It focuses on the portrayal of the shifting faces of communitarian identity/politics by analyzing two digital versions of this historical event – one is Mehreen Jabbar's drama-film Ramchand Pakistani and the other is the adapted version of Razia Butt's novel Bano, broadcast by a private T.V Channel with the title of Dastaan. Based on the postmodernist shift from performance to performance, our argument foregrounds the digital representation of 1947 which offers new angles to view the subaltern story(ies) vis-à-vis the official history of nationalism by showing different characters who experience a fleeing sense of identity in their attempt to cope with the trauma of displacement and violence during 1947. In this article, the textual and digital versions of 1947 are read as cultural texts which embody the human and subjective experience and perceptions of ordinary human subjects from both sides of the divide, either during the historical event of Partition as sufferers or survivors or in current scenario in the wake of the politics of mistrust between Pakistan and India.

At a café a Pakistani man named Changez (Riz Ahmed) tells Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking his fortune on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Kate Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica. Changez’s dream soon begins to slip into nightmare: he is transformed from a well-educated, upwardly mobile businessman to a scapegoat and perceived enemy. Taking us through the culturally rich and beguiling worlds of New York, Lahore and Istanbul, The Reluctant Fundamentalist is a story about conflicting ideologies where perception and suspicion have the power to determine life or death. A MULTI-LAYERED VISION “Looks can be deceiving.” Changez Khan “An Indian director making a film about a Pakistani man. That’s not an easy thing to do,” says novelist and co-screenwriter Mohsin Hamid of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, the new film from award-winning filmmaker Mira Nair, based on Hamid’s acclaimed novel of the same name.

On a historic backdrop, gender roles and stereotypes are embedded in culture and religions of the sub-continent. This research study investigates gender roles and stereotypes in modern-day Pakistan, which was created in 1947 as a result of the partition of British India. Inspiration for this thesis is drawn from personal life experiences and the complex evolution of gender roles in the country.

Naaree Interviews Nandita Das February 2013 An Interview with Actor And Director, Nandita Das By Swarnendu Biswas © Naaree.com www.naaree.com Page 1 Naaree Interviews Nandita Das February 2013 Her razor-sharp intellect and uncommon sensitivity towards social issues complement her enchanting beauty and compelling aesthetic talent. But while talking to Nandita Das it was very difficult to comprehend the gravity of the fact that I was conversing with a world-renowned actress and director, for she lets the weight of her astonishing achievements and enviable fame sit lightly on her slim, elegant and strong shoulders. Her unassuming and easy going personality belies the fact that she is one of the most critically acclaimed actresses of serious Indian cinema of our times, and also the fact that her maiden directorial effort has made the world of cinema to sit up and recognise the arrival of a new cinematic genius from India; a country whose film repertoire is even now by and large perceived by overtly melodramatic and utterly mediocre mainstream Bollywood fare. Casually Famous Even the immense significance of the fact that the French Government had conferred her with the Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), one of the most prestigious civilian awards in the world, in 2008, for her contribution to art and culture, hasn’t infused any hint of arrogance into her friendly personality. In this context, it also deserves a mention here that, in 2011, Nandita became the first Indian to be inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Women’s Forum.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Whenever we set out on our individual journeys—professional or personal—we ultimately make it to the other end because others assist us along the way. Some of this help comes from people we know, and some from strangers in the most unexpected ways. It is impossible to thank everyone who played a part in helping me conceptualize and carry out this project because so much of the support I have gotten over the years has been behind the scenes, so to speak. Before all else, I am grateful to God for making paths appear, for creating ease, and for guiding me along the way. A big thank you to my advisor, Karin Wilkins—I could not have done this without your encouragement, inspiration, and input. By reading your work and taking your class, I found a space for my work and was reminded that it mattered.
