  • 1 European Ethno-Nationalist and White Supremacy Groups Key
European Ethno-Nationalist and White Supremacy Groups Key Findings • European far-right ethno-nationalist groups have cast immigrants as a scapegoat for economic hardship faced by young Europeans. Rather than promote overt white supremacy, these groups denigrate minorities—particularly Muslim immigrants—as detrimental to European culture. • Far-right political parties like Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland and Italy’s Lega Nord have been able to generate substantial popular support by promising to defend their respective countries against the cultural attacks of immigrants and foreign influences, and have consequently made gains in domestic parliamentary elections. • Groups like Les Identitaires and its youth wing, Generation Identity, have renounced violence in favor of utilizing social media and public demonstrations to portray themselves as legitimate, mainstream movements protecting European culture. These groups have directly targeted Europe’s youth through social media and public demonstrations. • Groups including Combat 18 and the Nordic Resistance Movement, which openly embrace neo-Nazi ideology and violent tactics, are still able to recruit for violent activities, despite the rise of non-violent, populist groups. Executive Summary More than 70 years after the defeat of Nazi Germany, ethno-nationalist and white supremacist movements in Europe continue to thrive. They include far-right political parties, neo-Nazi movements, and apolitical protest groups. Some groups openly espouse violent white supremacy, while others have

  • Mother Teresa the Final Verdict by Aroup Chatterjee INTRODUCTION
Mother Teresa The Final Verdict By Aroup Chatterjee INTRODUCTION Mother Teresa once made me cry. The year was 1988 - I was on one of my frequent holidays or visits to Calcutta from Britain, where I had moved to in 1985. I was standing by the kerb-side in Gariahat Morr, munching on a famous 'mutton roll'. I was looking at scenes I had grown up with - pavements almost obliterated by s hops, people having to weave their way through hawkers peddling their fares; bus es tilted to one side by the sheer weight of passengers and belching out black d iesel smoke, trams waiting for a manual change of tracks before they could turn, the familiar neon sign of an astrologer. In the midst of all this I remembered the 'Calcutta' of the West - Calcutta the metaphor, not the city. In my three years in the West I had come to realise that the city had become synonymous with the worst of human suffering and degradatio n in the eyes of the world. I read and heard again and again that Calcutta conta ined an endless number of 'sewers and gutters' where an endless number of dead a nd dying people lay - but not for long - as 'roving angels' in the shape of the followers of a certain nun would come along looking for them. Then they would wh isk them away in their smart ambulances. As in my twenty-seven years in Calcutta I had never seen such a scene, (and neither have I met a Calcuttan who has), it hurt me deeply that such a wrong stereotype had become permanently ingrained in world psyche.

A NEW CALL FOR REFORM: SEX ABUSE AND THE FOREIGN SOVEREIGN IMMUNITIES ACT INTRODUCTION n 2002, the Catholic Church became embroiled in what has been I called “a crisis without precedent in our times.”1 That year, more than 3,300 allegations of sexual abuse by clergy members surfaced in the United States.2 At the time, that figure brought the total number of al- leged victims since 1950 to 11,750 and contributed to an estimated $840 million dollars spent by the Catholic Church in legal settlements and “other costs related to sex abuse.”3 For the most part, however, the Holy See has been insulated from the wave of litigation resulting from these astounding statistics as it has rarely been named a co-defendant in U.S. lawsuits.4 On June 7, 2006, the U.S. District Court of Oregon (“Oregon District Court”) rendered an unusual decision in the matter of Doe v.

ISSN: 2473-7275 ©JOURNAL OF ICON STUDIES 1 Kirstin Noreen Salus populi: Icons and the Protection of the People Abstract With the outbreak of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Pope Francis prayed before an icon of the Virgin and Child in Santa Maria Maggiore and a crucifix in San Marcello, two images asso- ciated with miraculous healing and intercessory power. He subsequently had the icon and crucifix moved to St. Peter’s where they flanked the pope as he offered a special Urbi et Orbi blessing on March 27, 2020. To contextualize Francis’s use of an icon during the coronavirus outbreak, this article will trace the role of cult images in Rome during occurrences of disease and will briefly discuss the specific importance of the Santa Maria Maggiore icon for the early Jesuit order. Keywords: Rome, Icon, Gregory, Plague, Salus Populi Romani, Jesuits, Pope Francis On Sunday, March 15, 2020, Pope Francis defied the imposed coronavirus lockdown in Italy and left the Vatican to make a private visit to two holy images in Rome: an icon of the Virgin and Child in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore and a large wooden crucifix in the church of San Marcello (fig.

  • Face to Face With... John Allen!
New York Cultural Center Face to Face with... John Allen! A Dialogue with Journalist John L. ALLEN, Jr., Senior Vatican Analyst for CNN and National Catholic Reporter, Senior Correspondent Monday, June 18th, 2007 at 7:00PM Milbank Chapel, Teachers College Columbia University 525 West 120th Street, New York *transcript not reviewed by the author Simmonds: Good evening, and welcome on behalf of Crossroads New York Cultural Center and the Columbia Catholic Ministry. Before I let Msgr. Albacete introduce tonight's discussion with our distinguished guest, I would like to make just one simple comment about why we are truly delighted to meet and dialogue with John Allen. The reason is simple: we think that John is one of the most important journalists in the US today who specializes in covering the life of the Catholic Church. And why is that? The principal reason, in our view, is not his extensive network of contacts, or the quality of his reporting and writing skills, and so on. In our opinion, the primary reason why John has shined in the firmament of Catholic journalism over the last few years is much more basic. As soon as he started writing from Rome for the National Catholic Reporter in 2000, it became obvious to everybody that here was somebody dedicated to reporting what is happening in the Church, offering both a wealth of information and a balanced judgment. If that sounds banal to you, perhaps you have not noticed that over the last 40 or 50 years, roughly since the time of the Council, the professional vocation of many of John's colleagues has not been primarily to describe what the Church IS, but rather what the Church SHOULD BE.
