COMING HOME: CHARLES DALE Wednesday, December 21, BBC One Wales, 8.30pm

In the last of the series actor Charles Dale, who plays Big Mac in Casualty and starred in several seasons of BBC Cymru Wales drama Belonging, returns to his Tenby roots to discover the truth about his ancestors, and learn why his grandfather was such a buttoned-up Victorian.

Dale travels to Llanstadwell in Penbrokeshire to meet genealogist Michael Churchill Jones and to see the final resting place of some of his ancestors, who he learns, far from being the farmers he expected, included men of some repute.

As an actor he says the “dark side” he feels the Dales have is useful to draw on - but with a great- grandfather and great-great grandfather who were what we’d now term “love rats” it’s up to grandfather Eric, whose Home Guard activities attracted the right kind of attention, to rescue the family’s reputation.

BBC Cymru Wales Sport offers rugby fans a Christmas treat with three live Pro 12 rugby games over the festive season.

All the top regional rugby action kicks off with live coverage of the Blues v Dragons game from the Cardiff City Stadium on Friday, December 23, in Y Clwb Rygbi: Gleision v Dreigiau on BBC Wales on S4C from 7.15pm. Live coverage is introduced by Gareth Roberts with special guests former Cardiff and Wales players Gwyn Jones and Gareth Davies. Commentary is from Huw Llywelyn Davies and Derwyn Jones.

There’s a Christmas cracker of a game lined-up for Monday, December 26, with live coverage of the Boxing Day local derby between the Scarlets and Ospreys and a chance to find out who’s the best of the west. Live coverage is presented by Ross Harries in Scrum V Live: Scarlets v Ospreys on BBC Two Wales from 1.45pm. Ross is joined in the studio by regular Scrum V pundit Tom Shanklin and commentary is from Jonathan Davies and Gareth Charles. Viewers can press the Red Button while the game is in play for Welsh language commentary and Rick O'Shea's Red Zone.

Then on Friday, December 30, there’s the second Welsh derby of the week when the Dragons welcome the Scarlets to Rodney Parade as both teams look to break into the top half of the Pro 12 table in their final game of the calendar year.

Ross Harries is joined by Ian Gough in the studio with live coverage in Scrum V Live: Dragons v Scarlets on BBC Two Wales from 7pm. Commentary is from Jonathan Davies, with analysis from Phil Davies and Tom Shanklin on the touchline. Welsh language commentary and Rick O'Shea’s Red Zone is on the red button.

Directly following all the top rugby action from Rodney Parade there’s another chance to catch up with the highs and lows of the past Welsh sporting year in the Welsh Sports Review 2011 from 9pm.

WELSH ARTS REVIEW OF THE YEAR Boxing Day, December 26, BBC Two Wales, 9pm

2011 has been an exciting year in the arts in Wales, and Nicola Heywood Thomas and her special guests are all set to remind viewers of some of the finest moments in Welsh Arts Review of the Year.

Silver screen star Michael Sheen relives his experience of performing The Passion of Port Talbot, a massive three-day undertaking for National Theatre Wales, DJ Bethan Elfyn gives her verdict on the Welsh music scene in 2011 and Only Men Aloud musical director Tim Rhys-Evans takes a look back at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World 2011.

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre open their doors to reflect on significant architectural redevelopment in 2011 and the programme takes another look at this year’s film releases shot in Wales, and joins the Dylan Thomas Award ceremony with judge Rachel Trezise sharing her memories of scooping the top spot at the inaugural prize in 2006.

BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales celebrate Christmas in style, as they present a concert packed full of seasonal favourites for all the family.

Join in the festive spirit with a selection of Christmas music, including the magic of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, the excitement of Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride and beautiful Christmas music from John Rutter. There’s also a chance for the whole family to join in with a medley of Christmas songs, conducted by Grant Llewellyn.

Following concerts in Cardiff and Swansea, the last stop of the Orchestra’s three-night tour will be at Sir Thomas Picton School, in Haverfordwest, where the Orchestra will be joined by members of the Pembrokeshire Youth Choir.

CHRISTMAS ON BBC RADIO CYMRU

BBC Radio Cymru promises to be aglow with festivities as fascinating stories, fantastic music and a good dollop of Christmas cheer is brought to the listeners by some of the station’s best loved presenters.

And good music is aplenty as Lisa Gwilym presents a live session by Creision Hud on Thursday December 22.

On Christmas Eve there is a feast of song as Dafydd and Caryl present Noson y Sêr (8pm), a concert of musical theatre songs recorded at Pontyberem Hall with Shân Cothi, John Owen Jones, Aled Pedrick, Cath Ayres and Côr y Drindod Choir. Following this, Dolig Huw Stephens (9.30pm) sees the man himself bringing a specially-recorded music session with Gruff Rhys, Jen Jeniro and Al Lewis. Huw will also be chatting to a few members of the audience who’ve had a pretty good year in 2011 including Dafydd James, Rhys Iorwerth and Miss Wales - Sara Manchip.

On Christmas Day, Nia Roberts (from 6am) comes to the rescue with tips on turning last-minute culinary catastrophes into tasty triumphs with chefs Rhodri Edwards and Bryn Williams. Dafydd a Caryl (8am) to follow brings a lively programme of music and Christmas greetings from listeners all over the world.

It will be a white Christmas whatever the weather in Nadolig Gwyn, as Gwyn Hughes Jones welcomes Julian Lewis Jones, Angharad Mair and Robin McBryde as his special guests.

No Christmas is complete without a panto and this year Radio Cymru presents a specially written pantomime by old song-writing buddies Caryl Parry Jones and Hywel Gwynfryn. Wei Hei Blod a Lleu! (11am) presents some of Radio Cymru’s most familiar voices, as you’ve never heard them before!

Gair yn Gnawd at midday is a recording of the modern-day oratorio which has been thrilling audiences all over Wales while Geraint Lovgreen ac Enw’r Gan (2pm) traces the history of our traditional Christmas songs.

On Boxing Day, Rhodri Ogwen Williams (8.30am) chats to celebrities and well-known personalities including poet Geraint Lloyd Owen, Linda Healy and Meri Huws whilst Lisa Gwilym (8pm) presents a session from north Wales’ own three wise men, Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog.

On the surface, you could say life has been easy for Sioned Rees. She’s the apple of her parents’, Eileen and Denzil’s, eyes in Pobol y Cwm. But the fact she’s always had her own way makes her needy, and woe betide anyone who stands between her and her ambitions in life, as her family is about to find out.

Since taking over the family shop, Sioned has set her heart on modernising the business, without paying much attention to the cost, until now. With Probert pressurising her to pay up for the building work and without the cash to settle the bills, she needs a little bit of financial help.

And the answer to her strife is right under her nose - Anti Marian. Sioned continues to manipulate her aunt in order to save the shop. What Sioned is looking for is Power of Attorney over Marian, so she can control the situation and have her own way once more.

But does Sioned really understand the serious implications of her actions? Emily Tucker, who plays Sioned, is convinced that she doesn’t.

“She doesn’t really think about what she’s doing to Anti Marian with her deceit and lies. She may be aware that what she’s doing is wrong but she doesn’t think about the consequences.

“She’s so committed to making Macs happy after all he’s been through, she’s willing to do anything to get what she’s never had - happy families.”

Emily believes that Sioned’s upbringing is at the root of the problem. “Life has been hard for Sioned since the start. Her parents lost her twin as a baby and, thankful that she’s still with them, they’ve spoilt her rotten.”

The actress from Pontarddulais, near Swansea continues, “It’s as if she enjoys creating trouble. That’s her way of getting attention because often, when she tries to do something right, her family don’t react. She acts badly so that they take notice of her.”

If anything, Sioned and Anti Marian’s relationship has been very strong recently and that makes the conspiracy and its effect on Marian’s health, even more cruel. With Sioned stage-managing from the sidelines, Marian’s confusion increases, and she pulls out of the Christmas service, which is a great disappointment to her. How long can this go on before something major happens?

Time will tell what long term effects Sioned’s actions will have. But one thing’s for certain - Marian needs to be wary of her niece and pray that Sioned will see sense before it’s too late.

Ac a fydd Denzil yn fodlon rhoi un cynnig arall i Nansi?

z A familiar face returns to Cwmderi as Dai comes home to Bryntirion, after his spell working for Dic Deryn in Ireland. Diane is overjoyed to have him back but he’s not so keen to discover that nearly half the women of the village are taking refuge under his roof! With a little explanation about what happened to Brandi, Dai suggests it’s time to say goodbye to the dog, which also gives him the chance to say goodbye to Brandon.

In the middle of all the festivities, Siôn brings the community together for some carol singing. But the Christmas spirit isn’t extended to Garry, and in spite of the children’s affection for their uncle, he’s not welcome to join Britt in the celebrations.

And will Denzil finally find some happiness with Nansi?

zWith the turkeys in the oven, a power cut just before lunchtime causes chaos in Cwmderi. Thank goodness for the Deri’s gas oven, as Ed and the family prepare to welcome everyone to celebrate together at the local pub.

Denzil’s suspicions are confirmed when he realises how ill Marian has become and insists that his aunt move in with him immediately.
