BOSTON COLLEGE septiembre-diciembre de 2012 BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL SPANISH RL 035.01 Carney 303 Karen Daggett [email protected] Horas de consulta: Before class, 5:15-6:00 Texto-Coursepack obligatorio: ¡Así! Levy-Konesky and Daggett Descripción: This is a performance-oriented/telecourse (Destinos) designed to help you attain novice level oral proficiency or the ability to participate in elementary conversations within and outside of the classroom. You will learn to express courtesies, ask and answer questions, handle basic social situations and simple needs. You will talk about yourself and your preferences, interests and activities in present time. Through oral, written, individual and group exercises, cultural readings, audio and video, you will practice the four language learning skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Special attention will be given to cultural themes that reflect the richness and diversity of the Hispanic world. 1. This is a beginning course for those who have not studied Spanish or for those who have taken the Proficiency Test and have placed into this level. 2. In part, RL035 is a telecourse, designed to utilize the advantages made possible through the medium of video, in this case the Destinos Beginning Spanish video program. You will not purchase the Destinos textbook, but rather a coursepack (¡Así! ), which is available in the WCAS office, in McGuinn 100. You will use Blackboard Vista to access and turn in homework exercises and activities, and to listen to audio segments that are related to the Destinos episodes that you will view in class. The video segments are also accessible on Blackboard Vista (BbVista). 3. Follow the syllabus carefully. Come to class prepared, ready to contribute actively. The assignments on the syllabus scheduled for a particular day must be completed before you come to class. Assignments may change. 4. In addition to the syllabus, the Blackboard Vista page for RL035 contains exercises and information required for class. To access your online BBVista with Internet Explorer 7, Firefox 2.0 (for PC users) and Safari (for MAC users), type in http://cms.bc.edu, go to the entry page and enter your BC user name and password. User names and passwords are obtained in the Student Learning Services Center in the main library. 5. The Language Lab is located in Lyons 313. If you have difficulties accessing Blackboard Vista on your home computer, you are welcome to work in the language lab, which contains numerous Macs and PCs. Check out the laboratory schedule by visiting http://www.bc.edu/langlab . 6. One absence is allowed. Further absences will strongly affect your final grade. Come to every class. Excessive absences—even if they are excused (officially)—may also seriously affect your grade. 7. If you are a student with a documented learning disability seeking reasonable accommodations in this course, please contact the Connors Family Learning Center (617-552-8093); regarding all other types of disabilities, please contact the Disability Services Office (617-552- 3470). 8. exámenes (2) 40% pruebas (6) (Lowest grade is dropped) 10% examen final 20% classwork (preparation, participation; homework, project) 30% The Destinos telecourse An elderly man, don Fernando Castillo, has retired to, La Gavia, his hacienda located outside a small town close to Mexico City. This wealthy ex-patriot, who left Spain at the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), is now very ill. His hope is to live out the remainder of his years peacefully, in the presence of his large and loving family. One day a letter arrives -- a letter in which a woman from Spain makes claims about don Fernando’s past. Gathering his family around him, he reveals a secret, and then announces that he must send someone to Spain to speak with Teresa Suárez, the writer of the letter. Raquel Rodríguez, an attorney from Los Angeles, accepts the challenge of visiting Teresa in Spain and investigating her claims. What is don Fernando’s secret? What will Raquel discover on her journey? Are there surprises awaiting Raquel as well? La familia Castillo (The Castillo Family) Pedro Castillo – hermano (brother) de Fernando Rosario del Valle – esposa de Fernando Ramón Castillo – hijo (son) de Fernando Mercedes Castillo – hija (daughter) de Fernando Consuelo - esposa (wife) de Ramón Carlos Castillo – hijo de don Fernando Maricarmen – hija (daughter) de Ramón y Consuelo Gloria – esposa de Carlos Juan Castillo – hijo de don Fernando Juanita – hija de Carlos y Gloria Pati – esposa de Juan Carlitos – hijo de Carlos y Gloria This is the scaffolding of the 52-episode video/television course known as Destinos. Summaries of the episodes that we will and will not be viewing in class are provided on Blackboard Vista, along with spoken and written exercises and activities that will help you to develop elementary – level Spanish language proficiency. In the video segments, you will listen to three “kinds” of Spanish: the first is conversational Spanish, which is spoken by the characters. The second kind of Spanish is spoken by Raquel, the attorney who is investigating the case. She will review the highlights at the end of the episode. The third Spanish, the easiest for you to understand, is spoken by the off-screen narrator. You are not expected to understand all of the Spanish spoken in the Destinos episodes! In this class, you will hear a fourth Spanish—that which is used by your instructor as she guides you in the language-learning process, using Destinos and other videos, related activities and exercises from Blackboard Vista, and the ¡Así! textbook-coursepack. Finally, the fifth Spanish is your voice and that of your classmates, which will develop according to the measure of effort that you put into the course. The video episodes have been downloaded onto the RL035 Blackboard Vista site for your convenience, should you want to view the episodes seen in class as well as those that are omitted. Destinos was filmed in Mexico, Spain, Argentina and Puerto Rico. You will be exposed to various Hispanic cultures and dialects by the use of this telenovela. ¡Así! In addition to the Destinos video episodes and activities, another course pillar is your ¡Así! textbook-coursepack. For economic reasons, the text has been converted into a coursepack in which are found the grammar points that will be addressed this semester, as well as dialogs and related activities that are part of your homework assignments. The vocabulary words and activities from the original textbook, however, have been modified and are located in the ‘Vocabulario’ folder on the Blackboard Vista homepage. ¡Así!: LECCION PRELIMINAR ¡Bienvenidos!
