Turning Pages Faculty of Humanities English Department Chair of English Literatures Turning Pages An Annual Creative Writing Journal at Chemnitz University of Technology Turning Pages is an annual journal of bright voices from all over Issue 1, 2019 the world in creative and original writing in English in short fic- tion, creative nonfiction, poetry, and drama, as well as in dra- wings, art projects and many other related genres by students, academics, and writers. It is a production of the Chair of Eng- lish Literatures at the English Department at Chemnitz Univer- sity of Technology, Germany, and the first journal of its kind at the university. Turning Pages can be read in both ways, literally and metapho- rically, implying that we need to turn the pages, that we need to demonstrate that literature has something to say and that it can also be interventionist as it shows how we can use our own imagination for the better. Therefore, Turning Pages will make readers not only literally browse through a variety of texts and turn pages, but it also seeks to reflect situations, events, experiences, or emotions that turn the page for individuals, or groups of people. The first issue of Turning Pages features a range of texts and artworks, including first-time writers as well as professional writers, such as Michael Augustin, Sujata Bhatt, Stephen Collis, Ian Watson and the renowned Belfast theatre company Play It By Ear. So, she bought an avalanche backpack, reflective protectors for her body and only wanted to ski on a slope. Now she would be safe. On the way to the lift, her car broke down. Cecile Sandten Smelling Politics “There is a newcomer in the neighbourhood. He’s pleasantly smelly. Have you met him?” “No. But I’ve met Coco with her splendidly, amazingly stinky pee.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: MEMORIALES SCHREIBEN UND PHÄNOMENE DER LITERARISCHEN ERINNERUNG BEI WALTER BENJAMIN, ERNST JÜNGER UND FRIEDO LAMPE Katharina Rudolf, PhD, 2010 Directed By: Professor Peter Beicken, Department of Germanic Studies This study introduces the concept of “memoriales Schreiben” (‘memorial writing’) as a literary mode that differs from the chronological narratives of traditional autobiographies. In the Introduction, I place “memoriales Schreiben” in the context of the theories of memory, including Maurice Halbwachs’s “kollektives Gedächtnis” (‘collective memory’) and Aleida and Jan Assmann’s “kulturelles Gedächtnis” (’cultural memory’). Examining the literary modes and techniques of remembering and narrating memories and focusing on “Gedächtnisarbeit” (‘memory work’), and “Gedächtnisräume” (’spaces of memory’), I discuss works by three authors who share many generational experiences although their works left very different marks on German literature and culture: Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), Ernst Jünger (1895-1998), and Friedo Lampe (1899-1945). Chapter One analyzes Benjamin’s Berliner Chronik and Berliner Kindheit um neunzehnhundert . As the revising of these childhood memories evidences, Benjamin’s “memoriales Schreiben” transforms the autobiographical into a ‘memory work’ that reflects the intersection of personal story and general history. Chapter Two examines Jünger’s output after his initial WWI diary turned narrative, In Stahlgewittern . Works such as Afrikanische Spiele and Das Abenteuerliche Herz reveal fictionalized autobiographical material while Auf den Marmorklippen deals with cultural and contemporary memory. Chapter Three investigates Lampe’s two novels and some short stories printed despite the Nazi publishing restrictions. His ‘memorial writing’ serves as a cultural recollection of times that faded from memory during the Nazi period.

Eine Schadensersatzklage der Braunschweiger Nuklearfirma Eckert & Ziegler gegen fünf Umweltaktivisten be- schäftigt derzeit die Justiz. Anlass ist eine Demonstration von Mitgliedern der Braun- schweiger Bürgerinitiative Strahlenschutz (BISS) im Juni 2015 gegen den Bau eines neuen Zauns um das Firmengelände. Aus Sicht von Eckert & Ziegler haben die De- monstranten das Vorhaben verzögert, da- durch sei dem Unternehmen Schaden ent- standen. Der Streitwert in dem Verfahren ist mit 1470 Euro beziffert. Ein erster Verhand- lungstermin vor dem Braunschweiger Amts- gericht endete am Donnerstag ohne Urteil, weil die BISS den vom Gericht vorgeschla- genen Vergleich ablehnte. Eckert & Ziegler stellt radioaktive Produk- te für die Medizin her, etwa Substanzen für radiologische Untersuchungen und Strah- lenquellen für Krebstherapien. Ein zweiter Geschäftszweig ist die Konditionierung von Atommüll, also die Behandlung und Verpa- ckung der Abfälle für eine spätere Zwischen- oder Endlagerung. Das Betriebsgelände im Stadtteil Thune grenzt an ein Wohngebiet, auch eine Schule und ein Kindergarten lie- gen in unmittelbarer Nähe. Der Bau eines neuen Zaunes im vergange- nen Sommer war nach Auffassung der BISS zumindest teilweise illegal. Er sei höher er- richtet worden, als es ohne Baugenehmi- gung zulässig gewesen sei. Eckert & Zieg- ler habe die bereits errichteten Teile des Zau- nes später auch zurückbauen müssen, sagt BISS-Sprecher Peter Meyer. Er verweist zu- dem darauf, dass ein Strafverfahren in der Sache inzwischen eingestellt wurde. In der Schadensersatzklage sehen Meyer und seine Mitstreiter den Versuch, den Pro- test einzuschüchtern. Das Unternehmen kritisiert hingegen das Vorgehen der Bür- Sommer, Sonne, Sonnenschein: Urlauber bevölkern die Nordseeinsel Wangerooge, um ein paar Wochen Freizeit zu genießen.
