For all other instruments we used the abbreviations contained in the list following this foreword. The number placed before a title means that the composition is on sale as described. Otherwise, the following abbreviations will be found: MAT. N.: material on hire MAT. V.: material on sale (minimum strings parts: 3.3.2.2.1.) MAT.: material having a non-traditional distribution. Its supply has to be agreed upon with the publisher P. V.: large or medium score on sale P. : the score will be supplied with the hire material or on perusal p. V.: pocket score on sale Rid. N. will be obviously delivered on hire with the score. The absence of indications concerning the first performance means that the publisher did not receive any information on it. – – – – – – – – – – – – The title is also followed by the duration of the composition. Some works being aleatory we put the figure «al.», the timing being determined by the performer. • Sardinian Composers of Contemporary Music
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 12,2012 © PTPN & Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2012 CONSUELO GIGLIO Music Conservatory, Trapani Sardinian composers of contemporary music ABSTRACT: The meeting point between the school headed by Franco Oppo and the rich traditional music of the island gave birth in Sardinia to an intense flowering in the field of New Music, with a strong feeling of belonging and a constant call for a positive concept of identity. Thus, since the time of Oppo (1935) and his contemporary Vittorio Montis, we come across many composers that differ between each other but are almost always recognizably “Sardinian”. Oppo has been one of the most interesting figures on the international scene during the last few decades. After his studies in Rome, Venice and Poland in the early 1960s, he remained, by his own choice, in his home territory, sharing his “Sardinian-ness” in a free and dialectic manner with the avant-garde. After formulating his own particular aleatory approach, Oppo reached a turning point halfway through the 1970s: in Musica per chitarra e quartetto d’archi, Praxodia and, finally, in Anninnia I, the meeting point between avant-garde research and the special phonic quality of tra ditional music became more and more close-knit and organic, at the same time also acting on the founding language structure whilst still remaining under the control of incisive and informed dis ciplines (during the same period, moreover, he put forward new methodologies of analysis which were also necessary for his teaching). In this sense the most important works are chamber pieces like Anninnia I and II (1978, 1982), Attitidu (1983) and Sagra (1985), the theatrical work Eleonora d’Arborea (1986), some piano “transcriptions” - the Three berceuses (1982), Gallurese and Baroniese (1989; 1993) - Trio III (1994), Sonata B for percussion and piano (2005) and the two Concerts for piano and orchestra (1995-97; 2002).

  • FORGOTTEN ARTISTS an Occasional Series by Christopher Howell 22. CARLO VIDUSSO (1911-1978)
FORGOTTEN ARTISTS An occasional series by Christopher Howell 22. CARLO VIDUSSO (1911-1978) 1. Introductory It is just as well this article won’t be making its first appearance on April 1st. Carlo Vidusso was a pianist, but he was also a man of numbers. He left nothing numerical to chance. Fingering first and foremost. In his scores, he fingered every single note, even the individual notes in trills. Only for a long tremolo, would he relent and put a sign indicating that the same fingers were to continue. Vidusso wrote his fingering with a thick ball- point pen, in figures as large as the space in the score would allow. Not content with numbering the fingers 1 to 5 like everybody else, he added 6 for the thumb and third finger together, 7 for the ring and little fingers together and 8 for the thumb across two keys. He expected his pupils to do likewise and would infallibly detect any deviation (1). Not content with this, he counted the number of notes in each line of music and summed them up, so he could tell you how many notes there are in Das Wohltemperierte Klavier – with and without the ornaments, which he wrote out in his own manuscript copy – and how many there are in the Chopin Etudes. His system of memorization was number-based. The music was to be memorized from the score before taking it to the piano – not a unique system and very good if you have the time to do it. The Vidusso variant, though, was to learn, say, the entire Bach 48 or the entire Clementi “Gradus ad Parnassum” by learning the first lines of every piece, then the second lines of every piece, putting it all together at the end.
