Mungbean Research

Special Report 18.4 1972 University of Missouri Agricultural Experment Station PREFACE

The preparation of this bibliography h as been funded from a U .S. Agency for International Development Grant to the Department of Agronomy of the University of M issouri, Columbia. The grant w as for institutional development, in this case the development of a training program for Agronomy graduate students in Pl ant Breeding and International Agriculture. Graduate students involved in t his program are permitted to conduct part of their thesis research in India or Thailand. The mungbean, radiata (L.) Wilczek, was chosen as a crop for study in order t o provide thesis problems re levant to the country in which the student would be working. The mungbea n is a widely grown food in the Middle East, Pakistan, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Peru, and other areas. It provides an important sou rce of protein for many people in these areas for whom animal protein is unavailable, prohibited by cost, or not eaten due to dietary habits. It is utilized by cooking as a grain legume, in various processed forms, or as sprouts. Agronomic and genetic research on this has been sporadic and scattered. We are listing the literature references that we have found pertaining to this crop. These references have been assem bled from many so urces, including the Field Crop Abstracts, Pl ant Breeding Abstracts, and Experiment Station Record. Insofar as possible they have been confirmed by checking against the original article. When the latter w as unavailable we accepted the listing as given in the abstracting journal. It is inevitable that some inaccuracies and om issions will occur. We hope you will call them to our attention.
