Subjects were 70 homeschooling parents and 20 nonhomeschooling parents who completeda questionnaire assessing parents' educational and child-rearing values and practices, and family members' social relationships outside the home. Homeschoolers were divided into groups according toreasons they gave for homeschooling: either academic reasons or reasons related to beliefs. Findings indicated that homeschooling parents had more hands-on involvement in their child's education. Home environments of academically motivated homeschoolers were more stimulating than those of homeschoolers motivated by beliefs or those of children in public schools. Academically motivated homeschooling parents expected earlier maturity and independence from children than did parents in the other groups. Homeschoolers restricted children's television viewing more than non-homeschoolers. Homeschoolers motivated by beliefs were more authoritarian and involved in church activities than parents in the other groups. It is estimated that 43% of all chil- dren and as many as 86% of children with developmental delays experience some type of sleep difficulty. Sleep problems Bedtime Mcan make infants and young children moody, short tempered and unable to engage well in interactions with others. Sleep problems can also impact learning. When a young child is sleeping, her body is busy developing new and brain cells needed for her physical, mental and emotional development. Parents also need to feel rested in order to be nurturing and responsive to their growing and active young children. Here are a few proven tips for making Naptime bedtimes and naptimes easier for parents and children. Establish Good Tip: Sleep Habits Develop a regular time for going to bed and taking naps, and a regular time to wake up. Young children require about 10-12 hours of sleep a day (see the box on the last page that provides information on how much sleep a child needs). Sleep can be any combination of naps and night time sleep. Make sure your child has outside time and physical activity daily, but not within the hour before naptime or bedtime. Give your child your undivided and unrushed attention as you prepare her for bedtime or a nap. This will help to calm her and let her know how important this time is for you and her. Develop a bedtime and naptime routine.

    The Bedtime Pass1 Child Development & Rehabilitation Center Oregon Health & Science University Purpose: The Bedtime Pass is used with young children (ages 3 to 10) who have a difficult time going to bed on their own. It’s best used with children who do the following things after being put to bed: call out to parents (e.g., “Mom, I love you.” “Can you come back in?”), cry or yell, or actually leave the room. This treatment is not likely to work well with younger or older children. Also, it may not be best for children who have lots of behavior problems at times other than bedtime. For these children, other things are probably needed first, before working on bedtime. Steps: Using the Bedtime Pass is a multi-step process. Follow the guidelines below: 1) Sometime before bedtime on the night that you are to start the program, sit down with your child and explain the procedures. These are the important points to cover: a. Explain that your child is having some difficulty going to sleep on his or her own and that you have come up with an idea of how to help. (e.g., “I know that it’s hard for you to go to bed on your own. So, I’ve made up an idea that may help you.”). b. Explain the strategy. Say something like, “You and I are going to make a pass for you to use each and every night. You will get one pass per night. Stick to the same bedtime and wake time every day, even on weekends. Children sleep better when they have the same bedtime and wake time every day. Staying up late during the weekend and then trying to catch up on sleep by sleeping in can throw off a child’s sleep schedule for several days. 2. Beds are for sleeping. Try to use your bed only for sleeping. Lying on a bed and doing other activities (e.g., watching TV, using a tablet or computer) makes it hard for your brain to associate your bed with sleep. 3. A comfy, cozy room. A child’s bedroom environment should be cool, quiet, and comfortable. 4. Alarm clocks are for waking up. Children who tend to stare at the clock, waiting and hoping to fall asleep should have the clock turned away from them. 5. Bedtime routine. A predictable series of events should lead up to bedtime. This can include brushing teeth, putting on pajamas, and reading a story from a book. 6. Quiet, calm, and relaxing activities. Before bedtime is a great time to relax by listening to soft, calming music or reading a story. Avoid activities that are excessively stimulating right before bedtime. This includes screen time like watching television, using a tablet or com- puter, and playing video games, as well as physical exercise.

She had a court hearing that day to determine custody arrangements for her three- year-old daughter Geneva whom Lydia had not seen in over a year. She thought we were there to take her to court and was deeply disappointed when she found that was not true. (We were there for a totally different reason which is not relevant to this story.) Geneva was being cared for by an acquaintance of Lydia’s. This acquaintance refused to relinquish custody of Geneva so that mother and daughter could be reunited at a community mother-infant facility. For the next year- and-a-half, Lydia fought for custody of her daughter. Her insistence on protecting her own rights and those of her daughter’s paid off and Lydia and Geneva were eventually reunited. We have met hundreds of women and men in prison who have been just as dedicated as Lydia, who have truly fought for the “best interests of the child.” For your determination, for your perseverance, but most of all for your love of your children, we dedicate this manual to all of you.
