August 2, 1918–April 12 , 2004 Elected to the NAS, 1972 Life George William Whitehead, Jr., was born in Bloomington, Ill., on August 2, 1918. Little is known about his family or early life. Whitehead received a BA from the University of Chicago in 1937, and continued at Chicago as a graduate student. The Chicago Mathematics Department was somewhat ingrown at that time, dominated by L. E. Dickson and Gilbert Bliss and exhibiting “a certain narrowness of focus: the calculus of variations, projective differential geometry, algebra and number theory were the main topics of interest.”1 It is possible that Whitehead’s interest in topology was stimulated by Saunders Mac Lane, who By Haynes R. Miller spent the 1937–38 academic year at the University of Chicago and was then in the early stages of his shift of interest from logic and algebra to topology. Of greater importance for Whitehead was the appearance of Norman Steenrod in Chicago. Steenrod had been attracted to topology by Raymond Wilder at the University of Michigan, received a PhD under Solomon Lefschetz in 1936, and remained at Princeton as an Instructor for another three years. He then served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago between 1939 and 1942 (at which point he moved to the University of Michigan). -

REVERSE MATHEMATICS OF THE UNCOUNTABILITY OF R: BAIRE CLASSES, METRIC SPACES, AND UNORDERED SUMS SAM SANDERS Abstract. Dag Normann and the author have recently initiated the study of the logical and computational properties of the uncountability of R formalised as the statement NIN (resp. NBI) that there is no injection (resp. bijection) from [0, 1] to N. On one hand, these principles are hard to prove relative to the usual scale based on comprehension and discontinuous functionals. On the other hand, these principles are among the weakest principles on a new com- plimentary scale based on (classically valid) continuity axioms from Brouwer’s intuitionistic mathematics. We continue the study of NIN and NBI relative to the latter scale, connecting these principles with theorems about Baire classes, metric spaces, and unordered sums. The importance of the first two topics re- quires no explanation, while the final topic’s main theorem, i.e. that when they exist, unordered sums are (countable) series, has the rather unique property of implying NIN formulated with the Cauchy criterion, and (only) NBI when formulated with limits. This study is undertaken within Ulrich Kohlenbach’s framework of higher-order Reverse Mathematics. 1. Introduction The uncountability of R deals with arbitrary mappings with domain R, and is therefore best studied in a language that has such objects as first-class citizens. Obviousness, much more than beauty, is however in the eye of the beholder. Lest we be misunderstood, we formulate a blanket caveat: all notions (computation, continuity, function, open set, et cetera) used in this paper are to be interpreted via their higher-order definitions, also listed below, unless explicitly stated otherwise. -

The financial environment in which Fortis Bank operates was influenced in 2003 by an international unstable geopolitical situation combined with less than positive economic conditions and an improving, though still hesitant stock market climate. Also today in 1958, NASA was established by an act of Congress. More? In 1962, the 300-foot radio telescope of the National Ra- dio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) went live at Green Bank, West Virginia. It held place as the world’s second largest radio scope until it collapsed in 1988. Tonight let’s visit with an old lunar favorite. Easily seen in binoculars, the hexagonal walled plain of Albategnius ap- pears near the terminator about one-third the way north of the south limb. Look north of Albategnius for even larger and more ancient Hipparchus giving an almost “figure 8” view in binoculars. Between Hipparchus and Albategnius to the east are mid-sized craters Halley and Hind. Note the curious ALBATEGNIUS AND HIPPARCHUS ON THE relationship between impact crater Klein on Albategnius’ southwestern wall and TERMINATOR CREDIT: ROGER WARNER that of crater Horrocks on the northeastern wall of Hipparchus. Now let’s power up and “crater hop”... Just northwest of Hipparchus’ wall are the beginnings of the Sinus Medii area. Look for the deep imprint of Seeliger - named for a Dutch astronomer. Due north of Hipparchus is Rhaeticus, and here’s where things really get interesting. If the terminator has progressed far enough, you might spot tiny Blagg and Bruce to its west, the rough location of the Surveyor 4 and Surveyor 6 landing area. -
