Gender Performativity in Japan
IJMSS Vol.04 Issue-09, (September, 2016) ISSN: 2321-1784 International Journal in Management and Social Science (Impact Factor- 5.276) Gender Performativity in Japan Lin Fan I-Shou University No. 1, Section 1, Xuecheng Rd., Dashu District Kaohsiung City, TAIWAN Abstract This paper explores gender issues Japanese daily life or traditional and contemporary shows. Specifically, it looks at gender politics in a number of performing arts, highlighting ways in which humor constructs the feminine. Like eroticism, humor builds on a fascination with the real ambiguity of gender; and reciprocally gender is sensually and humorously fashioned. Humorous performances arise from the aesthetic disturbance or subversion of historically specific gender prescriptions, just as the child develops role-playing strategies to understand what makes a male and a female body, game or activity before assimilating the gender divisions that prevail in her world. Gender is understood in this paper as a sort of unfinished picture that people have fun crafting. Keywords: humor; gender; performance; Japan. -

Natalia M. Dolgorukova СEST ROMANZ FIST CRESTÏENS CHRÉTIEN DE TROYES AND THE BIRTH OF THE FRENCH NOVEL BASIC RESEARCH PROGRAM WORKING PAPERS SERIES: LITERARY STUDIES WP BRP 24/LS/2017 This Working Paper is an output of a research project implemented at the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE). Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE Natalia M. Dolgorukova1 СEST ROMANZ FIST CRESTÏENS CHRÉTIEN DE TROYES AND THE BIRTH OF THE FRENCH NOVEL2 The paper addresses three controversial issues in two romances by Chrétien de Troyes - Yvain, or the Knight with the Lion and Lancelot, or the Knight of the Cart. Both romances were written around 1176-1180 and because of their narrative continuity and complementarity could be considered as a diptych. First, we examine the evolution of Chretien’s conception of love, “mysteriously” changing from his first romances to Lancelot; then we enter into the debate between celtisants and their critics about the Celtic influence in Chretien and consider Celtic sources of the two romances; we conclude the article, tracing out the fairy tale paradigm in both romances, which helps us reveal new meanings of the cart and the lion, operating as magic agents in the romances. Kamishibai, What Is It? Some Preliminary Findings
1 KAMISHIBAI, WHAT IS IT? SOME PRELIMINARY FINDINGS Jeffrey A. Dym From January to May 2007, I spent time researching the history of kamishibai in Japan. Prior to leaving, when my colleagues asked me what I was researching, I would reply kamishibai. Of course, they had no idea what I was talking about. When you tell someone in Japan you are studying kamishibai, they might look at you with a puzzled look, wondering why you are studying that and not something more practical and business oriented but at least they know what you are talking about. For most Americans, the subject is completely arcane. The usual translation of kamishibai is “paper plays.” But I found that telling my colleagues that I was studying paper plays really didn’t clarify things. It often conjured up for them an image of Indonesian puppet theater. Instead, I usually resorted to telling them that I was studying a type of street performance that was popular in Japan during the 1930s and 1950s. Indeed, it is possible to offer a fairly straightforward description of kamishibai. Kamishibai, in a format similar to the ones presented on Kamishibai for Kids, first appeared in 1930 in Tokyo and quickly became one of the most popular forms of mass entertainment in the major cities of Japan. Kamishibai is designed so that virtually anyone can perform it. Though the first kamishibai didn’t have words on the back, within a few years of its debut words were added to the back of the pictures so that anyone could perform it.
