Race and ethnicity are all around us, and Part I of this paper aims to clarify these concepts and our approach to studying them in the ancient Roman world. By analyzing Roman literary accounts in Part II, it is hoped that such light will be said, as Coates encourages. Lastly, by tracing observations across time in Part III, evidence is put into perspective in order to gain an idea of the racial system at play in ancient Roman society. Objectives This study concerns itself with perceptions of race in ancient Roman ideology. There a two essential ways in which the term “race”2 is used in the English language. In the first, “race” is an ideological construct according to which humans categorize each other, as seen in the sentence “race remains a pervasive force in Western society.” This usage refers to an abstract concept of differentiating groups of people. The second way is as a classifying term used in the modern day to denote a level of this construct, as seen in the sentence “as what race do you identify?” This usage refers to a specific label within the larger ideological 1 Rodney Coates, Race and Ethnicity Across Time, Space and Discipline (Boston: Brill, 2004), 1-4. 2 In the identity sense, not the competition sense. 1 construct of difference. In this paper, I analyze race in the former sense, exploring the cultural conceptualization of racial difference in the ancient Roman perspective. Accordingly, my goal is not to delineate the so-called “races” in the Roman Empire, for this application of the term (an example of the latter usage) would require me to anachronistically apply a modern level of identity “race” onto the ancient Roman construct. This label would connote modern concern for skin color along with many other factors inappropriate to the Roman racial scene. Furthermore, it would bias our modern understanding to mirror a modern one. Rather than produce such an anachronistic and therefore misleading list, I seek to discern what levels of identity Romans did employ in their ideological construct of racial categorization. No doubt exacerbated by the above ambiguity of the word, “race” is an immensely controversial term in scholarly discourse on the ancient Mediterranean, one from which many shy. Indeed, a number of scholars deny its very applicability to the ancient world.3 Some denounce its use as a concept at all.4 Conversely, yet others offer staunch views of classical antiquity as

However, Mela departs from the traditional ancient concept by asserting that in the southern temperate zone dwelt inhabitants who were inaccessible to Europeans because of the Torrid Zone that intervened. His knowledge of the characters of Western Europe and the British Isles was clearer than that of the Greek writers, and he was the first to name the Orcades [Orkney Islands]. The great Roman historian Pliny quoted Mela as an authority. The first-century author Pomponius Mela enjoyed a long- standing reputation in geographical matters, given Pliny’s praise of him in the Natural History. But no text by Mela was known until the 1330s, when Petrarch discovered his De chorographia [On Chorography, or Descriptive Geography] in Avignon. Mela did not include a map in his text, but it has been suggested that he had in mind the map of the known world that Agrippa (#118) had started and Augustus completed. Displayed in the Porticus Vipsania in Rome, this map was known as chorographia, a name possibly recalled by the title of Mela’s text. Petrarch was fascinated with Mela’s brief and engaging text and had copies made for fellow humanists, including Giovanni Boccaccio, facilitating the wide circulation of the manuscript for almost a century, until it was printed in Milan in 1471.

    ROMANIZATION AND SOME CILICIAN CULTS By HUGH ELTON (BIAA) This paper focuses on two sites from central Cilicia in Anatolia, the Cory­ cian Cave and Kanhdivane, to make some comments about religion and Romanization. From the Corycian Cave, a pair of early third-century AD altars are dedicated to Zeus Korykios, described as Victorious (Epinikios), Triumphant (Tropaiuchos), and the Harvester (Epikarpios), and to Hermes Korykios, also Victorious, Triumphant, and the Harvester. The altars were erected for 'the fruitfulness and brotherly love of the Augusti', suggesting they come from the period before Geta's murder, i.e. between AD 209 and 212. 1 These altars are unremarkable and similar examples are common else­ where, so these altars can be interpreted as showing the homogenising effect of the Roman Empire. But behind these dedications, however, may lie a re­ ligious tradition stretching back to the second millennium BC. At the second site, Kanhdivane, a tomb in the west necropolis was accompanied by a fu­ nerary inscription erected by Marcus Ulpius Knos for himself and his family, probably in the second century AD. Marcus then added, 'but if anyone damages or opens [the tomb] let him pay to the treasury of Zeus 1000 [de­ narii] and to the Moon (Selene) and to the Sun (Helios) above 1000 [denarii] and let him be subject to the curses also of the Underground Gods (Kata­ chthoniai Theoi). ' 2 When he wanted to threaten retribution, Knos turned to a local group of gods. As at the Corycian Cave, Knos' actions may preserve traces of pre-Roman practices, though within a Roman framework.

As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes.

    VOICES OF THE ENEMY: ORATIO RECTA AND ORATIO OBLIQUA IN CAESAR’S DE BELLO GALLICO by RANDY FIELDS (Under the Direction of James C. Anderson, jr.) ABSTRACT According to his contemporaries and critics, Julius Caesar was an eminent orator. Despite the lack of any extant orations written by Caesar, however, one may gain insight into Caesar’s rhetorical ability in his highly literary commentaries, especially the De Bello Gallico. Throughout this work, Caesar employs oratio obliqua (and less frequently oratio recta) to animate his characters and give them “voices.” Moreover, the individuals to whom he most frequently assigns such vivid speeches are his opponents. By endowing his adversaries in his Commentarii with the power of speech (with exquisite rhetorical form, no less), Caesar develops consistent characterizations throughout the work. Consequently, the portrait of self-assured, unification-minded Gauls emerges. Serving as foils to Caesar’s own character, these Gauls sharpen the contrast between themselves and Caesar and therefore serve to elevate Caesar’s status in the minds of his reader. For example, unlike Plato, we can etymologize many Ancient Greek words. Perhaps we even understand a few lines of skaldic poetry better than did Snorri. But berserkir (whom, to simplify matters, I will call berserkers, as is done in English dictionaries) fared badly. The Vikings’ contemporaries had lost all memory of berserkers’ identity. In the 13th century, berserkers reemerged in the sagas as society’s dangerous outcasts and soon disappeared without a trace until medievalists revived them in their works. The berserker-related boom is now behind us, but an impressive bibliography of the subject testifies to scholarship devoid of a factual base and feeding mainly on itself.

And to say nothing of the perils of that wild and unknown sea, who compile an ethnographic and geographical description of Germania would have been likely to leave Asia Minor, North Africa, or Italy, to go to (which includes parts of present-day France and Germany), especially the Germany with its forbidding landscapes and unpleasant climate - a country customs and culture of the various tribes who lived there, whom the Romans generally called “barbarians.”1 that is thankless to till and dismal to behold for anyone who was not born 1.

    Some Greek Evidence for Indo-European Youth Contingents of Shape Shifters Reyes Bertolín Cebrián University of Calgary [email protected] Artistic evidence, legends and anecdotes in Greece seem to reflect very archaic ways of fighting, remnants of IE youth contingents covered in skins, lightly armed, and inspiring terror. Although these troops had largely disappeared from the written sources in archaic and classical times, there are enough indications to suggest that they operated past Iliadic times, even if they were no longer well understood. Shape shifting warriors are known from several IE cultures. Scholars assume that there were probably two types of shape shifters. On the one hand there was a “consecrated” warrior,1 and on the other hand there were contingents of young adolescent men, who fought for a period of time as shape shifters before they were integrated into the productive structure of their societies (Kershaw 2000: 63). In a seminal work, Kim McCone identified the contingents of young marauding men in several IE cultures. He established a distinction between them and the organized troops of property owning citizens (*teutá) (McCone 1987: 111). These young men gathered in the so-called IE *koryos. Members of the *koryos spent their time in the theft of cattle and women, activities which constitute the themes of most IE epics. The earlier date corresponds to expansion of Rome to the Rhine and Danube. During the subsequent century Germanic governance institutions changed in a number of ways. In particular, (1) temporary military commanders elected from the nobility gave way to standing retinues under the leadership of professional commanders, (2) public assemblies met more frequently and regularly, (3) councils made up of nobility gained agenda control in the assemblies, and (4) these councils relinquished their control over the allocations of land. I account for these constitutional exchanges in light of Rome’s encroachment upon Germania. In particular, it brought new sources of wealth and also constraints on the expansion of Germans into new lands. Incentives favored a reallocation of resources away from pastoralism and towards both sedentary farming and raids across the frontier.
