For how harsh or rude soeuer my speech be, yet am I sure that my translation will be much easier to my contriemen, than the Greeke copie is, euen to such as are best practised in the Greeke tonge, by reason of Plutarkes peculiar maner of inditing, which is rather sharpe, learned and short, than plaine, pol- ished and easie.1 These are the words of Thomas North in his 1579 Lives of the Noble Grecians and Romans, a translation that successfully found its way ‘abroad’ to the hands of many of his ‘countrymen’. One of them gave the book an afterlife of which North could hardly have dreamt. The translator’s words may have made Shakespeare wonder what 1 Copyrighted material – 978–1–137–40148–9 Copyrighted material – 978–1–137–40148–9 2 Tania Demetriou and Rowan Tomlinson ‘Plutarkes peculiar maner of inditing’ was really like, or reflect on the English prose he was reading and whether it did succeed in ‘resembling and shadowing out of the forme of his style and the maner of his speaking’. They may even have made Shakespeare, avid reader of translations that he was, pause to ponder ‘the office of a fit translater’. This is the more likely because of the notorious paucity of translation theory in this corner of Europe that the humanist enter- prise reached late, and which so greatly depended on translation. Yet Englishmen reading these words were not being led to such reflections by North, but by the French translator of Plutarch that North was translating: this is Jacques Amyot’s ‘Epistle to the Reader’, Englished by North along with the Lives. North makes this clear in the title: ‘Amiot to the Readers’. Many readers would also have been aware that it was not North but Amyot who could accurately speak of a series of previous translations by him as being ‘abroad in mens hands’. By 1579, Amyot, ‘the most admired translator of his time’, had established himself specifically as the bringer of Greek culture to vernacular readers.2 With the Vies (1559) and the Oeuvres morales (1574), Amyot made the entirety of Plutarch’s vast corpus available to a vernacular readership. His Plutarch versions had been preceded by notably ambitious translations of Heliodorus’ Aethiopica (1548), and of Books 11–17 of Diodorus Siculus’ Library (1554). The Vies was the first complete translation of the work to be published, as his Heliodorus had been; and in the same year, Amyot brought out Longus’ Daphnis and Chloe, publishing the novel in French before its editio princeps.3 The French translator could look back to these other works, and find his idiom in the Vies less ‘flowing’, or ‘coulant’.4 He could speak as someone who had engaged with Greek prose extensively enough to judge that Plutarch’s style was different from that of Heliodorus, or Longus, or Diodorus, ‘plus aiguë, plus docte & pressee’, and not ‘clere, polie ou aisee’. North, who could do none of these things, does not hide this, but defers to Amyot’s authority by carefully translating his epistle. He offers his own, separate, far more modest translation statement: ‘My onely purpose is to desire you to excuse the faults of my translation with your owne gentlenes, and with the opinion of my diligence and good intent.’ But he also trans- lates Amyot’s translation theory because he recognizes that it has something to offer to the reader. He does not translate Amyot’s letter mechanically: where Amyot speaks of his audience as the ‘François’, Copyrighted material – 978–1–137–40148–9 Copyrighted material – 978–1–137–40148–9 Introduction 3 North turns it into ‘my contriemen’, thus bringing the epistle a step closer to the new audience, but without appropriating Amyot’s voice or opinions. He engages with Amyot’s translation theory, finding English terms for it – ‘la sentence de son autheur’ becomes his ‘mean- ing’, ‘representer aucunement & … adumbrer’ becomes ‘a certain resembling and shadowing out’ – and giving it a new circulation.

The Iconographyof False Friendship By CLIFFORD DAVIDSON THE REALIZATION THAT iconographic tableaux appear at central points in the drama of Shakespeare no longer seems to involve a radical critical perspective. Thus a recent study is able to show convincingly that the playwright presented audiences with a Hamlet who upon his first appear- ance on stage illustrated what the Renaissance would certainly have recognized as the melancholic contemplative personality.' As I have noted in a previous article, the hero of Macbeth when he sees the bloody dagger before him is in fact perceiving the image which most clearly denotes tragedy itself; in the emblem books, the dagger is indeed the symbol of tragedy,2 which will be Macbeth's fate if he pursues his bloody course of action. Such tableaux, it must be admitted, are often central to the meaning and the action of the plays.

    i 11 Parallel Lives: Plutarch's Lives, Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger (1405-1438) and the Art of Italian Renaissance Translation CHRISTOPHER S. CELENZA Before his premature death in 1438 of an outbreak of plague in Ferrara, the Florentine humanist and follower of the papal curia Lapo da Castiglionchio the Younger left behind three main bodies of work in Latin, all still either unedited or incompletely edited: his own self-collected letters, a small number of prose treatises, and a sizeable corpus of Greek-to-Latin translations. This paper concerns primarily the last of these three aspects of his work and has as its evidentiary focus two autograph manuscripts that contain inter alia final versions of Lapo's Latin translations of Plutarch's Lives of Themistocles, Artaxerxes, and Aratus. In addition, however, to studying Lapo's translating techniques, this paper will address chiefly the complexities of motivation surrounding Lapo's choice of dedicatees for these translations. The range of circumstances will demonstrate, I hope, the lengths to which a young, little-known humanist had to go to support himself in an environment where there was as yet no real fixed, institutional place for a newly created discipline. Lapo and Translation: Patronage, Theory, and Practice Of the three areas mentioned, Lapo's translations represent the most voluminous part of his oeuvre and in fact it is to his translations that he owes his modem reputation. But why did this young humanist devote so much energy to translating? And why were Plutarch's Lives such an important part of his effort? The seventeenth- I have been interested for some time century biographers and their succes in the life and works of the great Eliza- sors have been forced to bridge the gap between Philemon’s Cambridge days and his appearance as a physician and schoolmaster in Coventry with the gen- eral statement that “soon after 1595 Holland settled at Coventry, where he remained for the rest of his life” (Sir Sidney Lee in “Dictionary of National Biography”). Several months ago I was fortunate enough to secure from a London book- seller a copy of the Aldine “Lucani Civilis Belli,” Venetiis, 1502, on the half-title of which is the dated signature of Philemon Holland, herewith repro- duced. From this it appears that Hol- land was resident in Coventry at least as early as 1587, and this hitherto un- recorded fact sets in train a number of interesting speculations. For example, Holland is said to have been graduated m.d . about 1595, though no mention of it is made in the registers of Oxford or Cambridge Universities. This has led Sir Sidney Lee to surmise that the de- gree was probably conferred by a Scot- bethan translator and physician, Phile- tish or foreign university, a conjecture mon Holland, and am now engaged in which for several reasons I cannot ac- compiling a definitive bibliography of cept.     chapter 41 Imagining Marcus Aurelius in the Renaissance: Forgery, Fiction, and History in the Creation of the Imperial Ideal Thomas Dandelet From the earliest phase of the Italian Renaissance in the fourteenth century, reviving the memory, history, and writings of the Roman emperors was a cen- tral preoccupation of humanists who longed for a revival of Roman imperial culture and power. The long biography of Julius Caesar by Petrarch served as a foundation stone of this literary movement, and it was followed by numerous new editions of Caesar’s Commentaries. Figures such as Guarino Guarini championed Caesar as a model for new princes such as his patron Leonello d’Este, to whom he dedicated a new edition of the Commentaries, noting that the young prince was like a new Caesar.1 This was not a position shared by all humanists, as the spirited debate between Guarino and his republican contemporary from Florence Poggio Bracciolini amply demonstrated. While Poggio presented Caesar as a tyrant who destroyed republican liberty and shed the blood of many Romans, Guarino argued that he was one of the greatest military strategists and rulers who ever lived, as demonstrated by his many victories, writings, and the expansion of Roman power. Others, like Coluccio Salutati, took a more measured view of Caesar, acknowledging his virtues as a writer and military leader while criticiz- ing him for shedding Roman blood in the Civil Wars. Whatever the position, these authors and others such as Pius ii, who wrote his own Commentaries following the literary model of Caesar, could not resist focusing their attention on Caesar and his successors as they looked to the ancient Roman Empire for political models and wisdom in their own day.

As the preface to the Teseus-Romulus makes clear, Plutarch himself sees these mythological fgures as qualitatively different from his other biographical sub- jects, with the consequence that this particular pair of Lives serves as a limit case by which it is possible to elucidate the boundaries of Plutarch’s authorial identity. Tey present, moreover, a set of opportunities for him to demonstrate his ability to curate and present familiar material (the founding of Rome, Teseus in the labyrinth) in demonstration of his broad learning. To this end, I regard the Teseus-Romulus as a fundamentally integral text, both of whose parts should be read alongside one another and the rest of Plutarch’s corpus rather than as mere outgrowths of the tra- ditions about the early history of Athens and Rome, respectively.

    chapter 29 Taking Centre Stage: Plutarch and Shakespeare Miryana Dimitrova William Shakespeare (1564–1616) was familiar with various classical sources but it was Plutarch’s Lives of the noble Greeks and Romans that played a de- cisive role in the shaping of his Roman plays. The Elizabethan Julius Caesar (performed probably at the opening of the Globe theatre in 1599), and the Jacobean Antony and Cleopatra (c. 1606–1607) and Coriolanus (c. 1605–1610) are almost exclusively based on the Lives, while numerous other plays have been thematically influenced by the Plutarchan canon or include references to specific works. Although modern scholarship generally recognises Shakespeare’s knowl- edge of Latin (ultimately grounded in the playwright’s grammar school educa- tion, which included canonical texts in its curriculum) as well as French and Italian,1 it is widely accepted that he used Sir Thomas North’s translation of the Plutarch’s Lives. Ubiquitously dubbed “Shakespeare’s Plutarch”, its first edi- tion in the English vernacular appeared in 1579 and was followed by expanded editions in 1595 and 1603. North translated the Lives from the French version of Jacques Amyot, published in 1559 (see Frazier-Guerrier and Lucchesi in this volume). Shakespeare was also acquainted with the Moralia, possibly in its first English translation by Philemon Holland published in 1603, although a version entered in the Stationers Register in 1600 allows for a possible influence on Shakespeare’s earlier works.2 Shakespeare’s borrowings should be seen in the light of the fact that Plutarch’s Lives were admired in early modern England for their profound in- terest in the complexities of the human character and their didactic signifi- cance.

Gracias a la labor ahora emprendida por la Fundación Hernando de Larramendi queda dispuesta, por primera vez la edición digital completa de las obras del autor español que más influencia alcanzó durante el siglo XVI, el que por aquel entonces fue el más traducido y reeditado. Ya en junio de 1999 quedó dispuesta gracias a la magnífica labor de la Fundación Gustavo Bueno y al Proyecto de Filosofía en Español gran parte de sus obras. Esta labor fue continuada por la Universidad de Alicante a través del proyecto Cervantes Virtual, pero es sólo ahora cuando es posible que todo el mundo pueda disponer de forma libre y sencilla de las obras de este cántabro universal. La vida de Antonio de Guevara transcurre en las últimas décadas del siglo XV. La unidad política de España está a punto de asumir una nueva expresión a través del matrimonio de la princesa Isabel de Castilla y del príncipe Fernando de Aragón. El matrimonio no ha sido resultado del azar, o de un «capricho romántico». A Aragón, que después del auge económico del siglo XIII y principios del XIV atraviesa un periodo de decadencia demográfica (la peste de 1333, 1347, 1351) y económica (la competencia de Génova), le interesa la unión con Castilla, como único modo de librarse del cerco de Francia.
