    JüdischerSusannah Heschel Islam: Islam und jüdisch-deutsche Selbstbestimmung Aus dem Englischen von Dirk Hartwig, Moritz Buchner und Georges Khalil Mit einem Nachwort von Georges Khalil 1 »Es war der Islam, der das jüdische Volk rettete!« So verkündete es der große jüdische Wissenschaftler des Islam und der mittelalterlichen jüdischen Geschichte Shlomo Dov Goitein (1900–1985) in einem Vortrag einer britisch-jüdischen Hörerschaft im Jahre 1958. Was war darunter zu verstehen, und wie war es zu dieser Errettung gekommen? Weil der Islam, so setzte Goitein hinzu, die ökonomischen und intellektuellen Voraussetzungen hervorbrachte, die eine »schöpferische Symbiose« geradezu ermutigten, die zwischen2 den jüdischen und islamischen Kulturen im Mittelalter entstand. Die Religion des Islam, so betonte Goitein, war eine Religion der »persönlichen Verantwortung des3 Menschen gegenüber Gott«, eine »Religion des ethischen Monotheismus«.     RAS ŪL AND NAB Ī: RE-EVALUATING THE QURANIC TERMINOLOGY FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE by MATTHEW LONG (Under the Direction of Kenneth Honerkamp) ABSTRACT Degrees of prophetic office have been a facet of Islamic discourse since the days of Muhammad’s early community. Are there degrees of prophecy? Are certain prophets superior to other prophets? The focal point of my thesis will be the two terms employed to designate prophetic office in the Quran, nab ī and ras ūl. This thesis will examine the linguistic features of each word then examine the attributes ascribed to each in the Quran. Following that will be a detailed study of the discourse on the eminence of these two terms. This survey of the discourse will feature theories by both Muslim and Western scholars. The final portion of this paper will examine the socio-historical setting of Muhammad and a quantitative-historical analysis of the Quranic terms ras ūl and nab ī. These analyses will demonstrate that Judaic influences shaped the language of Muhammad and the Quran in the Medinan time period.     CHAPTER 5 Paradise as a Quranic Discourse: Late Antique Foundations and Early Quranic Developments* Angelika Neuwirth 1 Introduction Eschatology is certainly among the central discourses of the Quran. Its promi- nence is largely due to the challenge encountered by the Quranic community that had to counterbalance the extremely powerful mundane pagan ideol- ogy that predominated in its Arabian milieu: the ideology of muruwwa, i.e., “heroism,” “tribal pride,” which expressed itself in a heroic and at the same time hedonist, “carpe-diem-life style,” embodied by the Bedouin hero and por- trayed by the ancient Arab poet.1 This anthropocentric understanding of the world, eloquently voiced in ancient Arabic poetry, is taken up as a primary target of the early Quranic message. Excessive worldliness and unlimited confidence in man’s autonomous power in the Quran is countered by a new, theocentric eschatological thinking. Quranic eschatology is projected through multiple images that during the first Meccan period of the Prophet’s minis- try crystallized into an elaborate drama2 often conjured up in the Quran. Yet, although the diverse events leading up to the last day – such as the cosmic cataclysm, the awakening of the dead, and the ensuing punishment of the sin- ners in hell – all play an important role in the message of eschatology, these are only secondary textual emplotments when compared with the core piece of Quranic eschatology, the image of paradise. As a prevalent Quranic motif, paradise not only exerted a sustainable influence on the spiritual life and the socio-political Weltanschauung of the Prophet’s contemporaries and later recipients of the Quran,3 but it also equally inspired classical Arabic literature and art.

ABSTRACT The present thesis is a critical examination of the two well-known post-Schachtian scholars of ®ad»th; James Robson and John Burton. Both scholars are major contributors to modern ®ad»th studies in the West. It assesses their main arguments and their methodological approaches to ®ad»th literature. It also provides a historical survey of the key arguments and works of their predecessors since the rise of the modern Western debates over the reliability of ®ad»th materials. This critical study points to the conclusion that Robson and Burton were heavily influenced by the sceptical attitude of Ignaz Goldziher and Joseph Schacht towards the historicity of ®ad»th.
