Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART Violin Sonatas K305, 376 & 402

Alina Ibragimova, Cédric Tiberghien

The earliest music here dates from when Mozart was just six years old, the latest from his first years as a freelance composer resident in Vienna. The distinguished advocacy of Alina Ibragimova and Cédric Tiberghien, in a second volume of the complete violin sonatas, is equally persuasive in both.

CDA68092

Fin de siècle Music for viola and piano

Lawrence Power, Simon Crawford-Phillips

That the names of Hüe and Büsser are now largely forgotten is no reflection on their ability to write music which cannot fail to delight (and did not fail to win the Prix de Rome). Lawrence Power and Simon Crawford-Phillips present a wonderful recital which sets Ravel and Debussy in the context of their lesser-known contemporaries.

Highlight (1891-1953) of the month Symphonies Nos 4 (1947) & 7

Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Andrew Litton

There is nothing unusual about a composer returning to a major work, however, among such works Sergei Prokofiev’s Fourth Symphony is a unique case in that it exists in two such different versions that the composer considered them quite separate works, giving each its own opus number. Composed in 1929-30, the first version, Op. 47, met with lukewarm response at its Boston and European premières. In 1947 Prokofiev decided to return to the symphony, producing not so much a revision as a complete reworking of the original material. The differences between the versions are too many to detail, but the main point is that the 1947 version, given the opus number 112, is a much bigger and more ambitious score. Some four years later Prokofiev began work on what would become BIS2134 his last major work, Symphony No. 7 in C sharp minor. This is the third instalment in a Prokofiev cycle from Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Felix MENDELSSOHN (1809-1847) Quartet No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 44 No. 3; Quartet No. 6 in F minor, Op. 80; Capriccio in E minor & Fugue in E flat major from Four Pieces for , Op. 81 Escher String Quartet: Adam Barnett-Hart, Aaron Boyd, Pierre Lapointe, Dane Johansen

The Escher Quartet opened their traversal of Mendelssohn’s string quartets with the first and the fourth quartets, along with an unnumbered early work in E fat major, on a disc which the reviewer in The Strad summed up as a ‘deeply rewarding release … and by any standards a distinguished one’. The same magazine made the sequel – with the second and third quartets – its recommendation in the November issue of 2015. On the third and BIS2160 final disc in the series, time has come for the two last quartets, as well as the Capriccio and Fugue from the Op. 81 set of Four Pieces for String Quartet begun on the previous instalment.

Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) JS Bach – Secular Cantatas, Vol. 7 ‘Peasant Cantata’ Mer hahn en neue Oberkeet, BWV 212 (Cantate burlesque – ‘Peasant Cantata’); Non sa che sia dolore, BWV 209; Amore traditore, BWV 203 Bach Collegium Japan, Masaaki Suzuki Mojca Erdmann, Dominik Wörner (Mojca Erdmann appears on this recording courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon) The works on the seventh disc in Masaaki Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan’s series of J.S. Bach’s BIS2191 secular cantatas are quite special in the composer’s production. By far the best-known of them, the so-called ‘Peasant Cantata’ signals this both through its title (in Upper Saxon dialect) and subtitle (‘Cantate burlesque’). Composed for a celebration at a country estate outside Leipzig, the soloists in this duo cantata portray neither Roman gods nor allegorical figures but a peasant girl and a farm-hand. The Peasant Cantata is followed by the only two extant Bach cantatas that set Italian texts.

Meditatio – music for mixed choir James MACMILLAN: A Child’s Prayer; John TAVENER: The Lamb; Hugi GUÐMUNDSSON: Hvíld; Jón LEIFS: ; Morten LAURIDSEN: O nata lux; Eric WHITACRE: Lux aurumque; Þorkell SIGURBJÖRNSSON: Nú hverfur sól í haf; Heyr himna smiður; Sigurður SÆVARSSON: Nunc dimittis; Ēriks EŠENVALDS: O salutaris hostia; Anna ÞORVALDSDÓTTIR: Heyr þú oss himnum á; Hörður ÁSKELSSON: Hvíld; Hreiðar Ingi: Nunc dimittis; Arvo PÄRT: Nunc dimittis Schola cantorum, Hörður Áskelsson Growing out of concerts given by Schola cantorum Reykjavicensis and Hörður Áskelsson on All Soul’s Day, Meditatio presents a programme of expressive choral works which interpret grief and bereavement in the light of hope and comfort. Apart from Jón Leifs’ singularly serene Requiem, the composer’s response to the death BIS2200 of his daughter in 1947, all the pieces date from the past 35 years – from The Lamb by John Tavener from 1982 to Nunc dimittis (2015) by Sigurður Sævarsson, Icelandic composer as well as member of Schola cantorum. The ‘Canticle of Simeon’, as this song of praise from the Bible is also called, appears in two other settings on the disc – by Arvo Pärt and by Hreiðar Ingi who, like Sævarsson, sings bass in the choir.

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART La Clemenza di Tito Carlo Allemano, Nina Bernsteiner, Kate Aldrich, Ann-Beth Solvang, Dana Marbach, Marcell Bakonyi, Academia Montis Regalis, Alessandro Di Marchi During the early nineteenth century the new 1804 Viennese version of La Clemenza di Tito was Mozart’s most popular in Europe. However, in keeping with the practice during that period, it was performed in versions 777870-2 adapted to the times and the taste of the opera public. Here Alessandro De Marchi aims to present Tito in the form in which it was staged and acclaimed in great houses in the early years of the nineteenth century.

It was 555022-2 followed by two chamber compositions; the String Quartet in F major (the ‘American Quartet’) and later by the Piano Quintet in E fat major recorded here. While the quartet numbers among Dvořák’s most popular works, the quintet – also because of its form – is largely unknown. The composer himself termed these two compositions his ‘best and most original’ works.

Francis POULENC (1899-1963) Babar Stefan Wilkening, Julien Thorel, Norman Shetler, Eva-Maria May, Alexander Wienand

George ANTHEIL Bad Boy of Music

Gottlieb Wallisch, Christopher Roth, Karl Markovics

Antheil’s approach to piano playing is extremely physical: repeatedly, he compares his work with that of a PMR0075 boxer, and describes how he cools his swollen hands in two goldfish bowls. On this brilliant recording you can hear some of his most interesting compositions.

As the focal point of his organ oeuvre, the Chorale Fantasias, along with the Twelve Organ Pieces, are a testament to the virtuosity and compositional diversity of Max Reger, which Ulfert Smidt, organist at the Marktkirche in Hannover, performs with perfection on the stunning Goll organ.

In so doing, the generation of the 80s produced an important repertoire of symphonic, instrumental and vocal chamber music.

Giacinto SCELSI, Biagio PUTIGNANO, Davide ANZAGHI Piano Works Giusy Caruso TC 930001 The concert project entitled ‘In the Sphere of Sound as Crossroad of Cultures’ wants to draw a semantic and aesthetic musical path based on the investigation of timbres carried out by Italian contemporary composers from Giacinto Scelsi to Davide Anzaghi and Biagio Putignano. Sentirete una canzonetta Musical ‘Affetti’ of the Renaissance and Baroque periods In Tabernæ Musica The musical content of this CD presents a cross-section of the typical aesthetic features and expressions that were TC 580002 most appreciated by the public during late Renaissance and early Baroque Italy. The idea of the opposition between thesis and antithesis became the driving force of an astonishing creativeness. Ciaccone, Passacaglie, Canzonette, Villanelle and various dances were the synthesis of an ardent, sparkling musical and social energy.

Stephen DODGSON (1924-2013) Complete Music for Cello and Piano Evva Mizerska, Emma Abbate The cello works of the London-born Stephen Dodgson present the musical personality of this much-loved composer in a nutshell. The style is direct but rich in allusion, from hints of English folksong to Purcellian dignity, with a TOCC0353 lively, sometimes brittle, sense of humour adding a Shostakovichian irony.

Hans GAL (1890-1987) Chamber Music for Clarinet Ensemble Burletta TOCC0377 Like Brahms and Reger, Hans Gál expressed some of his last musical thoughts in the form of a Clarinet Quintet, this one written when its composer was 87 years old. The earlier works here – the Serenade written in Vienna between Gál’s expulsion from Nazi Germany and his fight after the Anschluss, and the Trio, composed in his new home of Edinburgh – reveal that its elegiac, autumnal lyricism was his natural mode of expression.

PHILIP GLASS (b. 1937) Glassworlds, Vol. 5 - Enlightenment Mad Rush; Metamorphosis Ii; 600 Lines; The Sound Of Silence Nicolas Horvath The works in this programme demonstrate Philip Glass’s perpetual goal of connecting with his audience. Taking shape as GP745 something like a hidden sonata form, Mad Rush contrasts peaceful atmosphere with tempestuousness and mesmerizing beauty. The last of its kind in Glass’s oeuvre, 600 Lines, here receiving its première recording on solo piano, is an obsessive and hypnotically restless toccata that represents the zenith of his experiences while working with Ravi Shankar. The Humoresque in D major reveals his virtuosic fair whilst the Dumka in E fat minor uses improvisational elements to evoke the Russian landscape and the timelessness of village life. The Sonatina in G major was Balakirev’s last completed work and a joyous finale to a richly creative life.
