PUERTO RICO Originally called Borinquén, Puerto Rico was first discovered in 1493. The first settlement was established in 1508. Through 1526 it was under the jurisdiction of the Viceroyalty of Santo Domingo. In 1527 it was placed under the Viceroyalty or Audiencia of Nueva España. Following the Spanish-American war in 1898 it became a U.S. territory. Principal records on FamilySearch include civil registration, Catholic Church records, census records, and much more. Puerto Rico is included in the U.S. Federal Census beginning in 1910. There was a special census taken in 1935. There are also several other censuses which can be located using Census records for Latin America and the Hispanic United States by Lyman D. Platt.
