Dear Friends,

“We ourselves feel what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop.” - Mother Teresa

In the past year, the face of our heroes and essential workers has transformed into a teacher, a student, a nurse, and a bus driver. rough so much uncertainty, it became clear that it is our schools that provide so much more for our commu- nity than simply an education. Our small, Catholic school by the ocean, became essential to promoting community resilience and rebuilding our emotional, social, and spiritual health in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. LBCRS continues to weather the storm of uncertainty by providing families a stable, safe and equitable in-person learn- ing environment. Our dedicated teachers (heroes) have worked tirelessly to provide LBCRS students with an engaging, rigorous education. By encouraging dialogue and a culture of understanding and compassion, we foster the desire to build strong hearts and minds. As a result, we are reminded of the vital role our annual Crystal Ball fundraiser plays in ensuring the survival and success of our school. In addition, the Crystal Ball allows us the opportunity to acknowledge exemplary individuals whose love and service require our recognition and gratitude. Although we were unable to cele- brate in person, the Long Beach Catholic School family wishes to congratulate and honor our 43rd Annual Crystal Ball award recipients for their admirable dedication and loyalty. We observe your heroic individual and collective contribu- tions to our community and our school.

is has been such a transformative time for our community, and it seemed only tting to present Rev. Monsignor Donald McE. Beckmann with the Mother Seton Award. is award reects our appreciation of his dedicated years of service and spiritual guidance. He is truly a blessing and a gi to our community, and we hope this award will provide fond memories of his time shared with our Long Beach Catholic family.

Kelly and Steve Fontana were chosen as the recipients of the Saint John Newmann Award. e foundation of our Catholic school’s success is built upon their commitment to and love for LBCRS. ey are a per- fect team and permanent, valued and essential members of our Long Beach Catholic School and community.

We are thrilled to honor Debbie Gentilesco Mantia with the Distinguished Alumni Award for the thousands of little things she does every day that supply big hope, provide encouragement, and support to our beach community. Debbie is the consummate LBCRS alum and embodies our school’s values and hopes for our students. We are so proud of her personal and professional achievements.

Roisin Donohoe and Collette Kavanagh are the well-deserved recipients of the Community Service Award. LBCRS’ mission is to build strong minds and hearts while providing an excellent faith-based education. What better way to demonstrate the power of this mission, than to point to the collective e orts they provide to our LBCRS students and families with their time, coaching, enthusiasm, and continued service. Our school is indebted to and blessed to have these incredible women as members of our Long Beach Catholic community.

We would like to express our gratitude to the LBCRS School Board and Crystal Ball Committee for dedicating their time and exhausting every e ort to ensure our deserving honorees are recognized and celebrated. A special thank you to Jenni Weston, Jamie and Robin Lynch, Michael and Diana Bolz, Karen , and Kerry Ryan Troy for their individual contributions and support.

Our school family will always be our greatest asset at LBCRS. Please know that you are all important members of our LBCRS family, and your contributions and support will remain an essential part of our continued success and lasting faith. Each member of our family provides a small drop that eventually becomes a deep, wide, powerful ocean of love and resiliency. ank you for all you do.

Mrs. Kahn, LBCRS Principal

We thank you for all of your support and wish you all the best! Rev. Msgr. Donald McE. Beckmann, Pastor Recipient of the 2020 Mother Seton Award

e Mother Seton Award is named after Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to teaching. is award is presented to exemplary individuals whose support and service impacts Catholic education and the well-being of our nation’s youth. is year’s well-deserving recipient of the Mother Seton Award is Rev. Msgr. Donald McElligott Beckmann, Pastor. Raised on Long Island’s North Shore (“where our beach gave us rocks in our shoes as opposed to the barrier beach’s sand!”), Donald McE. Beckmann received a graduate degree in theology from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and a Doctorate in Ministry from our diocesan seminary in Huntington. He was ordained a presbyter of the Diocese of Rockville Centre in 1970. After serving parishes in Rockville Centre and Huntington, he was appointed spiritual director of St. Pius X reparatory Seminary. He later became the Catholic Chaplain at Hofstra University and Diocesan Director of Campus Ministry. During the Hofstra years, he also served the summer mission in Davis Park on Fire Island (“It was tough work, but somebody had to do it!”). During his university tenure, he was appointed Diocesan Director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, a position he still holds. In that role, he served on the national Orthodox Christian – Roman Catholic dialogue, the national Muslim – Catholic dialogue, and the national Orthodox Jewish – Catholic dialogue. Msgr. Beckmann was ecumenical representative from the Catholic Church in the United States to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America for eight years (“My father’s Lutheran family was delighted with that appointment.”). His most memorable work was his involvement in the peace process in Northern Ireland in the 80s and 90s (“My mother’s family in the County Kerry was proud, if a bit bemused, that their cousin was ‘involved with those people in the North.’”). He continues to represent our diocese on the Board of Governors of the Long Island Council of Churches. In recogni- tion of his ecumenical and interfaith work, he was named an Honorary Prelate by Pope John Paul II. For six years, he has been our pastor of Saint Ignatius Martyr (“a parish I have come to love like none other”). Long Beach Catholic Regional School is proud to honor Rev. Msgr. Donald McElligott Beckmann as the recipient of the 2020 Mother Seton Award. Roisin Donohoe & Collette Kavanagh Recipients of the 2020 Community Service Award

e Community Service Award is presented for outstanding and continuing commitment to a broad range of affairs affecting the community and the brotherhood of man. Dedication and volunteer support to concerns of education, government, health, and human rights are all prerequisites for this honor.

is year’s well-deserving recipients of the Community Service Award are Mrs. Roisin Donohoe and Mrs. Collette Kavanagh.

Roisin Ann Donohoe was born in 1974 in County Armagh, Ireland, and is the eldest daughter of Eugene and Jacinta Campbell. She attended St. Catherine’s primary and secondary school along with her siblings, Orla, Helen, and Eugene. After graduating from St. Catherine’s secondary school, Roisin continued her education at Queens Col- lege in Belfast, where she graduated with a BSC in Architectural Engineering in 1995.

at summer, Roisin and three of her friends traveled to and eventually ended up in Long Beach. She started waitressing at Lucky’s Luncheonette in the West End where she first met Eamon, the love of her life. In 1998, after three years of dating, Roisin and Eamon got married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh. ey returned to Long Beach and settled in the West End. Not long after, they became partners in e Saloon. Roisin currently manages at e Saloon, where she has met many wonderful people from the community and forged many friendships. Roisin and Eamon have 3 beautiful children Aoife, , and Orla, all of whom were all fortunate enough to attend and gradu- ate from Long Beach Catholic Regional School.

Collette Kavanagh grew up in Derry, Ireland but has called Long Beach her home for years. Since 2009, Collette Kavanagh has been sharing her love of running with the children of LBCRS. Coach Collette, as she is affectionately known by her student athletes, has led the LBCRS Cross Country Team to multiple championship seasons. She lives in Long Beach with her husband P.J. and their four daughters, Ellie ’14, Anna ’15, Sarah ’19, and the youngest, Lily ’24. Collette is extremely grateful for the education and support her daughters received at LBCRS.

Roisin and Collette would like to thank their friends and family for their endless love and support. In addition, they want to congratulate all the honorees for their inspiration and continued support of LBCRS. Long Beach Catholic will always be near and dear to their hearts.

Long Beach Catholic Regional School is proud to honor Mrs. Roisin Donohoe and Mrs. Collette Kavanagh as the recipients of the 2020 Community Service Award. Steve & Kelly Fontana Recipients of the 2020 Saint John Neumann Award

e Saint John Neumann Award is presented for outstanding dedication to Catholic education and doctrine and for generous support of Catholic institutions. e recipient is committed to keeping Catholic Education alive by mirroring the image of Saint John Neumann, first male United States Citizen canonized as Bishop.

is year’s well-deserving recipients of the Saint John Neumann Award are Stephen and Kelly Fontana. e Fontana family can best be described as a team since they have continually supported Catholic education and the community’s children and families. ey always say “yes” when approached to lend a hand, and they often volunteer before being asked, mostly anonymously and always graciously.

Since 1952, the Fontanas have been a part of our community when Steve’s parents and grandparents were summer residents of Long Beach. Kelly and Steve were married in 1988, and, although they lived in Man- hattan, they summered in Atlantic Beach for the next few years. ey made the move from the city to East Atlantic Beach in 1993, where they have since been full time residents.

e Fontanas joined the LBCRS community in 1994 when their eldest, Sean (’04), started Pre-K followed shortly by Stephen (’06), Craig (’08), and finally Kelsea (’10). Kelly often volunteered at the school in many capacities, which enabled her to meet so many fantastic people with whom she maintains lasting friendships. She was a class parent for 14 years, a lunch parent for about the same, and ran the supermarket program along with Steve. She was also Vice President of the Parents’ Club for a few years and became a Substitute Teacher; once her children graduated, she worked as the Principal’s Assistant for nine years. Steve’s work schedule not only gave him the opportunity to see his family more, it allowed him to also be involved with the LBCRS community. He served on the LBCRS School Board, later becoming the President of the Board and ultimately serving for nine years. During that time, Steve also headed the Finance and Technology Committees, spearheaded the Solar Panel program, started the Supermarket Voucher Program, started the Men’s Basketball League, and ran the LBCRS Casino Nights. He too made lifelong friends along the way.

Kelly retired in 2018, and she and Steve earned their boating Captain’s licenses; they have been traveling together since! In keeping with their selfless sense of giving and nurturing, they have recently taken on their latest adventure of helping raise their granddaughter, Rayne.

Living by the motto, “your character is your destiny,” the Fontanas opened their home and their hearts to the LBCRS community and dedicated themselves to shared success and happiness reinforced by their Catholic faith.

Long Beach Catholic Regional School is proud to honor Stephen and Kelly Fontana as the recipients of the 2020 Saint John Neumann Award. Debbie Gentilesco Mantia Recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award

e Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes an LBCRS alumnus who has made a significant impact in our community, and who embodies our school’s spirit, core values, and mission.

A life-long Long Beach resident, Miss Debbie, as she is so lovingly called by the children in her care, is the perfect choice for the Distinguished Graduate Award.

Debbie began her educational journey at Long Beach Catholic School, followed by high school years at Kel- lenberg Memorial and Long Beach High School, receiving a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education from SUNY at New Paltz and finishing with a master’s degree from Touro College. Debbie taught in the Board of Education system and 13 years ago opened Seaside Celebrations Children’s Enter- tainment Center in the West End of our beloved city.

It is well-known that Seaside Celebrations is an extremely valuable resource for the parent, providing dai- ly, holiday and occasional evening activities for children. In addition, Debbie is also a vital member of the community and the parish of St. Ignatius. Each year, as Long Beach welcomes families of Waterfront Warriors, Debbie generously offers her time and energy to collect necessary ‘items’ (clothing, food) for their use. During the weeks leading up to Christmas, she becomes a driving force in collecting toys, gifts, and gift cards to be distributed to families in need. And, for the past 20 years, she has been an active participant for the Michelle O’Neil Foundation raising money for children with cancer. ere seems to be no end to her desire to help others.

Debbie has been married to Phil for over 20 years, their 16-year-old son, Luke is in his junior year at LB High School. ey are both immensely proud of her and support her in all her charitable activities. She is truly a loving, generous, and compassionate person, and LBCRS is proud to call her one of their own.

Long Beach Catholic Regional School is proud to honor Mrs. Debbie Gentilesco Mantia as the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award.
