibits small ampoules from which either small humans or parts of the body emerge, as well as anatomical tables that come from the laboratory of another mid-19th century Swiss physician and alchemist. The tables and the physician’s experiments seem to be studies of protogenesis (the term gene was not coined until 1906), an intuition the physician had in the wake of Darwin’s theories and had started to experiment in his laboratory pursuing his dream to reproduce organs in series for transplants. Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, became the first man to study hereditary traits in mathematical terms bringing the rigour of science to genetics.

Another decidedly captivating exhibit in the artificialia section is Irofumi Isoya’s piece of art. Interested in investigating the world and the intricate relationship between cause and effect, Irofumi bought in Colorado Springs (USA) a very intriguing relic that presumably came from the studio of the famous electrical engineer Nikola Tesla. He had dismantled his studio piece by piece selling the various parts to pay off his debt with the financier JP Morgan. A scientist and a controversial figure known for his revolutionary work and numerous contributions in the field of electromagnetism (of which he was a brilliant pioneer), Tesla had designed, between the 19th and early 20th century, this lamp as a generator of natural light. He had the intuition to use the bioluminescence (now studied by scientists of nanotechnology) produced naturally by green asianfireflies. Light is emitted through a chemical reaction between the enzymes luciferin and luciferase. When the two enzymes interact, the energy generated is transferred to the nanorods creating a light within the organism. The particular nanorods used in the experiments can at present only be found in the laboratory of Syracuse University. Further research is now underway to convert chemical energy more effectively into light. Experts do not exclude that this could in the future be applied to LED technology, and help achieve luminous devices able of working without the need of connecting to a power outlet.

Of a strange nature, between artificialia and naturalia, are Caterina Silenzi’s anthropomorphic beings. Discovered in the Sibillini Mountains, part of the Umbria-Marche Apennines, a place full of mystery and legends, it is said that the cave located on Mount Sibilla housed a fairy kingdom, in which wonderful creatures lived in a kind of perpetual feast, only to be transformed, for one day a week, in horrific and revolting monsters, traces of which Caterina displays here. Being an inaccessible spot it was the perfect hiding place for pagans fleeing the Christian persecution, keeping alive pagan rituals and legends; these remnants of mysterious origin come from there.

Related to genetics, but applied to botany, are the beautiful exhibits of Antonella Aprile and

272 Alessandro Redaelli. The herbarium and various drawings of unknown plants were found in the library of the University of Prague, and are presumed to originate from the circle of the Bolognese naturalist Aldrovandi (16th century). However, because of the quality of the farseeing designs and plants, other scholars sustain that they could be a series of pages that have vanished from the so-called Voynich manuscript. In 1912 the antique book dealer Wilfrid M. Voynich bought a number of medieval manuscripts from an unknown location in Europe. Amongst these, there was a parchment scroll of 234 pages with a code written in an unknown language. The manuscript, richly illustrated with pictures of plants and other objects seemed to be a medieval scientific study, but the obscure language of the text made it a real mystery. Voynich took the manuscript to America with the aim of having it deciphered, but without results, so it is still one of the most elusive mysteries of the cryptography world. The manuscript was accompanied by a letter dated 1666 written in Latin by Johannes Marcus Marci of Kronland, who had been rector of the University of Prague and addressed to the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher in Rome, asking him if he could translate the work, informing him that it had been bought by the Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612) for six hundred gold ducats. As yet no one has cracked the code despite the carbon-14 dating that certifies the authenticity of the manuscripts, thus excluding the possibility of a fake or a prank, as the sequence and repetition of certain signs assert that there is a meaning behind the mysterious codes.

And astonishingly too, at the beginning of the 20th century Voynich himself purchased the only existing photographic documentation of the first experiments in plant grafting and plant genetics carried out on a human being, presented here by Roberto Kusterle. The origin of the photos is also unknown and no other samples have ever been found nor any further details about these experiments discovered.

If the Wunderkammer in Ptuj is authentic, like its creators, it opens the door to a “different” field of knowledge, akin to the geniuses that can see the unseeable.

WUNDERSKY

KUSTOS / CURATOR: Jernej Forbici & Marika Vicari WUNDERSKY FERTILE ICARUS MARIKA VICARI

WUNDERSKY je naslov majhne samostojne razstave italijanskega umetnika Maria Ciaramelle, posvečene dvema čudežnima stvaritvama - nebu in zemlji. Materialna grandioznost graciozne inštalacije in skrbno izbran prostor postavitve, terasa starodavnega ptujskega gradu, ki bdi nad mestom, ustvarjata vtis osuplosti, moči, kreposti in lepote.

304 WUNDERSKY FERTILE ICARUS MARIKA VICARI

WUNDERSKY is the theme of a small solo exhibition of the Italian artist Mario Ciaramella, two collections dedicated to heaven and earth, the wonders of creation. Here, the material grandeur of the graceful installation and the space, the terrace of the historic castle overlooking the town of Ptuj, create astonishment, power, virtue and beauty. The aesthetic perception of the sky coincides with the idea of the immensity of the feathers and the wonder in the viewer as he moves along the surrounding space covered with red seeds made of glossy terracoa, one of the materials, par excellence, studied and reinterpreted by the artist.

The artist writes, "The whole concept was born from the action of sowing and its connection with the deep and unrelenting human need for freedom and dreams. A pile of red seeds scaered on the ground, while four giant feathers of different colours emerge from the ground and spread out in the sun. Earth and sky: the deep, ideal line that binds together maer, human drive and spiritual ritual ".

The person contemplating the work of art will not see the shapes or colours of the feathers or seeds as seen by the artist, he may not even share the emotions of a sentimental collector or scholar, but fantasy, emotions and imagination will meet in the perfect balance of the wonders of the earth and sky.

305 MARIO CIARAMELLA ITALY rojen 1956. Živi in dela v Luzzano di Moiano (Italija). born in 1956. Lives and works in Luzzano of Moiano (Italy).

WUNDERDOC

KUSTOS / CURATOR: Jernej Forbici & Marika Vicari WUNDERDOC MARIKA VICARI

310 WUNDERDOC MARIKA VICARI

Wunderdoc is a personal and original exhibition prepared by the German photographer Mahias Langer to complete his artistic stay in Ptuj. The title refers to the concept of document intended as a fixed element, in this case in the form of pictures rather than word, that are able to arouse interest in the eyes of the observer.

Langer's photographs are original and unique analogue documents, whether conscious or unconscious, because, if on the one hand they "record" while finding out information about unique events, in this case the Wunderdinner, on the other, they acquire the significance of a genuine testimonial. The concept is very simple. It is a maer of openning the shuer of the camera on the event one wishes to record and closing it once the last person has left the scene. Consequently, the story of several individuals is compressed over a long period of time in just one shot. The result is a faded and blurred portrait, but precise and aentive to every single and most imperceptible movement to create an original album of memories. To give an analytical and semiotic reading, it can be said that Langer's photos consist of maer such as people and objects and incidentals such as colour, tactile texture and visible form. The deviation produced in his work by breaking the immobility of artistic practice and the dual reference to vision (the observed object and the observer) allow the viewer to experience, through the power of vision, the original and fragmented sense of reality, the truth of permanence and therefore the link with time, space and human existence itself. Consequently, Langer develops the aesthetic potential of the eye, of vision through the camera, making a significant contribution to the creation of a new form of perception that is both objective and personal.

BLINK CIRCUS ITALY

The smallest circus in the world houses, inside a large carillon, mechanical wheels, a giant book, vertical trunks and a small gallery. This provocative installation and the touring show surprise the collector who seeks to bring to light a lost reality, that of the beginnings of modernity. The artist, Lorenzo Mastroianni, has worked with commitment for years on photography and on fragments, collecting them, sorting them out following a certain logic and inviting the viewer to enter and participate in the show by clutching a magnifying glass or special lamps to discover the miniature world, querying it and so becoming a keen interpreter.
