Submitted by: Bill Friesen Department: Graduate Department of English, University of Toronto This dissertation investigates through the paradigms of the opus geminatum genre the relationship of the Old English verse Andreas to its potential exemplars, influences and subsequent renderings. The study focuses specifically upon the ways in which inherited textual dynamics of the opus geminatum—a pair of texts, one in verse and one in prose, which ostensibly treat the same subject—contribute to substantive and stylistic parallels or deviations between Andreas and these other texts. The first chapter positions the paradigm of the opus geminatum alongside the ongoing discussions about the relationships both of internal elements within Andreas, and between Andreas and its Latin or Old English analogues. It provides a detailed overview of the opus geminatum as this grows out of late antique traditions of paraphrase and into the distinctive and highly nuanced genre which Anglo-Saxon authors made their own. It argues that amidst the debates about Andreas’ relationship to other texts, the opus geminatum affords both an historically appropriate and potentially very productive paradigm. The second chapter considers within this paradigm the interplay of content and style between Andreas and what is often thought to be its closest Latin exemplar found in the Casanatensis manuscript, for I contend here that the shift in style, from Latin prose to Old English verse, bears a necessary, dramatic and consistently iii overlooked influence upon the content of the Old English Andreas, changing not only how one reads that content, but the very substantive nature of the content itself. In Chapter Three the discussion shifts to the relationship Andreas has with an indigenous work, Beowulf, for which a number of recent studies have laid a new groundwork which suggests exciting possibilities for analysis, most significantly at the formulaic level, exploring the tension between explicit oral and literary indebtedness between the two poems. Finally, in Chapter Four the focus shifts to a comparison between the verse Andreas and its Old English prose version of the legend, in MS Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, 198, fols. 386r–394v, allowing one to explore in concrete detail the assertions which opus geminatum writers like Alcuin made about the difference and affinities between prose and verse treatments of opus geminatum texts. My conclusion draws together the broad tendencies mapped throughout this inquiry and considers the intrinsically relational nature of a text like Andreas. It argues in light of uncovered evidence for the efficacy and flexibility of the methods intrinsic to the opus geminatum as a highly appropriate analytical lens and explores from the broad perspective how this paradigm opens numerous horizons of engagement, such as with the embedded language of the liturgy in MS Cambridge, Corpus Christi College, 198, or the self-conscious investment of secular literary traditions in Beowulf with Christian literary projects, such as Andreas. iv For my parents, who know not at all, and for my wife, who knows only too well. v Acknowledgements Too often, acknowledgements like these are quickly written and just as quickly forgotten, but I shall not quickly forget the personal, professional and institutional support I enjoyed and often needed while writing this thesis. Conclusion. 293 Appendix I: Content of the Casantansis Account and Andreas . 301 Appendix II: Cluster Index: Beowulf and Andreas . 308 Works Consulted . 313 1 Chapter I Andreas and the Opus Geminatum For scholars of Old English literature, the concept of pairing or twinning is very familiar;1 at the level of prosody, lines of verse are divided into their a- and b- components; compounds constitute an essential part of this literature’s diction; its kennings depend upon the interplay between a pair of verbal elements; its alliteration in and between lines doubles, and then often plays off that doubling for effect.2 At a broader level, characters and their characteristics are portrayed relative to one another, incidents repeat, and are simultaneously varied, stages of life or plot are presented in light of one another.3 Intertextually, texts and their components gesture significantly towards other texts, providing their audiences with an often methodical, complex and pervasive web of allusions, an understanding of which is requisite to the appreciation of such literature.4 A substantial amount of modern scholarship surrounds aspects of this twinning.     The departure of the hero in a ship: The intertextuality of Beowulf , Cynewulf and Andreas 1 Francis Leneghan University of Oxford This article identifies a new Old English poetic motif, ‘The Departure of the Hero in a Ship’, and discusses the implications of its presence in Beowulf , the signed poems of Cynewulf and Andreas , a group of texts already linked by shared lexis, imagery and themes. It argues that the Beowulf -poet used this motif to frame his work, foregrounding the question of royal succession. Cynewulf and the Andreas -poet then adapted this Beowulfian motif in a knowing and allusive manner for a new purpose: to glorify the church and to condemn its enemies. Introduction Scholars have identified a number of ‘motifs’, ‘themes’ or ‘type scenes’ in Old English poetry. Yeargin A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in English Middle Tennessee State University August 2014 Thesis Committee: Dr. Rhonda McDaniel, Chair Dr. Amy Kaufman ABSTRACT Critics have extensively explored the tensions in Beowulf between Christianity and Paganism, literacy and orality, and heroism and kingship, yet little work has been done toward understanding another prominent binary: nature and artifice. This thesis examines instances when the Beowulf-poet brings images of artifice and images of nature into close proximity. Along with the introduction of literacy, new technologies and ideas were suddenly thrust into Anglo-Saxon culture, and one of the ways in which the people explored these social matters was through poetry such as Beowulf. The thesis first attempts to delineate the concepts of artifice and nature as they might have been viewed from an Anglo-Saxon perspective. This enables us to see how the poet utilizes these concepts to build vibrant aesthetic effects, to construct dynamic characters, and finally to bridge the conceptual divide between his current Christian audience and their Pagan ancestors. These “spatial effects” recur with enough frequency and sophistication to suggest that they stem from intentional creative decisions. Still, many Modern English translations of Beowulf obscure their significance or ignore them altogether. If, for instance, an image appears to waver between artifice and nature, the critical inclination has been to resolve instead of embrace the tension. Contemporary scholars and translators tend to simplify what the Beowulf-poet apparently wanted to complicate.

Landscape was a component of any community since, during the period when Old English poetry was being composed and written down, the landscape was a far more important constituent of daily life than it is for the majority of people today. Landscape dictated the places that could be settled, as well as the placing of the paths, fords, and bridges that joined them; it controlled boundaries, occupations, and trading routes. In the poetry of the period landscape, as part of the fabric of community, is the arbiter of whether each element of a community is in its proper place and relationship to the others. It is the means of explaining how a community is constructed, policed, and empowered.

Beverly, Jr. 2014 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Since the beginning of Beowulf scholarship, much debate has been given to whether the poet emphasizes the paganism of his pre-Christian characters, or the Christianity practiced by himself and his audience. Proponents for each stance have given sound arguments, often through comparing Beowulf to other works of heroic Germanic literature, particularly Icelandic sagas and Eddic poetry. In this thesis, I, myself compare Beowulf to works such as Volsunga Saga, Hrolfssaga Kraka and Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda. As I acknowledge and expand on prior scholarship, I argue that the Beowulf poet portrays pre-Christian Germanic society as one accommodated within his own, by showing how the poet develops his hero according to virtues from the pre-Christian past, and which were still celebrated by his contemporary audience.

It was sparked off by a brief comment in T. A. Shippey's excellent study of Old English poetry on the use of meoduscerwen in Andreas: '. it is . odd to compare anything "bitter" to mead, a sweet drink. The metaphor is muddled, and may have been borrowed.'1 To any student of early Welsh verse the concept of 'bitter mead' is not odd, but very familiar. Since it is best expressed in The Gododdin where it is closely linked to the idea of the retainer paying for his lord's mead in battle, an idea which I knew is also found in Old English poetry, it appeared to be worthwhile to examine whether meoduscerwen belonged to a similar complex of ideas. If it is accepted that it does, at least on this account the Andreas poet can be absolved of having clumsily imitated the compound ealuscerwen in Beowulf by thoughtlessly substituted sweet mead for ale in the context of 'bitter drinking'.

What changing conditions of the social construction of masculinity contributed to the emergence of a new literary hero? Comparing Chrétien de Troyes’ first Arthurian romance, Erec et Enide, with the Danish adventure that comprises the first two-thirds of Beowulf through the lens of masculinity reveals much about the hero’s changing initiation into manhood. Each receives the property and status that recognizes his manhood at the end of his exploits, suggesting that his performance has demonstrated accepted masculine behavior. The heroes’ actions are measured against an array of others—beasts, women, boys, and old men—not only demonstrating their superiority over these others but also absorbing some of their qualities.

Reinterpreting aspects of Beowulf’s narrative through the allegorical framework of towers and ruins, with towers representing achievements and ruins serving as the permanent reminder of those achievements, this master’s thesis explores the malleability of this creative process to summon and reshape the past in Anglo-Saxon literature. By extending the allegory of ruins to characters, material objects and their verbal descriptions, and imagined spaces that exist only within cultural recollections, one can more readily see the currents and forces by which narratives have the power to shape realities—and how there are absences that hint at possible realities left unexpressed. Beowulf is imbued with history because its settings revivify places that are dead and destroyed. Much of what happens in Beowulf occurs inside what to the Beowulf poet and his contemporary audience would have been a culturally remembered ruin, if not a physically known one.
