Cultural Programme Danish Summer Language Course 2017

Week 32

Monday August 7 th

Afternoon off

Tuesday August 8 th – Christiansborg and the King’s Garden

After lunch, we will go to Centre, and start the afternoon with a visit at . Here, we will see the Royal Reception Rooms including the Great Hall with the tapestries. The visit will also include a guided tour in the Royal Reception Rooms. Afterwards, the group will go to the tower of Christiansborg Palace to get a view of Copenhagen from above the roofs. After our visit at Christiansborg Palace, we will go on a walking tour which will lead us past , and down to Amaliehaven from where we will have a view of the Operahouse at the other side of the harbour. In the opposite direction, you can look up through the courtyard of Palace to the Frederiks Church, also known as the Marble Church. We will walk this way, through the courtyard of Amalienborg Palace to the church. We will end the afternoon on the lawn in the King’s Garden with a game of “Kubb”, in Danish more commonly referred to as “Kongespil” (“King’s game”) or “Vikingespil” (“Viking’s game”).

Wednesday August 9th – Lecture on Danish/Nordic languages, Danish cinema/media, or Danish literature

Lecture at the held by a lecturer from the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics.

Thursday August 10 th – Hamlet at Castle

After an afternoon off we meet at the Copenhagen Central Station at 17.50. From here, we take the train to Elsinore and walk to Kronborg Castle. Here we will watch the play Hamlet at HamletScenen – Shakespeare at Hamlet’s Castle. After the play, we take the train back to Copenhagen.

Friday August 11 th

Week 33

Monday August 14 th – Lecture on Danish/Nordic languages, Danish cinema/media, or Danish literature

Lecture at the University of Copenhagen held by a lecturer from the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics.

Tuesday August 15 th – The Ny Glyptotek

After Lunch we will visit the . Glyptoteket is founded by brewing magnate . His passion for collecting art lives on through the exhibitions in the beautiful buildings, where they can be enjoyed by the public. The Glyptotek focuses on the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean as well as Danish and French art from the 19 th century.

Wednesday August 16 th – National Museum of

After lunch the plan for the afternoon is an excursion to the National Museum of Denmark. The National Museum is the largest cultural and historical museum in Denmark. Here, you can see exhibits from all over the world. At the National Museum, you can explore various eras of the history of Denmark – from ancient times onwards.

Thursday August 17 th – Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Thursday’s programme starts after lunch, where we will visit Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, situated in Humlebæk, north of Copenhagen. Apart from the permanent collection at Louisiana, the museum offers changing Exhibitions. Thus, at the time of our visit, we will be able to experience the exhibition “The Academy of Tal R” with works by the Danish contemporary artist, Tal R, and the exhibition “The Cleaner” which tells a story of the performance artist Marina Abramović and her work for the past 50 years.

Week 34

Monday August 21 st – The Karen Blixen Museum

Monday’s outing takes us north of Copenhagen to the Karen Blixen Museum at , which is sited on the opposite side of the road from the beautiful Rungsted marina. Rungstedlund was the childhood home of the internationally recognised author, and this was also where she settled down when she returned to Denmark after her years in Africa. The museum tells the story of Karen Blixen and her authorship, and offers the visitor a glimpse into the author’s everyday life at Rungstedlund. Behind the museum, there is a garden and a grove, where you can enjoy a walk in the beautiful surroundings. Karen Blixen is buried here.

Tuesday August 22 nd

Wednesday August 23 rd – Lecture on Danish/Nordic languages, Danish cinema/media, or Danish literature

Lecture at the University of Copenhagen held by a lecturer from the Department of Nordic Studies and Linguistics.

Thursday August 24 th – Harbour and canal tour

After lunch, we will go to Holmens Kirke, from where we will go on a harbour and canal tour. Here, you can sit back and enjoy a last view of Copenhagen and its sights – this time from the water. A guide will talk about the sights as we sail past them.

Friday August 25 th – Nyhavns Færgekro

After the last classes of the course, we will go to Nyhavn where we will enjoy a goodbye lunch at Nyhavns Færgekro with traditional Danish lunch dishes. One of the hostesses of the Færgekro will give us an introduction to the place and its history.
