Activities will include learning coaching skills and gain- ing coaching qualifications as well as vital life skills with members of the RGC staff. Gerry O’ Sullivan, manager of the Get Started programme in Wales, said: “Get Started with Rugby gives young unemployed people a fantastic opportunity to get into the world of work. The programme is informative, action packed and increases motiva- tion and confidence and is also a lot of fun. Teamwork is essential in rugby and a key part of the course is learning to build relation- ships with others and to work as part of a team.” The Prince’s Trust helps change young lives. Here is the match report from their outstanding 26-15 win. The wind was a huge factor in the match between RGC and Williams guides Llandrillo through Cheshire at Colwyn Bay RFC. With kicking for territory a disadvantage, both sides came out with intent to play the ball and keep possession. The opening few minutes was played around the Cheshire 22, but with their first concerted attack of the match, Cheshire built up a head of steam and scored a scrappy try in the corner. The conversion went wildly wide of the posts and from the restart, RGC piled on more pressure. Scrums and lineouts were an issue throughout, as the larger Cheshire pack bullied RGC, but on 18 minutes, Nathan Jones (Ruthin) found himself in acres of space and scored by the posts, giving Armani Roberts (Wrexham) an easy kick for the extras. Cheshire fronted up from the restart but RGC built up some aggressive counter-attacking and tackling and forced play back down the other end. On the stroke of 30 minutes, Armani Roberts broke through the Cheshire lines and ran in under the posts, con- verting his own effort to open up a 14-5 lead. Lineouts and scrums cost RGC and 5 minutes later, Cheshire crashed through for their second try in the corner. Again the conversion kick went wild, but the gap was down to 14-10 as the ref blew for half time. Changes made, RGC started the second half brightly, though the scrum still struggled against the bigger Cheshire boys. Even so, it was Rhys Tudor (Llandudno) who finished an outstanding backs move on 52 minutes with another try, which Josh Morris (Denbigh) had no problem adding the conversion. A scrappy passage of play, with scrums all over the pitch, resulted in a smash-through 60th minute try for Cheshire, but the kick for the extras went wide yet again. With the score at 21-15, it looked as though Cheshire had the commitment and the reserves to steal the game, but as the time ran down, RGC counter-attacked down the right wing. The Chesh- ire centre took the ball into contact, but it was Josh Jones (Gw- ernyfed) who emerged in space on the wing and ran in to score an excellent try in the far corner. Morris’s conversion attempt was carried wide by the wind, but that was to be the last kick of the game, RGC running out with a deserved 26-15 victory. DID YOU KNOW THAT • Bangor were among the 11 clubs who attended the founding meeting of the Welsh Rugby Union at the Castle Hotel, Neath in 1881. • Godfrey Darbishire, of Bangor RFC, became the first North Walian to be capped by Wales when he played on the pack in Wales’s first international against England at Blackheath on February 19th, 1881. • There was a North Walian in the first Wales team to win an international match. Hugh Vincent was born in Caernarfon and learned his rugby at Friars School, Bangor. He played for Bangor and won his only cap against Ireland in Dublin on 28 January, 1882. A student at Trinity College, Dublin, he played in the pack. • The first Welsh player to score a try against England was Charles Peter Allen, from Beaumaris. He crossed the English line in the 1884 defeat in Leeds. The Oxford University threeequarter was making his debut in the game and later went on to become the Liberal MP for Stroud. • Charles Taylor, who was born in Ruabon, also made his debut in the Wales threequarter line in the game against England at Leeds in 1884. He was playing for Blackheath at the time and went on to win nine caps. • The North Wales Rugby Union was formed in January, 1931. Nine clubs formed the body and they were granted membership of the WRU in June that year. By 1934 the body had grown from nine to 12 clubs. • In 1932, ND Guest, of Llandudno, became the first player from North Wales to receive a Welsh Trial in the 20th century.

The Welsh Rugby Union Limited Annual Report 2012 Adroddiad Blynyddol 2012 Undeb Rygbi Cymru Cyf Song at the Year’s Turning After R.S. Thomas The Millennium Stadium Cardiff, Midnight, New Year’s Eve 2011/2012 The firework’s cannon-echo fades, the rocket’s falling star decays as first with seconds, then minutes the year begins to carve its ways. The pitch grass is pale and short, dew-damp underfoot, the blades coaxed by low-suspended lamps further from their roots. Everything is to come, the stadium a vessel, the quiet a settled dust, a stillness anticipating the violence of a match day’s lust. The stands of seats are a crucible of voices, everything still to say, a hundred exit men between them, running their lives away. The soundscape of a cave, dripping in the night. Or a winter wood where every creak and sigh suggests the ear of tooth or blood. A single bird takes flight across the opened roof as if lifting from a bough, its feathers lit, as bright as a sub breaking from touch like the breaking of a vow. A blessing? Perhaps. For seasons and matches also have their grace, not only turning but returning too, beginning at the same beginning place. We are grown from memory but alive only now, our past breaths upon the wind. Whatever has been done, though there, is gone; whoever sinned, whoever won, is recalled and forgotten here, where glory, bruise and blame will all be washed away by now. The new grass shall purge us in its flame.
