Soldiers, civilians, and slaves listened to and performed popular songs almost constantly. The heightened political and emotional climate of the war created a need for Americans to express themselves in a variety of ways, and music was one of the best. It did not require a high level of literacy and it could be performed in groups to ensure that the ideas embedded in each song immediately reached a large audience. Previous studies of Civil War music have focused on the music itself. Historians and musicologists have examined the types of songs published during the war and considered how they reflected the popular mood of northerners and southerners. This study utilizes the letters, diaries, memoirs, and newspapers of the 1860s to delve deeper and determine what roles music played in Civil War America. This study begins by examining the explosion of professional and amateur music that accompanied the onset of the Civil War. Of the songs produced by this explosion, the most popular and resonant were those that addressed the political causes of the war and were adopted as the rallying cries of northerners and southerners. All classes of Americans used songs in a variety of ways, and this study specifically examines the role of music on the home-front, in the armies, and among African Americans.

The 3.5 inch floppy disks with neatly typed labels held about a dozen word-processing files representing the whole of Don E. Feh- renbacher’s Abraham Lincoln: A Documentary Portrait through His Speeches and Writings (1964). Donald had asked his secretary, Laura Nakatsuka, to enter this well-known col- lection of Lincoln writings into a computer and make copies for his students. He also showed off a database containing thousands of digital note cards that he and his research assistants had developed in preparation for his forthcoming biography of Lincoln.1 There were certainly bigger revolutions that year. The Berlin Wall fell. A motley coalition of Afghan tribes, international jihadists, and Central Intelligence Agency (cia) operatives drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Virginia voters chose the nation’s first elected black governor, and within a few more months, the Harvard Law Review selected a popular student named Barack Obama as its first African American president. Lee is undeniably one of the most revered figures in American history, and yet despite the adoration awarded to the man over the years, surprisingly little scholarly research has dedicated itself to an inquiry into his nationalistic leanings during the four most important years of his life—the Civil War. In fact, Lee was a dedicated Confederate nationalist during his time in service to the Confederacy, and he remained so for the rest of his life, even after his surrender at Appomattox and the taking of an oath to regain his United States citizenship. Lee identified strongly with a Southern view of antebellum events, and his time in the Confederate army hardened him to the notion that the only practical reason for waging the Civil War was the establishment of an independent Southern nation.

    -·-~• .}:}· ~- ·-.:: • r. • • i DECISION AT FORT SUMTER Prologue In 1846 Congressman JeffeLson Davis of Mississippi presented to the House of Representatives a resolution calling for the replace- ment of Federal troops in all coastal forts by state militia. The proposal died in committee and shortly thereafter Davis resigned from Congress to lead the red-shirted First Mississippi Rifles to war and (~~-ll glory in Mexico. Now it was the morning of April 10, 1861, and Davis was President of the newly proclaimed Confederate States of America. As he met with his cabinet in a Montgomery, Alabama hotel room he had good reason to regret the failure of that resolution of fifteen years ago. For had it passed, he would not have had to make the decision he was about to make: Order Brigadier General P. G. T. Beauregard, commander of Confederate forces at Charleston, South Carolina to demand the surrender of the Federal garrison on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. But before Davis made this decision, other men had made other decisions -- decisions which formed a trail leading to that Montgomery hotel room on the morning of April 10, 1861. The War Department'~cision In a sense the first of those decisions went back to 1829 when the War Department dumped tons of granite rubble brougi1t from New England on a c.andspit at the mouth of Charleston harbor. On the foundation so formed a fort named after the South Carolina r - 2 - Revolutionary War hero, Thomas Sumter, was built. However it was built very slowly, as Congress appropriated the needed money in driblets.

The Concord Community: Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Antislavery Movement Izumi OGURA* INTRODUCTION Traditional scholarship on Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–82) tends to focus on his representative works from the 1830s, such as Nature (1836), “The American Scholar” (1837), and “The Divinity School Address” (1838).1 Many scholars contend that as Emerson emphasized the “self- supplied powers of the individual,”2 he did not make explicit statements opposing slavery.3 George M. Fredrickson writes in The Inner Civil War (1965) that Emerson’s “detachment” and seclusion led him to remain aloof from society and politics and that it was not until the outbreak of the Civil War that he became “an infl uential and active citizen.”4 He says that Emerson’s egoistic self-reliance transformed him into a “useful citizen” as he got involved in the slavery argument and the Civil War.5 For Emerson, the question of slavery was the turning point in his acceptance of “collective feeling as the equivalent of individual intuition.”6 In Virtue’s Hero (1990), Len Gougeon leads the way in revising past negative interpretations of Emerson’s attitude toward society.     Background for Lincoln’s Cooper Union Address The Issue of Slavery in the Territories As the United States expanded in the first half of the 19th century and new states entered the Union, the status of slavery in the new territories and in the newly admitted states became the central issue of political debate. The formulation of the legislative branch in the US Constitution was designed specifically to protect the states from being out voted by the more populous northern free states. While seats in the House of Representatives are based on population, each state has two seats in the United States Senate. Consequently, as long as the number of slave states roughly equaled the number of free states, it would be impossible for the free states to have the necessary votes to ban slavery in all the new territories. Moreover, the Constitution requires two-thirds of each house to propose any amendment to the Constitution and two-thirds of all the states to ratify. Consequently, as long as one-third of the states were slave states, it would be impossible to pass a amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery. The United States expanded substantially, first by the Louisiana Purchase and then by the acquisition of California and what is now the southwestern United States in the Mexican- American War 1846-48. Most opponents of slavery opposed the Mexican-American War because they saw it as a war that would expand the number of slave states. During this period a number of compromises were made to admit states while placating Southern fears of a growing number of free states.

Founded by progressive thinker/abolitionist/inventor Peter Cooper, its doors were opened to all, regardless of race, religion, gender or social status. Its famous Great Hall has been a bastion of free speech and progressivism, presenting great minds, talents and the burning issues of the day. Lincoln’s anti-slavery “Right Makes Might” speech (2/27/1860), propelled him to the presidency. A 1909 speech by Clara Lemlich sparked the Uprising of the 20,000 shirtwaist workers. Other appearances include Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, Chief Red Cloud, Susan B. Anthony, Emma Goldman, Mother Jones, Nikola Tesla, Clarence Darrow, P.T. Barnum, William Randolph Hearst, Andrew Carnegie, W.E.B. DuBois, Bertrand Russell, Margaret Mead, Orson Welles, Allen Ginsberg, Billy Joel, Philip Glass, Stephen Colbert and Presidents Grant, Cleveland, Taft, T. Roosevelt, Wilson, Clinton, and Obama.
