To Rachel, with love and gratitude Preface This book represents a slightly revised version of my doctoral dissertation in New Testament Studies, which I completed at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey, under the title, The Origins and Rhetorical Force of the Lamb Christology of the Apocalypse of John. Having come to this point in my journey with this research project, I am quite aware of the ways in which I have benefited from the communities of which I have been a part and from individuals who have read and critiqued what I have written here. This project would not have been possible without the benefits I have reaped from the work of many other people. Three people whose work in the Apocalypse of John were formative for me early on were Howard Charles, Ted Grimsrud, and William Klassen. I took an undergraduate course in the Apocalypse of John with Dr. Charles at Goshen College. He taught me to be honest with the text within the confines of the subjectivity with which we all must work—to work inductively without forcing preconceived ideas on the text or predetermining a hermeneutical outcome. His deliberate and thoughtful approach also lessened my fear of this book. Later, as theology book editor for Herald Press, I edited Ted Grimsrud's book, Triumph of the Lamb (1987), a helpful study guide intended for laypersons and church groups. His study excited me about this book and convinced me that there was potential in reading the Apocalypse ethically. Finally, I found several conversations with William Klassen to be helpful as I began to work with this project. Dr. Klassen provided key bibliographical help and pointed me in helpful directions. The late Dr. J. Christiaan Beker pressed me early in this project to pay attention to the overall structure and design of this dissertation in order to maintain a healthy sense of the parts within the whole and the flow of the argument.     Before the Assyrian Conquest in 671 B.C.E.: Relations between Egypt, Kush and Assyria* Silvie Zamazalová INTRODUCTION In 701 B.C.E., the Neo-Assyrian king Sennacherib (r. 704–681 B.C.E.) fought a battle against an anti-Assyrian coalition of Philistine city-states1 and their allies at Eltekeh, probably located north of the city of Ashdod (Kitchen 19862: 385 n. 815). The coalition was supported by Egyptian and Kushite forces, dispatched by the Kushite ruler Shebitku as a response to Philistia’s plea for help. An inscription of Sennacherib describes the encounter as follows: “They (i.e. Ekron and its allies) got help from the kings of Egypt, troops, archers, chariots and cavalry of the king of Nubia, a force without number... In the vicinity of Eltekeh, battle lines were drawn in front of me... With the help of Aššur, my lord, I fought with them and brought about their defeat. The charioteers and princes of Egypt, together with the charioteers of the king of Nubia, my hands took alive in the midst of battle...” (Melville 2006: 346) While the exact nature of the battle’s outcome is a matter of debate,2 it marked an important watershed in the relations between Assyria and Egypt/Kush. Egypt- ian involvement in Philistine affairs was not without precedent, but Shebitku’s open and unambiguous opposition to Assyria was new, as was as his ability to subjugate the Delta chieftains (the “kings of Egypt” referred to by Sennacherib) and thus create a relatively united political front (Redford 2004: 91). The confronta- tion at Eltekeh signalled openly hostile relations (Kitchen 19862: 155, §126) which would eventually culminate in Egypt’s conquest, and temporary integration into Assyria’s impressive empire, by Sennacherib’s successor Esarhaddon (r.

In genealogy, we can well claim that Egypt has given us the gift of the earliest ancestral history thanks to its hieroglyphs and other sources now readily available via Internet. There are several sources connecting us to Egyptian ancestors but I have here picked one, listed first, “Byzantine Emperors”, which ties together several of our other ancestral lineages, which I have described in other books. This one lists our ancestors from a most recent (generation 1) to the earliest (generation 87). This sequence is different from most computer genealogy reports which list the lineages from to earliest person to the present. Besides the information in this list, I have gone further back in time using Wikipedia and some other Internet sources. In my lineage list, shown next, I have those of our ancestors highlighted, for which additional information has been provided in the main text. This list ends with Neithiyti Princess of Egypt (81st great grandmother). She was married to Cyrus II the Great King of Persia, our ancestor listed in the Persian Royal Ancestry. Another list is included and ends with the famous Cleopatra and the end of the Egyptian empire as it then became part of the Roman Empire as shown in Roman Early Ancestry. This time period is included in the 1945 novel by Mika Waltari, titled The Egyptian, which is set during the reign of 18th dynasty pharaoh Akhenaten.

    Late-Egyptian Chronology and the Hebrew Monarchy Critical Studies in Old Testament Mythology, I K. A. KITCHEN University of Liverpool In modern times, but at varying intervals, much scholarly attention has been devoted to the respective chronologies of Late-Period Egypt and the Hebrew Monarchy. A salient feature is that Kings and Chronicles contain a running series of datelines and data from which modern scholars can derive a chronology of the Hebrew Monarchy which, today, varies only within quite narrow limits1 -while from roughly 110011070 B.C., Late-Period Egypt before the Saites (that is, to 664 B.C.) appears, in contrast, as a period of obscurity, even confusion, with rival lines of little-known kings and seemingly very uncertain dates. However, by patiently collect­ ing, sifting, and setting in order not merely a handful of regnal dates from the monuments and Manetho, liberally sprinkled with conjecture, but a whole range of evidence (regnal dates; Manetho; genealogies of officials; Apis-bulls; changes in dating; etc.), it is possible to bring relatively close and coherent order into the entire epoch, and even to set quite narrow limits for the dates of its kings (21st to 25th Dynasties), the contemporaries of the Hebrew Monarchy. This task, the writer has attempted in some detail elsewhere;2 but it may be of service here to set out clearly and separately for biblical scholars some salient aspects having especial reference to Old Testament history that are even yet not properly grasped, despite warnings on the subject. [n particular, Old Testament scholars are sometimes prone to elevating theories into dogmas, and, even after conrrary facts have been made plain, are loth to give up their cherished idols and associated mythologies.

Noting that the ancestor of the line discussed, Ezra, is in some way a relative of Caleb, who was a companion of Joshua, and that Mered’s grandsons were named as founders of the cities of Gedor, Socor and Zanoah, he argues that Mered must be dated to the 12/11th centuries BC. On this basis, he suggests that Bithiah was a D20 (20th Dynasty) princess Bint–Anath, perhaps a [grand]daughter of Ramses III. FWIW there is at least one known case of an Egyptian princess, Nebetia daughter of the king’s son SiAtum, who was almost certainly a king’s granddaughter (likely, of Amenhotep III), bearing the title s3t nsw—“king’s daughter”—probably indicating that she was born in the lifetime of her grandfather.

With her utmost nice nature, there are also traits from her that are seen as foolish because of her speeches and conducts further exaggerating it. Recognizing nothing but heavenly beauty.

    Aspects of Ancient Near Eastern Chronology (c. 1600 – 700 BC) Pierce James Furlong Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2007 Centre for Classics and Archaeology The University of Melbourne © Pierce J Furlong, 2007 Abstract There can be no more important topic in historical studies than chronology, for it is chronology which gives meaning to history by placing individuals, events and material remains within their true sequence. If this sequence does not match historical actuality, then, the historical narrative drawn from the available evidence may appear confused, incomplete or even contradictory. The history of the Near East is bound together by an accurate and continuous absolute chronology which stretches back to the early first millennium BC. However, beyond that point in time we are forced to rely upon relative chronologies for the histories of the Great Kingdoms of Egypt, Babylonia, Assyria and Hatti, amongst others. Scholars have pieced together these relative chronologies over the last one-two centuries using information from King-lists, royal annals and administrative documents. The end result of this major enterprise is, today, what can best be described as an extremely complex but little understood jigsaw puzzle composed of a multiplicity of loosely connected data. Moreover, many of the pieces of this puzzle are missing. For example, while the relative chronology of the Egyptian New Kingdom (18th-20th Dynasties) is fairly well established, it is separated from the absolute chronology of the 7th century BC Saite Dynasty by the chronologically indeterminate and confused Third Intermediate Period (21st-25th Dynasties).
