Publication / Book for the exhibition Published by Bertz + Fischer Verlag

Hildegard Knef (28 December 1925 – 1 February 2002) was an actress of the stage and screen, as well as a singer, painter and book author. She lived in Europe and the USA, and starred in films made in France, Italy, England, Germany and . She performed in musicals on Broadway, toured concert halls and theaters, and received awards from many countries. Celebrated by her admirers for her many talents, ridiculed by her critics, Hildegard Knef had to work most of her life. To do so she used the media just as they were to use her, at first profiting from her controversial reputation, later from her great popularity.

This book, which is rich in illustrations, has been published in honour of what would have been Hildegard Knef’s 80th birthday. It includes previously unobtainable material and photos from her estate. It explores in detail the many facets of her work and life, her triumphs and failures, changes in identity and media images, as well as how she was perceived by the public. The book also reveals the complex relationship between Knef’s life and cultural, political, educational and social developments in the Federal Republic of Germany. There is a foreword by Hans Helmut Prinzler, essays by Kristina Jaspers, Klaus Kreimeier, Peter Mänz, Felix Moeller, Iris Radisch, Daniela Sannwald, Christian Schröder, Werner Sudendorf, Vera Thomas and Nils Warnecke; a photo series by Ulrich Mack and Ingo Taubhorn; as well as contributions by Karlheinz Böhm, Till Brönner, David Cameron, Christina Gardiner, Ralph Giordano, F. C. Gundlach, Kai Havaii, Oswalt Kolle, Volker Lechtenbrink, Günter Noris, Helma Sanders-Brahms, Walter Scheel, Paul von Schell, Roger Willemsen and Klaus Wowereit.

Exhibition / A brief biography

»Hildegard Knef. An Artist from Germany« is the title and theme of the exhibition. Hildegard Knef was born in Germany, but was a German citizen for only a few years of her life. Nevertheless, she was usually considered a German abroad. Her career was not only closely connected with the post-war years, and to the history of culture and media in the Federal Republic of Germany, but also with the local history of Berlin. As actress, singer, author, welcome talk-show guest and object of the press, Hildegard Knef retained a high and controversial profile for more than six decades.

Exhibition / The five rooms

Room 1 A Star is Born

Hildegard Knef began her career on April 1, 1942 with an apprenticeship as a cartoon animator at Ufa (Universum Film AG). Although she switched to acting instruction as early as September 1, 1943, she never forgot her beginnings and continued to draw and paint for most of her life. In 1943 Hildegard Knef was recruited, like many other of her colleagues, to look after the troops. In 1944 she played an ambitious and aspiring theater star in a practice film with the programmatic title SCHAUSPIELSCHULE [Acting School]. In the same year, she also made brief appearances in Helmut Käutner’s film UNTER DEN BRÜCKEN (Under the Bridges) and in Erich Engel’s FAHRT INS GLÜCK [Journey to Happiness]; though both films were premiered only after the war was over.

In the Ruins of Berlin in June 1945, shortly after Germany’s capitulation, Hildegard Knef began performing on the stage of the reopened Tribüne in Berlin, and by November she was a member of the ’s Schlossparktheater company. Nevertheless, it was with her role as Susanne – a prisoner released from a concentration camp in DIE MÖRDER SIND UNTER UNS (Murderers Among Us), which Wolfgang Staudte filmed under Russian license in May 1946 – that Hildegard Knef caused a sensation. With her flat, makeup-less face, her agility and hesitant way of speaking, she differed from earlier Ufa stars. Knef quickly advanced to become a bold representative of the new Germany – a country that was bomb-shattered, but resolute to achieve democracy. She played two further leading roles in “Trümmerfilme” (“rubble films”): in 1947 in Harald Braun’s ZWISCHEN GESTERN UND MORGEN (Between Yesterday and Tomorrow) and in 1948 in Rudolf Jugert’s FILM OHNE TITEl (Film Without a Name). Knef missed the latter’s premiere in January 1948, because she was already on her way to the USA – with her freshly wedded husband Kurt Hirsch and prospects of a film contract with David O. Selznick.

Room 2 To New Shores

Between 1948 and 1956, Hildegard Knef’s career was determined by three longer stays in the USA. The married couple Knef-Hirsch moved to Hollywood in March 1948, where they socialized with émigrés and met Billy Wilder, Marlene Dietrich and Fritz Lang. Additionally, Hildegard Knef took English lessons, was continually restyled by makeup artists and costume designers into new types, was brought into the limelight by studio photographers and introduced to the public by press spokespersons. Nevertheless, concrete role offers did not materialize. Still, Knef took on American citizenship in 1950, while one fatherly friend, the returned emigrant and producer Eric Pommer made efforts to build her career in Germany.

www.filmmuseum-berlin.de Success in Hollywood

Hildegard Knef finally received her chance in Hollywood in 1951, following the outrageous box office success of the DIE SÜNDERIN (The Sinner) in Germany. She played in DECISION BEFORE DAWN, directed by and filmed in Germany in 1951; and shortly thereafter she stood before the camera next to Tyrone Power in DIPLOMATIC COURIER and Gregory Peck in THE SNOWS OF KILIMANJARO. However, she received such tempting film offers from Germany that she left Hollywood following a further film for 20th Century Fox.

Broadway’s Calling

In 1954 Hildegard Knef was asked to play a leading role on Broadway. In “Silk Stockings,” the musical version of Ernst Lubitsch’s film , she was to follow in the footsteps of , playing, singing and dancing as a Russian commissar, who falls victim to the lure of capitalism. Following marathon rehearsals and performances in the provinces, the musical was ultimately premiered at the Imperial Theatre on February 24, 1955. Hildegarde Knef became the talk of the town and would deliver hundreds of performances before April 1956.

Room 3 An International Career

DIE SÜNDERIN (The Sinner) had its premiere on January 18, 1951. Directed by Willi Forst, Hildegard Knef played a prostitute, who falls in love with a painter who is going blind, and with whom she commits suicide in the end. In a scene that lasts only a few seconds, she poses as a nude model, but that was enough for the press to use the film title synonymously with the young actress from that point on, continually recalling her nude scene and making a marginal sequence the emblem of the film. Despite massive protests by the , more than three million viewers saw DIE SÜNDERIN. As a result, Hildegard Knef was offered film roles throughout Europe.

On the Road

From 1951 to 1954, Knef shot 13 films, dashing back and forth between German, American, British and French sets. The “rubble girl” had become a woman who had made it: still girlishly coquettish in Rudolf Jugert’s NACHTS AUF DEN STRASSEN (Night Without Sleep) and in ILLUSION IN MOLL, elegant in Carol Reed’s THE MAN BETWEEN, frivolous in Arthur Maria Rabenalt’s ALRAUNE (Unnatural, aka Mandrake) and boyishly pragmatic in André Michel’s GESTÄNDNIS UNTER VIER AUGEN (Confession under Four Eyes). Hildegard Knef was not typecast. Instead, her work was always highly professional, maintaining the same concentration and precision, even in her weaker films. Following her return from Hollywood in 1957, she was unquestionably celebrated as the star of the newly founded Ufa, but despite this fact she received very few offers for film roles – in part due to the increasing popularity of television and the resulting crisis that came about for the film industry. Consequently, at the beginning of the 1960s she began a theater tour.

www.filmmuseum-berlin.de Room 4 At the Height of Fame

In 1962 Hildegard Knef married the Briton David Cameron Palastanga. Privately, she was happy; her career, on the other hand, was in a crisis. Only occasionally were decent roles offered to her – as in Alfred Weidenmann’s film DAS GROSSE LIEBESSPIEL (And So to Bed). She began to write on the side: short texts and everyday observations, often in poetic form, which would later become chansons. This reminded Knef that she could sing. In PORTRAIT IN MUSIK, by television pioneer Truck Branss, she appeared in a show mixing theater and song. Today, these ambitious productions seem almost like precursors to video clips.

On Tour

Hildegard Knef reached a large audience through television, but she also wanted to experience the public live. In 1966, she was ready: she went on her first tour with the Günter Noris Quintet. David Cameron was always by her side, as adviser, impresario and coach. A second tour took place in 1968, this time with the Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra. The auditoriums were sold out and were followed by countless record recordings. Her songs, initially composed by Charly Niessen and Gerd Wilden, later by Hans Hammerschmid, such as “Ich brauch’ kein Venedig,” “Berlin, dein Gesicht hat Sommersprossen” and “Für mich soll’s rote Rosen regnen,” became hits that reached the top of the charts. Her songs were to become household titles.

Beautiful, Rich, Famous

David Cameron and Hildegard Knef belonged to the European jet set, were celebrated by the press, and the Parisian fashion designer, Pierre Balmain, was made responsible for Hildegard Knef’s look. When their daughter Christina was born in 1968, their happiness seemed complete, and Hildegard Knef used the time away from appearances after her birth to complete an autobiographical novel. Shortly after “Der geschenkte Gaul” (“The Gift Horse”) was published in German in 1970, it topped the bestseller list.

Room 5 Crisis and Renewed Happiness

Following the sensational success of “Der geschenkte Gaul” (“The Gift Horse”) with both the critics and the public in and outside of Germany, Hildegard Knef was diagnosed with cancer, had to undergo several difficult operations, and the relationship with her husband was in ruins. Afterwards, she began to write again. “Das Urteil” (“The Verdict”), published in German in 1975, is a deeply moving document of her experiences with the inhuman workings of hospitals. It appeared right before Hildegard Knef’s divorce from David Cameron. Shortly thereafter, Knef starred in one of the best roles of her career, in Alfred Vohrer’s JEDER STIRBT FÜR SICH ALLEIN (Everyone Dies in His Own Company).

New Beginnings

Exhausted by illness, the abuse of medications and divorce, Hildegard Knef moved from Austria back to Berlin. In 1977 she married Paul von Schell and wrote her third autobiographical novel “So nicht” [Not This Way] in which she also confronted the tragic fate of her stepbrother Heinz Wulfestieg. The press, however, was at her heels as usual. Hildegard Knef and Paul von Schell fled to the USA, and from 1982 to 1989 led a reclusive life in Los Angeles. Knef began to paint once again. A series of colourful oil paintings came about entitled “Los Angeles – Eindrücke zwischen Armut und Reichtum” (“Los Angeles – Impressions of Poverty and Affluence”). www.filmmuseum-berlin.de After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hildegard Knef returned to the city that was actually her hometown. She was warmly welcomed once again. Knef was a guest of innumerable talk shows and was honoured with a deluge of awards. At the end of her career, she recorded chansons once again, this time with a new generation of musicians, which made her accessible to a younger group of fans. Hildegard Knef’s songs inspire a large and diverse public even today: both homosexuals and heterosexuals of all ages, levels of education and social standing admire her as a true German diva.
