On r 1 14 r n r Septembe 9, 9 , the Chai ma was autho ized to notify the Company that the Com mission was of opinion that the subway would be ready for use September 2 1st so far as its work was con r on cerned . An official inspection was made of the oute

In making the plans for this section (Section H) the Commission deemed it desirable to locate the subway in the BOSTON TRANSIT COMMISSION . center of Dorchest er avenue in order to avoid rebuilding a r n r n la ge i te cepti g sewer at considerable expense . This loca tion brought one of the sidewalls of the subway directly under the surface tracks of the Boston Elevated Railway Company an n r f d i c eased the di ficult y and cost of construction . An arrangem ent was made between the contractor and the Com pany by which the Company agreed to relocate its tracks r n ns r n r n n an for du i g the co t uctio of that po tio of the sect io , d such purpose the Commission granted a temporary location on . C n n P ns f r r and Old olo y ave ue . la o the station at B oadway for the terminal at Andrew square are still under consideration . Details of the work for the year will be found in the report C En of the hief gineer .

Use ofP art ofthe T unnel .

Conferences were held with the Boston Elevated Ra ilway Company as to the use of a portion of the tunnel before the m r d C r whole was co pleted . Such use was autho ize by hapte 130 A 1915 en and Com of the Special cts of , (App dix C) the pany expressed its willingness to equip and operate that portion nn P n n Was n t n of the tu el from ark street east , i cludi g hi g o n r statio (extending to Chauncy street) as soon as it was eady . A contract was executed with the Company for the use of that

In connection with the construction of the Dorchester tun e] the Commission was authorized to enlarge the Park street

r . r was station in the Tremont st eet subway This wo k , which necessarily slow in its progress on account of the difficult y of maintaining the t raffic without interruption and the fact that the various steps of the work had to be taken consecutively

A bill introduced into the Legislature to give the Commission additional powers in the construction of stations was passed by n r A 1 that body , bei g Chapte 376, Special cts of 915 (Appen Act ff dix H) . This was to take e ect upon acceptance by the

Little work remains to be done upon the East Boston Tunnel

B TREMONT STREET SU WAY .

Upon the erection of a theater upon the old Winthrop school lot the owners petitioned for the closing of the opening in the

r n r n r E r sidewalk at T emo t st eet ea liot st eet , which was an n n r n outlet for the ve tilati g chambe at that poi t . The Com

n r no r n an rt missio , howeve , had autho ity to expe d y fu her sums for account of the . The situa tion was relieved by the passage by the Legislature of Chapter 1915 A nd B 87, Special Acts of , ( ppe ix ) which was accepted E C n Un r c by the Boston levated Railway ompa y . de that A t the Commission has paid the cost of the relocation of the n n r in r n ve tilati g shaft , cha ging it to the cost of the T emo t

r and r r r n n st eet subway , the p op ieto s of the la d upo which the theater is erected have given to the City an easement i f r n n their property o the locatio of the shaft .

A description of the interior finish of the Washingt on station is as follows : The ceilings and upper part of the walls of

The lower part of the walls are of white polished terrazzo with a border of white and red ceramic tile and red terrazzo at the top between the white terrazzo and the plaster and also at the bottom between the white terrazzo and the granolithic

The escalator from the platform for eastbound trains has a 3 0 BOSTON TRANSIT COMMISSION . vertical lift of about 34 feet and lands the passengers at the Chaunc r a and it in r r y st eet sidew lk level, adjacent to , p ope ty r r taken for the pu pose . The escalator from the platfo m for westbound trains has a vertical lift of about 35 feet 34 inches and lands the passengers at the Hawley street sidewalk

E scalator T ests: Besides various electrical and temperature tests of the electric motors the escalators were subjected to an ffi ienc n r m u r haunc e c y test u de the maxi m cont act load . The C y street escalator was subjected to a full load test by carrying passengers at the rate of p er hour at 140 pounds p er p as n f r r r se ger or th ee consecutive hou s . This escalato is located near one of the stairways of the station and the m en em ployed in the test could ride up on the escalator and readily walk down the stairs to ride up again and repeat this trip c on l r n m t inuous y du i g the test . With 336 en it w as possible to keep the escalator continuously loaded with approxim ately

The East Boston Tunnel Ext ension is built of reinforced

It begins at a point in the original East Boston Tunnel abo ut 90 feet west from the westerly line of Washington street and n n r C r r r n r exte ds u de ou t st eet , Scollay squa e, Bowdoi squa e , Green and Cambridge streets and comes to the surface by an incline in the middle of Cambridge street between Chambers r r A st eet and No th Russell street . t this place Cambridge street has been widened about 46 feet to provide a roadway on n n P each side of the i cli e . At the beginning of the East Boston Tunnel Ext ension near W n r h r nn r ashingt o st eet , t e g ade of the old tu el was lowe ed , the Court street station abandoned and a new station built in Scollay square below the old station of the Tremont Street

During the year the work on Section G has comprised the general construction of the Scollay Under station and the con r n nn n st uctio of the tu el to the east of the station . The statio has been completed with the exception of some of the terrazzo finish on the walls and white cement plaster finish on the upper
