Entre le temps fort consacré à Mé 67 et la jet-set imaginaire du coupé-décalé, entre le centenaire de Jean Rouch et le Pas de Côté consacré aux traditions inventées, le festival naviguera de souvenirs douloureux en fictions hilarantes, de récits des routes musicales en cérémonies aux ancêtres, entre vérités plurielles et créations enjaillées. Two acoustic duos from remarkably different traditions share this one- time-only double bill. Germán López is a world-renowned timple player from Spain, and is joined by Spanish guitarist Antonio Toledo. López has been performing since the age of 10, including collaborations with the symphony orchestra of Gran Canaria and festival appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. Pronounced “tim-play,” the timple is a diminutive 5-stringed instrument that resembles the 4-stringed ukulele, which López brings to life through a joyous sound that is similar to flamenco music but with a very Portuguese flair. Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones are from Eunice, Louisiana and specialize in Cajun music, honky-tonk and swing on guitar and fiddle. Savoy is the son of renowned Cajun musicians Mark & Ann Savoy, is owner/producer at the Grammy-winning label Valcour Records, and is also the Artistic Director of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes. This is his third SMF appearance. Kelli Jones grew up playing old-time fiddle alongside her father Carl Jones in North Carolina, and has lived in Louisiana for the past decade. She also performs and tours with Feufollet and T’Monde, in addition to this compelling new project. -

South Riding Folk Arts Network The Generations Tune Book Dance music from three centuries arranged for mixed ensembles compiled and designed by Paul Davenport The Generations Tune Book The Generations Tune Book Dance music from three centuries arranged for mixed ensembles compiled and designed by Paul Davenport South Riding Folk Arts Network © 2005 The Generations Tune Book Introduction The Generations Tunebook was born of necessity during the course of an educational initiative called, ‘The Generations Project’. The project itself was initially, a simple exercise in Citizenship in a large South Yorkshire comprehensive school. The motivation behind this was to place teenagers at the heart of their community. The results of this venture had repercussions which are still being felt in the small mining town of Maltby which lies in the borough of Rotherham, not far from Sheffield. In 2002, the music department at Maltby Comprehensive School in partnership with the South Riding Folk Arts Network set about the task of teaching a group of 13 and 14 years old students the longsword dance. In this undertaking much support and encouragement was given by the national folk organisation, the English Folk Dance & Song Society. A group of students learned the dance whilst others learned to play the tunes to accompany the performance. Financial support from the school’s PTA allowed Head of Art, Liz Davenport, to create the striking costumes worn by the dancers. More support appeared in the form of folk arts development agency Folk South West who generously discounted their ‘College Hornpipe’ tunebook for the project. Players of orchestral instruments suddenly found themselves being extended by the apparently ‘simple’ melodies arranged by Paul Burgess. -

On stage with guitarist Antonio Toledo, Germán harnesses the grit of Spanish flamenco, the structure of West African rhythms, the flourishing spirit of jazz, and an innovative 21st century approach to performing “island music.” His principal instrument is one of the grandfathers of the ‘ukelele’, and part of the same instrumental family that includes the cavaquinho, the cuatro and the charango. Germán López’s music has been praised for “entrancing” performances of “delicately rippling notes” (Huffington Post), notes that flow from musical traditions uniting Spain, Africa, and the New World. The “timple” is a diminutive 5 stringed instrument intrinsic to music of the Canary Islands. Of all the hypotheses that exist about the origin of the “timple”, the most widely accepted is that it descends from the European baroque guitar, smaller than the classical guitar, and with five strings. VOL 15, NO 1 ! 2015 DOI: 10.11157/medianz-vol15iss1id8 - ARTICLE - Re-Establishing Britishness / Englishness: Representation Through Music in a non-Parliamentary Nation Robert Burns Abstract The absence of a contemporary English identity distinct from right wing political elements has reinforced negative and apathetic perceptions of English folk culture and tradition among populist media. Negative perceptions such as these have to some extent been countered by the emergence of a post–progressive rock–orientated English folk–protest style that has enabled new folk music fusions to establish themselves in a populist performance medium that attracts a new folk audience. In this way, English politicised folk music has facilitated an English cultural identity that is distinct from negative social and political connotations. A significant contemporary national identity for British folk music in general therefore can be found in contemporary English folk as it is presented in a homogenous mix of popular and world music styles, despite a struggle both for and against European identity as the United Kingdom debates ‘Brexit’, the current term for its possible departure from the EU. My mother was half English and I'm half English too I'm a great big bundle of culture tied up in the red, white and blue (Billy Bragg and the Blokes 2002). When the singer and songwriter, Billy Bragg wrote the above song, England, Half English, a friend asked him whether he was being ironic. He replied ‘Do you know what, I’m not’, a statement which shocked his friends. Bragg is a social commentator, political activist and staunch socialist who is proudly English and an outspoken anti–racist, which his opponents may see as arguably diametrically opposed combination.
