Objects like tribal dresses, headgears, weapons, musical instruments and other ethno-cultural materials housed in museums are prized possession of intellectual and cultural property of people. Tropical countries like India have a favorable climatic condition for the biological agents of biodeterioration. Organic materials such as leather and parchment objects form substantial part of collections in museums across the world which are promptly infested by insects like dermestid beetles, tenebrionides, silver fishes, cockroaches and other micro-organisms. From the last two to three decades the environmental problems are increases due to the over use of pesticides or other non-decomposing chemicals as well as products. Synthetic products and pesticides are very expensive and also highly toxic for humans and its environment. In order to overcome the above problems, there is urgent need to develop safe, convenient, environmentally friendly and low-cost alternatives. The aim of present study is to evaluate toxicity of nutmeg oil through contact and stomach mechanism against the larvae of Anthrenus verbasci under laboratory conditions (25±29 ºC and 60±68% RH). The mortality data thus obtained in both cases of mechanisms were first subjected to profit analysis using SPSS software and then later the transformed data were used for drawing regression lines graphs between probit mortality and concentration to determine LC 90 values in each cases of test.

INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species.

    PESTS OF STORED PRODUCTS A ‘pest of stored products’ can refer to any organism that infests and damages stored food, books and documents, fabrics, leather, carpets, and any other dried or preserved item that is not used shortly after it is delivered to a location, or moved regularly. Technically, these pests can include microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria, arthropods such as insects and mites, and vertebrates such as rodents and birds. Stored product pests are responsible for the loss of millions of dollars every year in contaminated products, as well as destruction of important documents and heritage artifacts in homes, offices and museums. Many of these pests are brought indoors in items that were infested when purchased. Others originate indoors when susceptible items are stored under poor storage conditions, or when stray individual pests gain access to them. Storage pests often go unnoticed because they infest items that are not regularly used and they may be very small in size. Infestations are noticed when the pests emerge from storage, to disperse or sometimes as a result of crowding or after having exhausted a particular food source, and search for new sources of food and harborage. Unexplained occurrences of minute moths and beetles flying in large numbers near stored items, or crawling over countertops, walls and ceilings, powdery residues below and surrounding stored items, and stale odors in pantries and closets can all indicate a possible storage pest infestation. Infestations in stored whole grains or beans can also be detected when these are soaked in water, and hollowed out seeds rise to the surface, along with the adult stages of the pests, and other debris.

These beetles cause serious economic loss of legume commodities both in fields and every year. Pulses constitute the main source of protein for developing countries like India where per capita consumption of animal protein is very low. Due to their high protein quantity and quality, legumes are considered as “poor man‟s meat”. A large number of non-native pulse beetles have crossed geographical boundaries and becoming cosmopolitan in distribution, thus posing major pest problem worldwide. A kidney bean pest, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) native to Central and Southern America has recently infested stored kidney beans in the Indian subcontinent. The present investigations determined life cycle, behaviour, facundity, pest status, host range and developmental compatibility on diffent legumes and different cultivars of kidney beans. Acetone and alcoholic extracts of some botanicals have been tested and proved effective to suppress facundity, egg hatch and adult longivity of the pest population under laboratory conditions. The new species is similar to the extant Holarctic M. emarginatum (Duftschmid), 1825, and fossil M. sucinoemarginatum (Kuśka), 1992, but differs in its shorter abdominal ventrite 1 (about 0.43 length of ventrite 2) and larger body (5.1 mm). The trap can be used under shelves and against walls. As a shelf mount, the trap is in close proximity to the food packages and may capture emerging insects before they mate. The trap can also be used as a hanging trap similar to the Pherocon II. When used as a shelf or wall mount, it was as effective as the Pherocon II, but when used as a hanging trap significantly fewer insects were captured. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. Introduction Monitoring of pest populations is essential for a successful integrated pest management program (IPM). The development of synthetic insect pheromones and food attractants has given the food industry a highly effective tool for early detection of insect infestation. The use of pheromone-baited traps to monitor insect populations offers several advantages over visual inspections. Traps work 24 h a day and 7 days a week. Maintenance of traps is simple and requires regular inspections to record the numbers and species of insects caught, to clean traps and replace lures. Tolerances for insects established by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for processed foods are low and the FDA now encourages the use of insect traps in pest management programs (Mueller, 1998).

Interrelation of mating, flight, and fecundity in navel orangeworm females Abstract The an vel orangeworm, Amyelois transitella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae, Phycitini), is an economically important pest of nut crops in California, USA. Improved management will require better understanding of insect dispersal, particularly relative to when mating occurs. A previous study demonstrated a more robust laboratory flight capacity compared to other orchard moth pests, but it was unclear how mating affects dispersal, and how dispersal affects fecundity. In this study, 1‐ and 2‐day‐old females were allowed to fly overnight on a flight mill either before or after mating, respectively, and were then allowed to oviposit.

Khalil2 1 Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Assiut University, 71526 Assiut, Egypt 2 Plant Protection Research Institute Agricultural Research Center, Dokki, Giza, Egypt Abstract The different immature stages of the almond moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) were exposed to low temperature of -5ºC for different exposure times. Exposure of eggs to 240 to 360 minutes is sufficient to achieve 100% mortality for this stage. Exposed early larval instar to -5ºC for 180 minutes is sufficient to achieve 100% mortality. Exposure of the late larval instars to 300 and/or 360 minutes is effective to achieve a complete mortality for the late larval instars of the pest. The calculated LT50 and LT95 were 113.73 and 208.64 minutes. Exposure of pupae to 300 minutes or more is effective to get a complete mortality for the pupal stage. High temperatures of 45º, 50º, 55º and 60ºC were tested against egg, late larval instars and pupal stages of E. cautella. Mortality tended to be increased with the increasing of temperature and exposure time. Exposure time for more than one hour at 45ºC, 15 minutes at 50ºC and 10 minutes at 55ºC were more effective and led to more than 95% mortality for the egg stage of E. cautella. Exposure of the late larval instars for more than 97.22, 72.17, 17.65 minutes at 45, 50 and 55ºC is sufficient to achieve more than 95% mortality for the late larval instars as indicated by LT values.
